I am in need of some serious help. Every since I was 11 I have been lifting weights and been in to eating clean. Well the reason I was always lifting and not playing sports is because I have no athletic ability what so ever. I’m 18 now and really want to improve upon this. Do you think jump roping might help out my coordination? Or am I just screwed? i went to go play volleyball with my buddies and I figured out that I suck at the whole hitting the ball thing. The sad part is I am like this at every sport. Any advice?
First, you’re not screwed. I’ve known total klutzes, you’d wonder how they lived through one day, improve. (The klutz major’d in classical dance in college, and at the end of college could dance like a pro! This, from a guy who I asked to stick out his left hand 3 times and he stuck out both hands and a foot).
Find a structured learning environment where body awareness is taught (martial arts are good for this. Judo and Tai Chi especially). You may initially be disappointed that you don’t progress as quickly as the other students, but stick with it and you will improve.
I went to school with a klutz named Skyler that could not do anything. He, to my knowledge, never to manage to hit the ball once in Little League. He kept trying though. He ended up being a Phy Ed instructor. Just keep at it mike.
Ok well I would say you are talking about a learned behavior. You are 18 you are just getting used to your body. It is not surprising you are a clod. Did you have a growth spurt??? I didn’t grow until I was in College then I went from 5’7-6 ft in one year I was a clutz that year. It is definitely a use it or lose it. I did all sports when I was young and was incredibly active I feel out of that for about 10 years and am now getting back into it I am a clod again. However it comes back quickly. Ok so what I am saying is try all different things martial arts is a good idea but there are millions of little ways too. Pay attention to body position even when you are just walking along. You will be amazed at how much even the tiniest thing can help. I am not denying that inate ability is not helpful but it is also not everything.
like in anyn sport, you need to practice. even the best always practice. laters pk
