Just workin’ to pay the mortgage 2B, just payin the mortgage.
I just got kind of reamed for being ‘over budget’ on a project that I’m involved with but not managing. Not quite sure what the Proj Mgr actually does all day, but apparently what he doesn’t do is my problem.
PMP? Ba.HA!
You know, I will go out of my way, at times, to take the heat for my staff, over and over again. This accomplishes 2 things:
- My staff trust me, and respect me
- It makes the other people in a similar position as me look like the assfaces they are when they blame the staff for everything.
This sucks, because I get the shit kicked out of me in reviews, but they know what I’m doing. I don’t vocalize it, so they have to beat up someone…
Now if one of my staff is flat retarded, unmotivated, or a cocky fuck, I will toss them under the boss, and publicly bust their nuts when they ask a question/fuck something up.
Now upwards, I’m critical. Professional and civil, but I bust nuts upward constantly, lol.
I have a similar philosphy with my staff…I’m ultimately responsible for them so I take the heat when needed, the higher ups know what I’m about. I’ve found if your staff doesn’t trust you, it only takes one weasel to ruin you as a VP/Manager if you don’t have a track record and support of the other staff. We may go hammer and tongs behind closed doors, but outside we are united front…and they know I will not leave them hanging in the breeze, in regards to my higher ups, I never criticize or correctly publically. They know when behind closed doors we have an open and honest dialog and they Know I’m loyal. I won’t take un-necessary blame and I always share the credit…they know who is responsible for what, regardless of who screams “look at me, i did it”…so far it’s been a good recipe…
Yup, pretty much.
Except, while I am certainly loyal, I am currently underpaid.
That will wear on a man’s loyalty.
Not only wear on your loyalty, absolutely ruin an attitude over time. After a while it is even not about the money so much ( I say that only as that of course we want and need the money, in one way or another it’s always about the money) but just that it’s not fair and/or you are being taken advantage of.
I have worked for almost nothing and been vastly overpaid…I have found that if I truly like the place and the work, the money seems to work itself out…if I didn’t like it or didn’t like the people then over time the money never, never seemed to be enough…
I know you avatar is counting beans…which to me is accounting ( I have an accounting degree/experience and do accounting/analysis related work in the regulatory compliance arena) and I’ve found that the accounting, financial analysis field is so undervalued by those that either don’t understand the work or view it as “governmental requirements” or God forbid “tax” stuff.
I hope it gets better for you…I’m betting with your talents and sense of humor something goes your way soon…
