Yes, it is being buried. It’s not only the religious quacks though. You’ve also got the reactionaries who parade as atheists when they are really not. One of my closest friends maintained he was an atheist right up until he got married in a traditional church wedding. His fiancee, who wasn’t religious either, insisted on it because it was ‘romantic’. Both had to jump through hoops to get permission. I’m not going to hold it against him, but quite often atheists aren’t quite as ‘atheist’ as they make out. As usual, it’s not true for all; just for some.

The Westboro Baptist Church are pretty fucking high up there on the crazy scale:
I don’t understand. What do you mean by atheists are not as atheist as they make out?
That’s not what I said.

How does getting married in a Church not make you an atheist?
He had to become a member of the congregation, and certain conditions had to be adhered to, which kind of undermines the idea of not recognizing a ‘God’ or not wanting to get married under a huge carving of Jesus on the cross.

Then please explain what you meant by:
“I’m not going to hold it against him, but quite often atheists aren’t quite as ‘atheist’ as they make out. As usual, it’s not true for all; just for some.”
Atheism is merely a stance that that the specific claims made by religions that a god exists are false. If you reject all super natural claims but believe a god exists you are still an atheist.
If I were to ever get married, I would still have a religious wedding to satisfy my parents. It would make me no less of an atheist. The same goes for your friend (unless he started to believe in the claims the religion is making of course).
For some reason people think atheism is a religion against religion. It’s really not.

A theist is a believer in a god or gods. An atheist is someone who does NOT believe in a god or gods. Therefore, your statement is false. If you believe in a higher power, be it a single god or multiple gods, you are a THEIST. If you do not believe in a higher power of any kind you are an ATHIEST. You cannot reject the supernatural and believe in a god(s) at the same time. Gods are supernatural. Even in pagan religions the God and Goddess are seen as all-encompassing, they are everywhere and anywhere and nowhere. To a theist, whatever higher power he/she believes in just exists, no explanation necessary, it just is.

Look into the terms positive and negative atheism.
Look into the terms positive and negative atheism.

Why? If you are a self-proclaimed atheist but invest considerable time and expense to get married in a church under a God you don’t acknowledge then you are either a hypocrite or don’t have the courage of your convictions. The idea that they are now splitting atheism into positive and negative sub-categories is proof that not everyone who call themselves ‘atheist’ understands what it means to be an atheist in the first place. Which was my point.
Positive and negative atheism, wtf is that? “I don’t believe in Buddha but I believe in God,so I’m a positive atheist”.
Look into the terms positive and negative atheism.

Or maybe I just like the traditions involved with a religious wedding. My parents put up Christmas lights in December but believe in an Eastern Religion. I wouldn’t turn around and call them hypocrites.
So what if there are sub categories? There isn’t a whole lot to being an atheist except holding a stance on specific claims.

Yes, there are crazy people out there.
That doesn’t mean that ancient people were completely wrong in their prediction because all they studied was the sun.
Honestly, it shocked me to learn this was happening because it isn’t being discussed anywhere aside from National Geographic documentaries.
From what I understand, its our satellites (read: military superiority) and 4g cell phones that would bear the brunt of an anomalous solar flare.
I’m not aware of any legit concern to anything within our planet’s magnetic field.
The way it was explained by experts in that field, it isn’t just cell phones. A flare the size of the one predicted would cut off ALL electrical appliances across the globe…including hospitals, your car, any planes in the sky etc. They have actually started planning procedures with airlines hoping they can predict it enough to get people out of the sky.
I will try to find the name of the doc I watched but it is on Netflix…and frankly, all of their universe stuff is worth looking at.

If that’s the case then everyone should read Dies the Fire, by S.M. Stirling.

No personal opinions whatsoever. Just studentspeak and " maybe Is"…Do you consider yourself to be an atheist?

In the meantime, look up their national geographic doc on the universe when they talk about the sun. I think that is the one its on.
