I believe Orion was making a joke, and it was a good one. The ambulance will not take you my office, they will take you to a hospital or some such place to have your wounds treated. If you come to my office, which is located in the physics department of a major university, thinking that I can treat your medical conditions, then the fact that I am a PhD and not an MD is the least fucked up thing in that scenario. It is not my duty to explain to everyone who doesn’t know the difference between a Medical Doctor and a doctor what I do.
Go to google. Type in “doctor”. Look at the results, look at the images.
When you tell somebody you are a doctor and fail to clarify that you are actually a physicist, normal people assume you are a medical doctor. Period.

I don’t care what “normal people” assume when they hear the title doctor. If you or anyone else doesn’t know the difference between a doctor and a medical practitioner, that is your business, but I have never, not once, had someone assume I was a medical doctor. When I introduce myself, most people ask what kind of doctor I am.

So should he cater to people’s ignorance, or should people learn what a doctor actually is? When you tell people you go to the gym, wouldn’t you feel annoyed if they immediately thought you were on steroids? All people with a decent amount of muscle should wear T-shirts saying they are not on steroids as a disclaimer.

You introduce yourself as “Dr.”? I don’t care what kind of doc, it’s the pretentiousness of that, that irks me. Not assuming, just mentioning that should that be the case…it’s funny.

When meeting someone at something like a formal dinner or other type of similar situation, which I do quite often, it is appropriate and expected to introduce oneself by title and last name. My title is doctor, so I introduce myself, or am introduced as Dr. Whatever My Last Name Is.

I guess. My wife (who has both a PHD and an MD) and is a surgeon introduces herself as “Sarah.”

When just meeting someone informally, yes, I just introduce myself by my first name, and then say that they can call me Matt since most people have trouble pronouncing my real name. In any kind of formal setting and at work, I am Dr. Whatever. Unfortunately, most of my interactions these days are some kind of formal occasion.

If I went through all of that time, effort and money to get my doctorate, I’d be telling everyone that Im Dr.motherfuckingHungry every chance I got.
Seriously, both PX and DrMatt have every right to call themselves doctors and shouldn’t have to justify the reasons, either.
My 2cents.
And this is the root of the issue.
When a certain poster implies his PHd is an MD to win an argument, we have an issue. The rest is neither here nor there.
Also, to each their own, bit in my own personal opinion and regardless of tax brackets, a princess mentality should be avoided. But then bitches are basically fuck toys anyways.

Thank you, I am glad someone gets it. A doctor is defined in that google search that was suggested as “someone who has obtained a doctoral degree,” and a physician is just one of the doctoral degrees one can obtain. And I would call you Dr.motherfuckingHungry, and not just because you would be most awesomely named doctor in the world.
No one doubts it’s hard work. But if someone introduced themselves as “imhungry, esq”. Wouldn’t you want to punch them in the nuts. Or if richard branson said “i’m sir branson”. Dick punch again no?

I know who you are talking about, but that doesn’t change the fact that people have told ME (and I have never pretended to be an MD) that I should clarify that I am not an MD because someone might come to my office and expect medical care. I don’t know about you, but when I need medical care I go to a hospital or to some other type of medical facility. I don’t go to the physics department of a university.

What if the medical issue involved losing a leg through a time-space continuum?
I have no issues with what you’re saying. I just feel proclamation of accomplishment on a daily basis narcissistic. I do it myself. I guess you hate in others what you see in yourself.

I think Matt is primarily talking about conferences and the like where like any other professional gathering there are certain expectations. If he were to attend one of these functions he likely wouldn’t be on a first name basis with the majority of people attending the function and by introducing himself as Doctor he is immediately informing people that he is a primary investigator or at least post doc and not a grad student.

LOL. Exactly. I predict a major refeed at the reception.

Not from a blaise point of belittlement, if a doctorate would benefit me in my field financially I’d get one, this falls under “neither here nor there” in my comment.
I understand your frustration but its not my fight. I also think you got lumped into an argument mentioned above without any situational discernment made for fear of concession.
That said, while I don’t care who knows, I don’t introduce myself as HoustonGuy, Successful Entrepreneur and expect people to recognize my hard work just because I’ve done it.

I’m not talking about Matt, I don’t know him for boo. I just mean I’ve met people introduce themselves as doctor so and so, primarily MD’s and it’s just so effing annoying. Like people who have it on their cc’s and stuff.
