Another question, do joker sets revolve around mainly deads and squatting? Or can you branch off and do jokers for basically anything? I feel as though jokers for Oly lifts would be slightly more difficult.

Whatever your main lift is. They’re a bit tricky to implement productively until you’ve really got a handle on 5/3/1, especially setting your TM.

Honestly, most times (and I include myself in this until I started running Training Maximally) when you read about people saying they hit joker sets what they really mean is they started doing heavy singles and worked up past their TM.

In Beyond, you’re meant to keep to the weekly reps at least for jokers until you can’t, and then you might reduce the reps but you never, ever go above your TM.

That clears up quite a bit of confusion. I had the impression jokers were pretty much singles. Thanks for clearing that up.

They’re one of the blurrier aspects of 5/3/1 IMO.

I think they fit perfectly in Training Maximally - where the scope to do them is different and they actually do include working up to a daily max if you want - but not so well in the other templates. The key difference to me is that Training Maximally is very, very open ended. You need to think on your feet within the system every day you train, so if you do incorporate jokers it’s done with the same amount of thought.

In the other templates, they’re more of an awkward add-on to what is a very regimented system. Obviously you can use them very successfully, but I think that will mostly be the case with much more experienced people - who, ironically, are more likely to be doing something much closer to Training Maximally.

According to CT, people who dip deep down to jump are more slow-twitch dominant and those who just bend their knees a bit are more fast-twitch dominant

I would assume that this does transfer over to cleaning as well, because the movement pattern is not too different from jumping.

We can also think about this the old way - if you are explosive you need less time to create tension in your muscles and drive the bar up, so it only makes sense that only bending your knees a bit in the clean is a sign of explosiveness

Got into a semi heated discussion over the fact that Quicksilver from X-Men, is the fastest of the quicksters pretty much in all aspects, concerning speed, metabolism, and reality manipulation. He pretty much makes The Flash look like he’s running at a decent trot, and any other comic book hero/villain with super speed.

As an incredibly casual comics enthusiast but long time lover of the Flash I would just like to drop this here.

The one thing wrong with that video is that they haven’t really done enough reading into what Quicksilver can do. If you read ALF/Avengers, Flash gets his ass handed to him. The guy who made that video is trying to group them together in terms of metabolism manipulation, which they both have, but he forgot that Quicksilver is a mutant, and the Flash is still a human. The ONE thing people always seem to forget is that the Flash harnesses the Speed Force with that suit he has on. Maximoff (Quicksilver), can pretty much run around butt naked and still be quick as all outdoors. In theory it makes sense, if they choose to fight pretty much anywhere where the Speed Force is not, then the Flash is beat.

And then everyone seems to forget that Maximoff has the ability to warp reality with his speed. It gets weird going from comic book to movies, but in the movies and other comic books, he’s moving so fast he’s making water droplets appear to be moving backwards. A few science geeks, waaaaaaay geekier than myself did some number crunching for fun, and if we ran relative Earth numbers to clock his speed he’d be up there with Zoom (and Zoom kicked Flash’s ass) And Quicksilver can do the exact same thing as Zoom can by manipulating his time fields. In essence he’s warping his field of perception around yours to the point where he’s invisible. Transfer that to the Flash. Since he’s still human, he has a perception of reality hence why he’s on Earth. Aside from metabolism manipulation that’s all he’s really got. Take another quickster who manipulates time fields including his, and Quicksilver still looks like a blob even though the Flash is moving quicker than an Attosecond.

DISCLAIMER:

This is for fun, I promise!!!

Well that is some good nerdy stuff there. I have no ammo for arguing I have never really read either characters comics seriously I just happen to love the way lightning shoots off the flash in a lot of comic panels. Same reason why I love super saiyan 2. But I had recently watched that video and thought it would be interesting to see your retort and it was sure interesting :+1:
