My thoughts are, once again, the people writing these things don’t understand how “free speech” works.
The people writing the community notes? You’re probably right.
I’m not sure what a community note is to be honest, but I’m speaking more to the blurb that was quoted.
Free speech is an awesome right. It’s not being compromised by social media censorship.
I left FB/insta mid-covid when censorship was bad. they can go fuck themselves, I have 0 desires to come back. FB feels outdated tbh. full of soft-porn
It becomes a free speech issue when the government is “suggesting” what should and shouldn’t be allowed, which Zuckerberg himself has admitted to. No surprise the bias leaned Left.
I feel, on this subject, we will have to agree to disagree.
I’ve been done with Facebook for a long time.
Their censorship was straight up bias editing.
Couldn’t tell you how many times I was put in Facebook “jail” for what I would consider an innocuous comment that green haired people went nuts about and reported because it simply didn’t agree with their narrative.
Then, during the Chinese weather balloon fiasco, I posted a meme on my own feed about “real spy balloons” and it was the viral at-the-time pic of Hunter Biden in underwear and a red scarf but edited with him holding party balloons and floating over Montana.
I was told that based on that meme, I was a suspected Russian spy and would need to upload two forms of US government photo ID, one of which needed to be a current passport, or my account would be deleted in 30 days.
Not going to rejoin but very curious to see how they address censorship from there, lol
I don’t understand why most people don’t just do this. If you don’t like it, leave and stop using their product. People will complain about social media but continue to spend hours every day across various platforms.
Am I misunderstanding you? I agree, it’s an awesome right. But do you believe it wasn’t censored on social media?
Good point, though I haven’t seen too many people stay on it while complaining about it. There are just too many alternatives. Seems like most people who socialize here don’t use Facebook much or have an account. I deactivated mine a few years ago and haven’t missed it.
I believe Pwn has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science, so he will no doubt have his own educated reasons for whatever he thinks, and I’m not in any way trying to speak for him, buuut my (unasked for!) thoughts have always been if you agree to use someone’s product (so Facebook), they can set whatever rules they want. If you don’t like it, stop using it.
I guess my experience has been different. I’m sure we’re each only seeing a minuscule fraction of the hundreds of millions of users, so there’s probably a wide spectrum.
That is wild! I didn’t realize it had gotten that bad.
Haha yeah that’s for sure.
I believe speech was censored: I don’t believe free speech wasn’t protected (hate to use a double negative there, but it’s the best way to communicate my thoughts).
If that’s true, why is Zuckerberg admitting that censorship on Facebook had gotten out of hand?
I must be a dummy because I still don’t know what this means.
But Zuckerberg himself is fixing what he believed was a problem. If free speech was protected on his platform then why was there a need to fix anything?
I legit think a team of moderators or however Facebook does things beyond the initial AI scan just didn’t like my hot takes as a whole. Pro Trump, pro 2a, anti sexually mutilating children et cetera.
They used what “power” they had to mute a straight white guy and probably felt like they were changing the world that day.
I have no idea. I have a Facebook account so I can use Messenger to communicate with a few people. I’ve never used it to post, like, comment, or otherwise interact with people/pages so I really have no idea what it’s actually like.
My guess is that Zuckerberg is not sitting on a computer doing the censoring himself, so maybe he was not completely aware of the extent to which things had gone.
My second guess, which I feel is more accurate, although I don’t actually know, is that he senses the tide is changing and doesn’t want to risk damage to his reputation or business, so he’s getting on board with the newest swing of the pendulum.
