gutted for Italy, but atleast Spain played more direct rather than boring everyone to death.

That sucked.

I see what you mean, probably around the 10th min or so, they were just slowly passing the ball around way too much. That would be awful to watch if that’s how they normally play

It is a highly technical sport not invented for an American audience with the attention span of goldfish who need to see a score every 30 seconds.

Umm, apparently I’m not the only one that thinks this… I can watch a match with English teams no problem, yes it gets passed around but not like Spain apparently does, that’s just pointless to do it excessively. Please don’t pull the “American” card, it’s not a valid argument against me.

I am by no means a Spanish football fan boy. I do not like their smug attitude, especially the likes of Mr Superior Fabregas. I would have preferred Germany to win.

However, your comment just shows complete ignorance.

“pointless to [pass] excessively.” LOL - Spain are the most successful team in football history. So how the fuck can their approach be “pointless”? They have not conceded A SINGLE GOAL in their last 3 quarter finals, 3 semi finals and 3 finals. This is unprecedented in the history of the entire sport! They conceded ONE goal in this whole tournament!

Fair enough if you are just a casual fan passing comment, my point is you just have no idea what you are talking about.

The Spanish team “pointlessly” passing the ball around in the first 45 minutes of this final just played would have totally wiped the floor with all the greats in history - 1970 Brazil, Total Football Holland '74, you name it.

This team will be spoken of with awe 50 years from now.

Stupid comments like yours are just embarrassing.

Finally showed what they can really do tonight… have to feel for Italy going down to 10 men and coming out with a slightly embarrassing scoreline… but I have to agree this is the greatest national squad of all time assembled. It’s very, very unfair (lol) and unless something goes seriously wrong in Spanish football, they will be dominant for time to come IMO.

They will win the next world cup imo. They are all young and have more coming through. Iniesta is still only 28, Cassilas only 31. Fabregas, Pique etc etc etc are all young.

Teams are going to really struggle mentally against them too, which I think is a very important factor going into 2014.

Only real challenge will be Brazil and possibly Portugal. Disappointed in Germany, they should have comfortably beaten Italy, who are not a good team. They did very well to make the final.

I admit, I don’t know soccer too well. I don’t think Spain passed too much all game, but there was a good 4-5 min stretch where they did. As in they kept the ball in their defensive zone for a long time with no progression, rhyme or reason… My only guess is the logic is to “bore a team to death so that they get lazy”…

Again, maybe I’m over analyzing or not knowing what to watch for, but it was only for a very brief period in the game.

Awww, poor Italy. I really wanted them to win. Sucks for Buffon. Sorry for Balotelli. I would have loved him to score a few goals vs the spaniards, especially after the way the racist Spanish media painted him in the press. Motherfuckers.

I guess with one man down, there was not much the Italians could do. And all that ball passing was fucking frustrating. Fuck Spain.

World cup next. They won’t win it this time.

Hey man there is no problem with not knowing what you are talking about.

The “rhyme and reason” for keeping the ball at the back are manifold. Most obviously, it stops the opposition having the ball and attacking. Amongst others, it allows their midfield to reshape and rest. It also allows the midfield to get into better position in order for the defence to make a productive pass to them, rather than to pass it to them for no reason.

It also makes the opponent have to chase the ball, tiring them out. In MANY games, Spain score in the last 15 minutes. This is because although the opposition have set out to stifle, they have been run ragged chasing the ball and are now fatigued. This creates space as they lose their shape, and Spain then score. Spain often bring on strikers at this stage and become more aggressive.

At this level of the game, mistakes are very rare, so chances are rare. Personally, I prefer a more aggressive approach. The main reason Spain can play this way is they have such a high number of technically gifted players. The number is unheard of, particularly for a national team.

In simple terms Spain’s possession play is so successful because the opposition can’t score without the ball and their constant chasing will eventually lead to mistakes, where Spain pounce. No team in history has been good enough to be so dominant playing this way, because their players have not been good enough.

What a completely ignorant post all round. Even thrown in the race card for good measure.

Kiss my fucking ass.

I’ll use the race card if I want to. You were probably amongst the ones laughing your ass off with the way the Spanish press racially mocked Baletolli. I’ll bring it up if I feel like it. Got an issue with it? As I said, you can kiss my fucking black ass.

And fuck Spain.

Bring it on, WOrld cup. Braziiiiiiil to wiiiinnn!!

I had to record this on dvr, and after the 53min i just fast forwarded. I seriously dont think the ball moved into the spanish zone for more than the a quick goal kick back out. Glad to see Torres score, but overall a pretty worthless game.

This is even more ignorant than your last post. Well done, didn’t think it was possible.

I challenge you to respond again with something even more idiotic.
