Experiences with Finasteride

I’m a 25 year old male. I’m not a perfect specimen, but I think I’m fairly healthy. I never drink or smoke, I’m not on any medications, I’ve never struggled with depression/anxiety, and while I don’t know what my T levels are, everything (as in, downstairs as well as the rest of my body) seems to work perfectly fine.

Over the past year, I feel like the top of my head seems to be thinning a bit. And to be completely honest, I’m not sure if it’s getting thinner or if it’s the same as it’s always been, and I just didn’t start paying attention to it until recently. It’s not enough to be noticeable to anyone but me, but to be quite frank, I just don’t want it to get worse. My hair almost reaches my waist, and is a big part of my identity and culture. Do I need it? No, but it is important to me. I’m fine with losing my hair someday, I’d just like to maybe wait another decade or two if possible, haha.

I brought the issue up in a recent appointment with a dermatologist, and he offered a daily 1mg prescription of finasteride. He acknowledged that it could affect hormones, which if side effects were noticed, would likely be lower libido, possible ED, etc. He said for the vast majority of people, those go away once you stop taking the drug.

I went and looked online, and everything seems to say that most people will not experience negative side effects, at least to a large extent, and of those that do, most can simply stop taking the drug if they feel it is no longer worth it. There were plenty of people who said finasteride essentially ruined their lives, but I do imagine that, like with most drugs, the majority who have a fine experience have nothing to report about it, while we only hear from the horror stories. I also saw someone say that in most bad cases, the person had a history of mental health issues, problems with drugs, and were sometimes using AAS and likely weren’t doing so in a very smart way. Past threads here on T-Nation that mention finasteride are pretty much all in the Pharma/TRT forum, and many of the posters seemed like they were using a variety of medications.

I’m asking if any current posters have ever used the drug and what their experiences have been. Mods, I’m putting it in Off-Topic because I think only a certain crowd posts in Pharma/TRT, and I’m looking for feedback from regular guys not using multiple drugs at once. @Chris_Shugart - I know you’re rocking the bald head (I think…on second thought I only see pictures of you with a hat on, haha), but you seem like you spend a lot of time reading research articles and whatnot. @Andrewgen_Receptors - never seen you mention anything like this, but you also seem to do your research and familiar with a variety of drugs/supplements.

TL;DR 25 year old male in decent health and on no medications considering pros and cons of daily 1mg of finasteride from other users.

My personal experience with hair loss might be of interest to you. My hairline retreated a bit in my early 20’s and I assumed I was doomed. Waking up with hair on my pillow at age 20 didn’t give me much hope.

It stopped and has held steady for about 20 years, although it is slowly thinning on top. Grey and white hairs galore, though.

The only factor I can think of was that I worked midnights when it started retreating and it seemed to hold steady as soon as I began normal hours.

I’ve decided to embrace whatever comes, but I’m happy I didn’t mess with any hormones. I actually purchased rogaine around age 23, decided it seemed like a big pain, and left it in the drawer until I eventually tossed it a few years later.

Thanks for the input. That’s definitely a possibility I considered - my hair might not be actively thinning, but just is thinner and will stay that way. Who knows.

I have zero problem with the idea of going grey.

This is the decision to make. I feel sort of silly considering it - of course I’d rather have healthy hormones than a head of hair, but still… the majority seem to do just fine with it. I even have an uncle who’s taken finasteride for 20+ years and never noticed any side effects. Just wanted to hear from some other dudes.

Finasteride is going to reduce the amount of DHT in your body.
DHT is primarily responsible for hair loss, but also most other testosterone-related attributes. It’s your body’s primary derivative of testosterone.

It’s not a question of “if” itll happen, its a question of “how much”.

Oral form finasteride will reduce your body’s DHT at a systemic level. You may feel effects from this if your test levels are already low or close enough for finasteride to drop your levels under the symptom threshold.
You may also not feel any symptoms at all.

There is also topical finasteride so you can apply it where you want to block the DHT, but it may be a bit less effective than oral form. This is what I’m using currently… cant tell if it’s working or not, but I’m running 2 compounds that are very unfriendly to hair so :man_shrugging:

If there was a pill I could have taken at the time I probably would have. Rogaine was a whole routine I decided wasn’t worth it.

My brother has used a variety of treatments and is way ahead of me on the balding. He’s also married to his woke activist wife, whereas I am not. My family is all over the place with hair loss and I got lucky compared to most.

Greys and whites are awesome and I hope you get a lot. Now that I know about this pill I’m actually considering it now too. I like my widows peak I got at age 21.

I used it briefly a long time ago, but (as I recall) the potential side effects didn’t outweigh the minor help it seemed to give with hair loss. I didn’t take it long enough to experience side effects, for the record. Honestly, this was in my 20s and I was probably just panicking and not actually thinning yet. When the real thinning began (40s), I just opted to shave it. I think after a certain point, no drug helps much.

Thanks for the thorough answer. And for:

I just remember seeing topical stuff for minoxidil, didn’t know about topical finasteride. A quick look says it’s generally considered to have less side effects. I’ll ask the doctor about it.

This might be me, haha.

But thanks for the answer! I’ll be tagging you again sometime when I get around to collecting my thoughts on another question I’ve been looking into.
