Explosive Movement Transfer to Takedowns?

I watch an MMA bout where it’s grappling heavy and I see the guys try to lock up. Then one guy hits another in the face and I think “-2 points and a warning”. Or I start counting back points out of habbit…

Wrong sport dummy.

I see them lock up and I’m like “No. Drop your hips. Drop. DROP! NOT TIPPY TOES!

Then the wife says “you’re yelling at the internet again.” and I’m like “but hun, you gotta see this…”.

I appreciate the compliment, and I am proud of it, I just have no illusions that “winning a sectional wrestling title” means anything in a street fight haha. I’m sure my wrestling background would serve me well against an untrained fighter, but if it came to blows between me and a street tough that’s been in a real fight, put your money on the other guy, lol.

Random note: one of the matches that I’m proudest of (in retrospect) was a 9-6 loss to the eventual state champ. I wasn’t the most talented guy but I could make even the best ones sweat.

My brother in law was quite good and does some local mma matches. He doesn’t have any striking skills and gets beat up pretty badly, but he has fun with it and gets a nice little payday.

I wasnt the greatest wrestler but the mental toughness carry over is HUGE believe it or not. I boxed for a while and may again. Again wasn’t real good but I could trade punches with the best of them. Plus been in a few fights back in my school days and a couple bar fights since and being able to lock up and throw an untrained dude is a huge advantage.

Yoo thanks for input everyone, this thread has gotten some legit info so far and im much appreciative. Im a month out from my fight now. Training has been getting pretty tough since camp started and im in a pretty heavy deficit. I haven’t gotten much into the Olympic lifts so far this camp because I tore my labrum in my right shoulder in my last fight, and even front squats are not possible at this point in time, although I am working on pt and mobility so I can start again, I know there is a lot of benefit. I have just been shooting a lot, and doing sled drives, and anaerobic threshold lifting for time, which seems to be helping with the grind. I feel like my grind is getting better but the speed/explosiveness could still use a lot of improvement if that makes any sense. Im going to start incorporating those pop ups from louie and the plyos that Jordan burroughs was doing that @bagofbro suggested. Again thanks for the input guys, I gotta get more active on this, this is my first post so im not super experienced with the format etc. Much more helpful and respectful than any other forum I have been on, which is again much appreciated.

I’m not going to suggest that you overhaul things a month out from a fight, but I will make one more plug that when you are past the fight and considering how to train for future bouts, rather than worrying about the Olympic lifts, go with sandbag lifting instead. Lifting and shouldering a 100-150-200 pound sandbag will be less technical than Oly lifts, will have a little more direct carryover to grappling (a partially-filled sandbag is an awkward object that doesn’t really want to move the way you want it to move, because the sand shifts around), and still probably will get you that “speed/explosiveness” that you are seeking.

Anyways, good luck in your fight!
