Fake Proms for Lesbians and Special Ed

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/04/06/national/main6367855.shtml

“They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them,” McMillen told The Advocate, a national gay-and-lesbian publication. “The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to.”

Last month, the Itawamba County School District refused to allow McMillen to bring a female date to her high school prom and then canceled the event. She went to federal court, and a judge ruled the district had violated her civil rights. But he did not order the district to hold the prom, because a parent-sponsored event was being scheduled away from the school. McMillen said organizers would not give her details, finally telling her to go to the country club Friday night.

My district had a Gay,Lesbian, Trans prom. There was no issue, what is your angle here?

Good for them…seriously. Otherwise, who cares?

Personally, I think that when you start having separate events/facilities etc. for groups that don’t consider themselves “mainstream” or whatever, you further alienate them from the rest of society.

It is not unlike Brown vs. Board of education (separate but equal school for blacks & whites is inherently unequal). The more these people are separated from eachother, the worse things get. In order to have true equality, there can be no separation of groups, whether it be race, religion, sex, whatever.

I understand that people might want to be with people they can identify with (for instance, exclusively African American TV/magazines etc.), but at the same time this further separates them from everyone else.

Until we can have a true homogeneous society society, we will continue having conflicts among one another because of our differences. Separating people only makes things worse.

The Harpoons, Man Them?

On a more serious note, this is a great argument for the privatization of schools. Everybody pays for their own schooling, you don’t like the schooling you get, you go to a competitor. Problem solved.

are people missing the point etc… or did yall not read the link?

A public school said this girl couldn’t bring who she wanted to the prom… then they held another prom and lied to her sending her to a fake prom when everyone else was at another one… they also sent two kids with disabilities to the fake prom.

Segregation at its finest… this shouldn’t be tolerated.

I read it here, says basically the same stuff but imo explains it better

Not to mention the giant slap in the face that must’ve been to the girl. I mean EVERYONE knew about the real prom except her. Does she have no friends? How did a conspiracy of that magnitude really take place so smoothly. The teachers, the faculty, the parents, the peers all knew! Everyone knew except her! That’s amazing in itself.

From everything I’ve read the country club event was the school based prom. The school had nothing to do with the planning of the secret prom. The students simply did not choose to attend the school function and instead decided to hold their own party. So essentially Constance got to attend the prom she sued for. She didn’t exactly sue to force the other students to show up.

There are also plenty of details missing in all of this. Is Constance the only homosexual in that school? Some of the quotes I’ve read from the other students would claim that she’s doing this merely for the attention. Course it’s all backstroking at this point because of the media coverage. If other homosexual students attended the secret prom, it sort of pokes holes in her poor me claim doesn’t it?

Didn’t all this stem from her wanting to wear a tux? Curious as to what the school would have done had her and her GF simply both wore prom dresses and came together. Course it is Mississippi, so probably the same actions would have taken place. I think ultimately however the school board is the culprit in all of this, with a little rabble-rousing from Constance for good measure, and of course the all important media coverage.

I have been following this for a while now and there is SO much more to this story.

I have a few gay and lesbian friend and we have talked about this in length. This has nothing to do with G&L rights, this is just a girl who wants to be in the spot light and will do w/e it takes. The parents that were organizing the pron after the school sponsored one was canceled told her that she had to get her tickets at a certain place and the deadline. So what does she do? Waits till after the dead line and says “Oh, they wouldn’t sell me tickets.”

Fuck this girl, I dont feel sry for her one bit. How the fuck did the school boad even know she was going to bring her GF and wear a tux? And so what if they say no, there are ways around that. Now I have no problem if she wanted to bring her GF but there is a dress code and I know my HS wouldn’t have let a guy wear a dress or a girl wear a tux.

The only ppl who suffered in this were her class mates, the seniors most of all, b/c they had no clue if they were going to have a prom or not.

Fuck her.

He has the idea, only here we call it " Buffalo Hunting". This proud tradition occurs any given night around 2-3 where we unfortunately couldn’t find an attractive girl, we would sharpen our spears and go Buffalo hunting. " OOOOOAOAAAAARRRRRR" is usually what we hear after the spear has pierced the skin of the Buffalo, and the hunt is complete.

You don’t have a clue. The girl petitioned to bring a same-sex partner to the prom and was denied. She contacted the ACLU. The school cancelled the prom after the ACLU threatened a lawsuit. The parents then set up their own prom event, which she was not invited to (and neither were the special ed kids).

It’s an absolute disgrace, and you should be ashamed of yourself for supporting this type of behaviour.

Ya. Ughhh, No. Just b/c someone tells her no, its a violation of her civle rights? I want to take my dog to the gym with me but they told me no. Thats discrimination. I think I’ll sue and contact PETA. It is also the right of a buisness or private organization to refuse service, which from what you say the parents did(which breaks down into he said she said). Just as its with in a Schools rights to suspend a student or expell a student from the school, social events or extracurricular activites such as athletics who is disruptive or other wises warents such action.

But as I said there are ways around the school board telling her no she can’t bring her GF. And I would bet that the vast majority of public schools in this country wouldn’t let her were a tux.

Again I have no problem with the fact that she wants to bring her GF and wear a Tux. WTFE. But b/c your told no you feel the need to fuck up prom for the whole student bady, call in the ACLU and for what? To see how much press you can get and some cash.

disgrace? w/e I still say fuck her.

I don’t know. Why exactly did she make a petition? Why not buy tickets and show up with whomever you wanted? Was the school checking who students were going with? That makes no sense unless she just wanted attention and wanted to shove her sexuality down everyone’s throat. If that is true, the school was just in telling her no. Sounds like she was more interested in an endorsement than attending an event.

Second, if the parents put on the second prom, they can invite, not invite whomever they want. Though, if what himora said was true, she was just as invited as everyone else.

yes. yes it is. they’re discriminating against her based on her sexual orientation.

except that this is a public school, not a business or private organization.

now i’m not going to weigh in on whether this girl is an attention-whore or not as this is the first i’ve heard of this. i’m also not going to comment on the parent-run prom as, technically, that’s not a school function. what i am appalled by is the school district denying her the right to bring a same-sex prom date in the first place. that is wrong.

How about if everyone else at the gym was allowed to take their dog with them, but you weren’t because you’re gay?
