Fairness to Bush: Hurricane Gustav

Donc…avez-vous plus de questions?

Would those be better? [/quote]

Like lixy said, those are correct. The 2nd sounds better, although I’m inclined to think that most francophones would use “d’autres” instead of “plus de”… it sounds better.

“Y aura-t-il d’autres questions?” is probably what you want here.

The simple “D’autres questions?” would also be good, as would “Des questions?” but at that point, you’re getting very close to the simple “Questions?” which is, ta-dah, good in both French and English.

Anyway, back to Gustav…

Thanks for correcting my French! I really got take a semester or two in Paris to get it up to snuff. I’ll buy a book or two in French, maybe that’ll help.

Now let me borrow from Chris Rock a bit:

You aren’t supposed to be congratulated for shit you’re supposed to do. “I don’t beat my kids!” Good for you, you want a cookie!?!?

Seriously. This is the way it was SUPPOSED to happen. You don’t get praise when you feed your kids or when you choose to wear a condom if you know you have an STD. Its just what you’re SUPPOSED to do.

Maybe he’ll get some more fishing in.

I knocked three of my teeth out looking for terrorist-plaque. Where’s my medal?

First of all, we haven’t won yet. The country is apparently like night and day compared to two years ago, but that is mostly due to the Anbar Awakening, not the “surge.” 30,000 extra troops were not and could not be decisive in a war like that. I’m sure it helped, especially in Baghdad, but it was not what turned it around.

Things still very much have the potential to go south. No one has been following the news about the SOI, especially in Diyala?

And all that aside, international reputation aside, four thousand dead Americans aside, tens of thousands of dead Iraqis aside - the war cost $3 TRILLION. And that’s the conservative estimate.

The awakening would not have happened had there been no surge.

If you follow this sort of things, Al-Qaeda shifted focus to its activities in the Maghreb. More importantly, they realized that their PR was going to shit because of their systematic targeting of innocents. Now, they’d rather blow up caserns in Algeria or French-speaking foreign troops in Afghanistan. Was this strategic shift a response to the so-called surge? I don’t really know. But it is hard to believe that twenty eight thousand American troops could deter acts of terrorism, particularly not those of suicide bombers.

Then, there is the fact that the Iraqi economy kicked off. Money in the treasury means less joblessness and despair. The situation had reached rock bottom and is now naturally bouncing back.

Let’s not forget Al-Sadr’s decision to muzzle his militia. His organization is now focusing on charity work and social aspects rather than street shootings. Ultimately, this is only making him stronger should he decide to cut himself a piece of the political scene in the near future. And barring an American attack on Iran, he will most likely do so.

The so-called troop surge should probably get credit for Jaysh Al-Mahdi suspending its military activity. Buying up and arming local tribesmen to stop shooting at Americans was smart too. The question is whether this is sustainable or not? I personally don’t have get the impression that it is, or that Washington has a strategy beyond see what happens.

If you are criticized for doing a bad job, then it would be sensible to be at least somewhat lauded for doing a good job. And equating being responsible for the lives of others with something mundane, like brushing your teeth, is maudlin.

The Gustav disaster was averted because of the new Governor of Louisiana, Bobby Jindal.

I’m sorry, but where does this happen in society at all? I treated at least 12 patients yesterday and none of them died. Any “lauding”? Of course not. I did my job the way it was supposed to be done and better.

What do you think would happen if something negative did happen? Do you think they would care about all of the patients before that I treated without a problem?

Do some of you live in the same reality as the rest of us?

This hurricane was a tropical storm by the time the “eye” was over the mainland. Why is ANYONE comparing this to the massive fuck up that was Katrina?

I thank my doctor every time I see him whether it’s for a physical, or him actually treating me for something. I thank my dentist even if it is nothing more than a teeth cleaning. I even thank my orthodontist every excruciatingly painful visit.

So, I guess it happens in my little circle of life. I can’t speak for anyone else.

How many people live in your “reality”? Sounds to me like you might want to see a professional about this. The voices in your head are now real people.

Are you being serious with this question? Seriously? It was a very strong Cat 2 (wind speeds 1 mph below Cat 3) when it hit land. Maybe it is compared to Katrina because it hit within 100 miles of where Katrina did. Why are there people out there so clueless as to not understand how similar this was to Katrina right up until the end?

Word at the local level was that Jindal pushed for the replacement of the Terrebonne parish president. The rumor resulted in this story…

I’m sure Jindal had his eyes on Nagin as well.

Kind of a tad different than the massive media coverage if one of them were to accidentally kill a patient. I get a “thank you” as well from my patients because I am interacting with them in a personal level. That “personal one on one” contact would suddenly involve many more people (from lawyers to media) if there was a negative occurrence, none of which are there to say, “thank you” when all goes right.

Katrina was not a Cat 2 and did not downgrade to a tropical storm the way Gustave did. They are nothing alike other than being hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast.

What in the fuck are you even saying? You asked a question. I answered it. I thank my lawyer as well - and at $300/hour I even buy his lunch.

You look at yourself and wonder how anyone could possibly think differently than you do. You don’t need to rationalize it to me, or anyone else. It is what it is.

Really? Did you know this for a fact 3 days prior? 2 days prior? If you did, you are in the wrong fucking business. You could make bank just following the hurricane season selling your talents to the highest bidder.

The fact is, from Bush all the way down to Nagin, they assumed the worst. They had to as the reports were all predicting a Cat 4 or higher when the evacuation orders were given.

If you will actually read what I said - I said it was very similar to Katrina right up to the end. Denying that is just beyond irrational.

I meant exactly what I fucking wrote. It doesn’t matter if you personally thank someone who treated you, that is nothing like the MASSIVE PUBLIC REAMING the individual would get if they fucked up. Are you able to comprehend this at all or are you just typing to see how many profanities you can link together?

Wow. Someone has to explain to you that the damage done by the fucking hurricane is the primary reason why there was such a large disaster for Katrina and not just the evacuation process?

That is right, Bobby Jindal was the one who stepped up and did what he was suppose to do. I was in NOLA when Katrina hit and I blame Blanco for not doing her job as Gov. It got to be a pissing contest between her, Nagin and Bush, that is why it was such a cluster fuck. All three are to blame if you ask me.
I was in my hometown in Louisiana last weekend watching LPB and was very impressed with Jindal.

I feel the exact same way. However, you need to add “Brownie” to that list of clusterfuckers.
