Why? If you are a self-proclaimed atheist but invest considerable time and expense to get married in a church under a God you don’t acknowledge then you are either a hypocrite or don’t have the courage of your convictions. The idea that they are now splitting atheism into positive and negative sub-categories is proof that not everyone who call themselves ‘atheist’ understands what it means to be an atheist in the first place. Which was my point.

Or maybe I just like the traditions involved with a religious wedding. My parents put up Christmas lights in December but believe in an Eastern Religion. I wouldn’t turn around and call them hypocrites.
So what if there are sub categories? There isn’t a whole lot to being an atheist except holding a stance on specific claims.

No personal opinions whatsoever. Just studentspeak and " maybe Is"…Do you consider yourself to be an atheist?

Yes, there are crazy people out there.
That doesn’t mean that ancient people were completely wrong in their prediction because all they studied was the sun.
Honestly, it shocked me to learn this was happening because it isn’t being discussed anywhere aside from National Geographic documentaries.
From what I understand, its our satellites (read: military superiority) and 4g cell phones that would bear the brunt of an anomalous solar flare.
I’m not aware of any legit concern to anything within our planet’s magnetic field.

I Think I saw a documentary about this as well. The main concern I have about a potential flare is if it did indeed knock out all electrical items then we would run the risk of having planes falling out of the sky onto us. The other issue is how dependent we are as a society on electricity that people would not be able to function anymore. Imagine how hard people would have it now if they could not talk on the phone, or use the internet, or their televisions would no longer work. We have fallen so far into a hole that I honestly believe that something like this would cause an insane amount of problems. I know people personally that have no people skills at all because they use technology to communicate with everyone…they could not function if they actually had to WALK somewhere to talk to someone.

These points and more are brought up in that book i mentioned… I think most of the people on this site would already have a leg up over the competition, and if the shit REALLY hit the fan, everyone would be competition. The only real question is if it’s a temporary scenario, or if we really go back to zero.
I found it. It is the National Geographic Universe series, episode 1 season one. They talk about us entering the “kill zone” about 20min in. The risk are very large sun spots. They are the source of most of the potentially deadly solar flares…and we are lining right up with a huge sun spot within the next two years.

Well you’re not. Why would you even care about Judgement Day?

Are they saying the flare is going to be large enough to reach us or that it’s basically going to disrupt all our radio and power equipment?
Falls in line with what I wrote before…plus, they go into great detail in that doc about this being one especially large sun spot unlike any seen in a very long time in our history.

If you can, just watch the doc. It is very interesting. I haven’t even seen it in months so I don’t like giving word for word recounts of it.

Cool, will check that out.
I’ve actually had that series on my Instant list for awhile now but always skipped over that sun episode in favor of ‘Alien Galaxies’ and ‘The Outer Planets’ and such - excellent series no doubt

The way it was explained by experts in that field, it isn’t just cell phones. A flare the size of the one predicted would cut off ALL electrical appliances across the globe…including hospitals, your car, any planes in the sky etc. They have actually started planning procedures with airlines hoping they can predict it enough to get people out of the sky.

Yeah. Solar flares emit electro magnetic pulses. Same sort of thing that the humans use against the machines in the Matrix. Also, EMPs are generated by nuclear explosions.

It sounds like the worst that can happen is we lose power for a day. That will definitely cause some problems and im sure people will die because of it, but it doesn’t seem like its gonna be a big disaster.
I’d worry more about the US losing it’s status as the world’s reserve currency. The fall out from that and the inevitable collapse of the dollar would devastate things almost as much as a solar flare induced EMP (and with a large EMP, you would lose power for more than “just a day”). There are MANY potential disasters that could put our society or a particular region in chaos.
Personally, I think it is prudent to stock up on food and other necessities and HAVE A PLAN in the event that the shit hits the fan. I have several friends who have homesteads in rural Virginia who are completely self sufficient. I hooked up solar panels, batteries, generators and other redundant power supply systems for them. They have YEARS of food, water purifiers, guns and thousand of rounds of ammunition (some of which is cached secretly on their property). They have HAM radios and GIGS of reference material on hard drives stored inside insulated Faraday cages.
I also have friends who eat out for just about EVERY single meal and would literally STARVE in less than a week if our food supply were interrupted. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle.

So these people are regularly in downtown Toronto telling everyone the world is going to end. I also have read there are end of the world billboards popping up all over the US.
How many people here believe a Judgement Day is in fact coming? How many think it’s May 21 2011?
How much presence has this ad campaign had in your community?
What are your plans for may 21 2011?

I’ve heard nothing about this, and I live in what is supposed to be the bible belt here in BC.
As this will be may long weekend I guess most will be bbqing and drinking.

Charlie, your post just reminded me of the big cheerful billboard that used to be on the highway there “PREPARE TO MEET GOD” just before taking the mountain routes.
I’ve never seen one, I’ve also only been living in Abby since 09. I usually ignore billboards. The only billboard I ever remember seeing was one on Hwy 97 heading north into Penticton, it was Stockwell Day, he had big chicklet teeth and eyes that would follow you shudder.

It really makes me think how fucked up this world is and yeah, maybe it’s about time the human race gets erased from the surface of the earth. I hope that huge asteroid won’t miss Earth in November. I’ll be waiting for it with open arms.
