Ever Met a Famous Bodybuilder?

My gym holds a BBing contest every two years and they get some good BBers to pose for the fans.

Ive met Gustavo Badell and he is a real nice guy! Some man to eat! We all went out on the town after the show and got pissed!

Dennis wolf came to another one. He was also a very nice guy, quite and very mannerly. His missus (his manager) wears the pants though’ he even said that if she told him to quit BB tomorrow he would, true love eh! Plus he smokes, which I thought was a bit unusual, but hey!

Troy Alves and Zack Khan were here a month ago. Troy Avles is a real gent, answered everyones questions in the gym the day after. I didnt get to meet Zack.

When I used to train at Bevs I saw Dorian, Flex Wheeler and Cormier.

Not all at the same time, at different times. Mostly just hanging out talking to Steve or Bev. Didn’t speak to any of them. Dudes were fucking immense in person…

I lifted in the power rack next to Jay Cutler in Vegas once. He was finishing up his routine and I was just getting started. That’s all I got. Sorry.[/quote]

Damn, dude, I expected WAY more from you…

Something epic like involving you, Jamie Eason, a snowmobile, and a ham.

Lol…dude, that’s awesome. : )

I trained with Stan Efferding for a couple of months.

I’ve met melvin anthony, dexter jackson, lee priest, luke wood, roelly winklaar, kai greene, grigori atoyan, rusty jeffers, michael kefialanos

dexter jackson is a cool ass dude in real life and melvin anthony is the funniest guy I’ve ever spoken too. Met all these guys at the australian grand prix this year.

Just an interesting vid along these lines, taken by some guys in 99 who met Levrone and videod it - Levrone seems pretty cool, even shows off a little and has some fun

Yeah. He is. Very laid back and down to Earth and never really takes himself too seriously. Very approachable and never really bought into his own press.

Back in '78 I attended one of George Snyder’s “Best In The World” shows. In the lobby all the guys were selling their stuff and signing autographs. Frank Zane is bigger in real life than he looks in photos. Mike Mentzer had the biggest calves I’d ever seen. Sammir Bannout was competing and won that night and was flawless. Robby Robinson guest posed and had the best V-taper and bicep peak I’d ever seen!

I got autographs from all of them(including Steve Michalik, Boyer Coe, Cave Draper, Greg DeFerro and more). When I got an autograph from Ed Corney, he asked for $2.00! I said “For an autograph? Nobody else here is charging money for autographs!” He angrily shot back, “Yeah, well I gotta make a living.” Dick.

Anyway, days before the show, I made an oil painting of Arnold. He was going to be emcee that night and would be hard to get an autograph from. I imagined I’d trade the painting for an autograph if I could somehow get to Arnold (such grand schemes for the fifteen year old newb that I was).

Toward the end of the show, I made my way to the foot of the stage… painting in one hand, program book and pen in the other. Arnold was just finishing up an announcement and started to head backstage when I called out his name. He turned around, looked down from the stage at me holding the painting up for him to see, and came to the edge of the stage. I was exhilarated!

I told him he could have the painting I made for him if he just signs my program book. He misunderstood me and took the painting and the pen and proceeded to sign the painting! I tried to explain again what I wanted, but someone backstage was calling him away. He looked at me and said, “I’ll be back”, then disappeared behind the curtains. I waited for a few minutes, but then an usher angrily told me to return to my seat (almost halfway back in the theater).

Back in my seat, I was bummed out that it didn’t go as planned, but the friends I came to the show with were ecstatic! I got to see the KING up close, and he signed my painting! Back home my dad was impressed. At school nobody could care less except for the handful of kids “in the know”.

My mom still has that painting at her house (the ink has faded a bit, but it’s still Arnold’s recognizable handwriting). She was wondering how much it would sell for on E-bay. lol

Flex Lewis trained at my gym until a few months ago. Him and the gaspari guys are supposed to be opening their own gym (that I need to go check out).

He was a reasonably nice guy and would chat and such. He was an ass when he was on a contest prep though.

Here’s a pic of Dennis Wolf at the show 2 years ago.

Waterford Weight Training Club. Its been going since 1955. Its a non-commercial gym with no advertising, just word of mouth, where someone has to ‘vouch’ for you in order to get in. Cool place!

You’re very lucky to have met these BBers, as these are the characters who stand out to me when I think Bodybuilding! Whats cool is they still inspire people today and thats just class! I would have loved to have seen/met those guys in person like Mentzer and Zane but esp. Arnold!

I’m sure when Arnold hit the big-time in the early 80’s with movies like Conan and the Terminator, that signed oil painting of yours took on a whole new meaning to those who were not in the know.

Cool story!

Great story ID!

I’ve met most of the big names in the German scene and have had my share of conversations with our Olympia competitors of the last few years (except for Wolf).

Ruehl is funny as can-be in person. Obviously easier for him in German vs. English.

I met Dennis Tinerino back in 1983. He came into the restaurant I worked at in high school. I gotta admit, being from Texas, I was disappointed in his handshake. Maybe he didn’t want to hurt me.

Fuck, I’d imagine so.

Wolf’s quads are totally insane in that photo. I mean, fuck!

Its so funny you say that because Gustavo Badell and Dennis Wolf had the softest handshake and I just thought ‘huh’ that was weird! Maybe I was expecting to get my hand crushed or something lol
