Electrolytes, Seizures and Dilantin

Recently my mom who is in her mid 60’s had a seizure after her regular exercise session. It was a mild workout of 20 min on a stationary bike. When she finished she drank her bottle of water, got dizzie, started to sweat, passed out and had a seizure. Tests indicated that it was electrolyte related. Her doctor started her on Dilatin and said she will have to take it for the rest of her life.

This is the only seizure she has ever had. is it unreasonable to suggest that she would not have another if her electrolyte levels were controlled, maybe by sipping an elctrolyte drink during exercise or perhaps throughout the day? It seems that they are loading her up on meds without addressing the cause.

I hate to see my mom become one of those old folks that eat more weight in pills than food.
Any advice or references would be much appreciated.

tiny,
my girlfriend is 32 and had her first seizure about 3 months ago. we have been going through the same thing. i am no expert but i have been sitting through neurologist and e.r. visits since the first one. she was given dilatin by the e.r. doctor and immediatley taken off of it by her neurologist.

my advice would be that if she is not seeing a neurologist then she needs to be. it is possible to have a seizeure and never have another one. unfortunately my girl was diagnosed with epilepsy so she will need to be on siezure meds, but not dilatin. this was due to it being for older people and the danger of getting pregnant if on that medication. i realize your concerns are different, but i hope this helps. if you want to discuss this more feel free to p.m. me.
