Excess DHEA Supplementation

So I am a 27 year old male and started supplementing DHEA 25 mg/day for about 3 months. I did this to help with adrenal fatigue and libido. After about a week I noticed a very large increase in libido. I mean like as in sex with my girlfriend for three hours straight and being able to orgasm myself multiple times. It was incredible and it helped with my energy as well. Well being stupid I kept supplementing without a break and eventually it killed my libido after 3 months.

So I stopped supplementing just under a month ago and had my doctor run some blood tests. My testosterone was at the very upper range of normal at about 914 ng/dl with the upper range being about 1096 ng/dl. So that wasn’t the cause of the decreased libido. We also tested my DHEA levels and they came back double what they should be. Oops. So I definitely over supplemented.

So with that said how long does it take the body to return DHEA levels back to normal and what does excess DHEA become in males? Does it become estrogen? I am thinking that it caused an increase in estrogen that would be causing the sexual problems.I am trying to find good info online but cant find much so hoping you guys can help shed some light on this situation. My ND suggested a liver detox to help clear the DHEA but all the liver detox teas have licorice (only about 100mg) and I dont want any excess estrogen. Not sure if 100mg is enough to increase estrogen.

I also was wondering about estrogen blockers and aromatase inhibitors. I have a Chrysin, Nettle root, and DIM combo supplement called AE-3 that I was thinking of trying but I am afraid to play with my hormones any more. I was supplementing 50 mg/ Zinc Glycinate. It gives me a libido boost for a day or so but then I get bad anxiety from it. So what are your guys’ thoughts on the aromatase inhibitors/ estrogen blockers.

Sorry for the long post but any advice is more than appreciated.

when your doctor checked your test, did he not also check your E?

No she didnt check my E. I was thinking about that thought and will ask her to have that tested as well so I dont have to guess. I have many of the symptoms of high E though so thats why Im going out on a limb and saying my E is elevated. If my DHEA is double the normal amount and my Testosterone is almost too high then I am going to say that my estrogen is high as well.

the problem with hormones is they’re not always so easy to predict, and fucking with one tends to fuck with all the others.

Get a FULL hormone panel before you start throwing shit at it trying to fix a problem you don’t know you even definitely have.

I called my doc twice and am waiting for her to get back to me so I can ask her about it. I will definitely get a full hormone panel then before I start messing with stuff. That was my problem in the first place I just blindly took DHEA which worked for a few months and then too much. I am just anxious to get things back into balance and have the crazy sex life that me and my girl had a few months ago.

What about the DHEA conversion. How does that pathway work in men? And how long does it take the body to balance excess DHEA (in my case twice the normal amount) and will licorice root at about 100mg negatively affect testosterone?

see, this is exactly the situation that you don’t want to find yourself in.

Now you’re thinking about adding in something else to counter issues you may or not have. What if that causes more problems? You going to self medicate with something else? Where will it end?

Just wait until you’ve seen the doctor before you do ANYTHING

calcium d glucarate couldn’t hurt

I was looking at calcium d glucarate but I will definitely wait till I talk to my doctor before adding anything. I always get anxious and try to experiment with stuff when I shouldnt be. Thanks for the advice and talking some sense into me.

happy to help brother, I’ve gotten a bit cavalier with the hormone manipulation in the past and when it goes wrong it’s a nightmare, so I feel your pain.

It’ll get better though, don’t worry. Best of luck to you.
