WHAT, THE, FUCK? If you think Spain is boring then please tell me Italy makes you want to sleep within 10 seconds of watching them. Italy is the most defensive, boring football out of the whole Europe and the world.

No one can play like Spain at the moment. They pass beautifully and score goals, how is that boring?
it sounds like this should’ve been posted 10 years ago. Have you watched football this decade mate? Italy used to be very boring and defensive, they have recently been praised (on British tv) for there new more attacking style of play. They couldnt cope against Spain because Spain played more direct, hence why i said ‘atleast they didnt play boring’

Spain are very good, brilliant in fact but you cant honestly tell me you wanna watch them pass along the half way line for 80 mins?? if you watched football consistently you would understand but from your post it sounds like your listening to someone who hasnt seen modern football and is going on past styles of teams
10 years ago? look at the stats from both teams THIS EUROCUP, right now, 2012. Look at how many goals Spain scored and how many goals Italy scored(12 against 6), that is double the amount for Spain. They’re a great team, they pass, they score and it’s hard to score on them. If you think that is boring then I don’t know what you call entertaining.
Stats? Bringing that up shows you are ignorant and probably didn’t even watch the event. 4 goals were scored against the worst team in the tournament, Ireland. 2 of the 4 goals in the final were scored after Italy was down to 10 men and the result was a foregone conclusion. That’s 6 goals that don’t help your case any. Let’s bring up a 0-0 draw against Portugal and a 1-0 win over Croatia. Germany scored 10 goals but they lost to Italy 2-1 (a very “exciting” PK) so does that mean Italy is more entertaining than Germany despite scoring fewer goals overall?

oh geezer come on. I think im watching the games and you are reading stats. The game isnt played on paper my friend.

scoring 12 goals compared to 6 sounds AWESOME!! but four of them were in one game against Italy (the game i said they played NON boring) so that knocks it down to only 2 goal differnce, big deal, the reality of it really isnt that entertaining over a course of a WHOLE tournament as each team had another 5 games, the first game was against each other.

please answer me this, did you watch the Spain v Portugal game?? (or did you read the stats?) because seeing 800+ passes SOUNDS great, but when they are mostly on the half way line back and forth to each other, they aint and it bores people. It was boring, everyone said it and it was, the only people who said it wasnt were the ones that didnt watch it and read the paper the next day biggin’ up Spain.

I feel like im repeating myself alot by saying Spain are good, i dont want people to think that i think they arent but can be boring.

The next world cup will be great cos im sure teams like Brazil, Argentina and even some African teams will be so intent on beating them it can only create entertaining football.

I did watch the game against Portugal and yes it was ONE boring game out of 6.

I watched 90% of this euro and I’m not going by just stats, that would be stupid. I’m from South America, I’ve played football for most of my life so perhaps I’m not just some random dude who thought Football was cool one random day and thereafter decided to watch a game or two and then relied on mostly stats, I simply used them in this instance to prove my point on this particular subject, or more clearly, support my own opinion which cannot be changed.

Spain are the champions and they got there by scoring a lot of goals and playing well, that to me is not boring, sorry.

Read above post.

Assumptions? binging that up shows you are ignorant and makes you 110% wrong, you know nothing about me.

-I don’t understand, if stats are so unimportant then why are you using them to prove a point?

-Italy also played Ireland, the “worse team” as you call them, they only scored two goals

-Italy did beat Germany and they played very very well that game, I enjoyed it. It would also be biased to ignore that Germany looked terrible that day, everything about them was off; defense, midfield and attack.

-The fact is Spain beat Italy 4-0 and even before Italy was down one man they were already losing 2-0. Was it Spain’s fault that Italy used all of their substitutions? that is part of the game and the best team won.

So which game did Italy played was boring? Remember, your initial post was that Italy was boring. If beating Ireland 2-0 is boring then Spain beating France 2-0 is boring (which makes it 2 boring games). If Spain beating Croatia 1-0 wasn’t boring then Italy beating Germany 2-0 could not have been boring. If Italy drawing Croatia 1-1 was boring then Spain drawing Italy 1-1 was boring (which brings Spain up to 3 boring games). So again, just how many boring games did Italy play?

Spain are one of the best/ the best teams in all of football history. They are not a boring side to watch at all. Anyone who thinks so does not know the game.

Historically, Italy are a defensive nation, doesn’t mean that is boring though.

In this tournament, Italy did not play especially defensively, they usually started with both Balotelli and Cassano up front, unusually aggressive in the modern game. Also, regularly put Di Natale on.

Spain are just better than the current Italy. Italy did extremely well to make the final, this is not a strong Italian team. They would have scored more goals and been more entertaining based on their formation and ideas, but the players just aren’t that strong to put Prandelli’s ideas into play.

Also, part of the reason Spain were not as aggressive as usual is because Villa is out and they cannot risk starting Torres as he is shit. When he was good 4 years ago,he started every game. The coach is just using what he has at his disposal.

You know what’s boring? This stupid discussion. Not sorry.

ok mate, we could argue over stats all day and prove millions of points. Bottom line is that there has been alot of talk among pundits, pro’s and fans about Spain being boring, technically perfect or not they havent been pleasing on the eye OCCASSIONALLY.

All i said is that i was glad that Spain played more direct because at times i have found them boring (against Portugal in particular, which you agreed with, and France) Im clearly not the only one that thinks this of them.

If your entertained by Spain passing and passing and passing with no intention of scoring then by all means crack on. I will be watching Italy,Germany or other teams.Mainly West Ham!!! COME ON YOU IRONS!

Finally this gets mentioned. A fully healthy ESP squad wouldn’t have had to run that “false nine” with Cesc, wouldn’t have had to keep Ramos in the center and so on. The fact that ESP adjusted and still beat all opposition speaks to their talent and system and coaching.

As for them being boring, well, that’s exactly what we used to say about the first Dream Team’s (US hoops) games or when the current Miami Heat face the Charlotte Bobcats – literally so much talent assembled on one team that we tend to take them (and their success) for granted.

Btw I’m an NFL football guy thru-and-thru (really only tune in for World Cup/UEFA tourneys) and even I’m appalled by all the idiocy/ignorance in this thread. Carry on tho…

It is mind blowing.

Why some people feel the need to come and write on a subject they have absolutely no knowledge of is downright bizarre.

Some of the comments (I have only bothered with the last 3 pages or so) show literally no understanding of the game at all!

so you need knowledge to know boring when you see it?
kakno wrote:
Spain were not too convincing leading up to the final. And they just barely beat the Germans in the two previous tournaments. Definitely not GOAT.
ESP had some key injuries but still found ways (ie. all those clean sheets) to outscore each and every opponent. Nevermind that no one is calling them GOAT solely based on this recent tourney, even you know that.
yolo84 wrote:
The “rhyme and reason” for keeping the ball at the back are manifold. Most obviously, it stops the opposition having the ball and attacking. Amongst others, it allows their midfield to reshape and rest. It also allows the midfield to get into better position in order for the defence to make a productive pass to them, rather than to pass it to them for no reason.

It also makes the opponent have to chase the ball, tiring them out. In MANY games, Spain score in the last 15 minutes. This is because although the opposition have set out to stifle, they have been run ragged chasing the ball and are now fatigued. This creates space as they lose their shape, and Spain then score. Spain often bring on strikers at this stage and become more aggressive.

At this level of the game, mistakes are very rare, so chances are rare. Personally, I prefer a more aggressive approach. The main reason Spain can play this way is they have such a high number of technically gifted players. The number is unheard of, particularly for a national team.

In simple terms Spain’s possession play is so successful because the opposition can’t score without the ball and their constant chasing will eventually lead to mistakes, where Spain pounce. No team in history has been good enough to be so dominant playing this way, because their players have not been good enough.
GOOD post, very rare for this thread…

Spain can boring AT TIMES (eg. Portugal game),when their passing isn’t as cut throat as it should be- but this is no doubt one of (and most likely the) greatest national squad assembled of all time, and as Alan Hansen and crew pointed out post-match during BBC coverage- “I’ve never seen anything like it”. Unbelievable team and unbelievable play in the final. Mind blowingly good passing. Italy have surprised everyone this tournament but being up against the strongest overall squad of all time isn’t easy.
jehovasfitness wrote:

Qualify that as “boring-for-fans-of-US-sports” and I’ll buy it.

In our land of endless ADHD and 24-hr drive thrus, we’re used to plenty of “action” in our sports (and everywhere else) so even the mere mention of a 0-0 scoreless draw tends to bother us.

And it is what it is and its fine and all, but that ENG-ITA quarterfinal was as exciting a scoreless draw as I’ve ever seen even if few stateside viewers even noticed it at all…

not sure if serious.

Of course you fucking do!

How can you make a value judgement on a topic you know nothing about?

Come on, I don’t think you are that dumb, many of your posts in the nutrition forum are good.

There are endless analogies and comparisions to prove just how wrong and ignorant you are:

Reading books is dumb
Art is a waste of time
etc ad nauseum

If you know nothing about the topic to hand, how can you say anything about it?

inb4 dumb American says i know what i want and i wanna see some scores not this defensive zone BS!

First you tell me I have no knowledge on Football because I used the number of goals each team score to prove a point. Now you’re basing everything on stats,if were basing everything on stats then Spain is the best simply because they won FOUR to absolutely NOTHING,ZERO GOALS, in the final! In all reality, you have your opinion and I have mine. To me Spain does not play boring at all, they are a pleasure to watch in my eyes and obviously they have shown in the last 2 euros and last world cup that no other team can come on top but them. Call them boring, call them whatever you want, they are scoring goals and winning important trophies.

As for Italy, yes, they have indeed improved their game a lot( more attacking less defensive) but in all honesty I have a biased dislike for them. I’ve never liked Serie A or their national team, specially after all the cheating scandals.
