Okay…now that I have your attention, the point of this thread is for T-members to share real life encounters in which they’ve had to explain to a misinformed moron why we do what we do, specifically in regards to nutrition. For example, I’m going to share a quick story of how I surprised a female medical student with information regarding eggs that she was completely unaware and misinformed about…(paraphrased)
Girl- “So you’re into working out?”
Me- “Oh yeah, it’s a passion of mine, training and nutrition.”
Girl- “That’s really great, where do you get all of your information from?”
Me-“Well, I’m an active reader of a website called T-Nation that caters to weightlifting, nutrition, etc. I also have read tons of books…I certainly don’t get my information from pediatricians and physicians (said with a sarcastic and joking manner)”
Girl- “haha, yeah, I know what you mean, it seems that a lot of people in the medical field are misinformed when it comes to nutrition.”
Me- “I know! I can’t believe it! My 16 year old cousin told me the other day that his doctor said eggs are bad for you and will raise your cholesterol!”
Girl- “Well, he’s right, they will, they aren’t that good for you.”
Me- “Ummm, that’s an old wives tale that is completely not true.”
Girl- “Yes it is, eggs have fat in them.”
Me- “Okay… well the fat in eggs is not the same thing as fat in birthday cake. Do you know what choline is?”
Girl- “No”
Me- “Choline is a nutrient that is essential for cardiovascular health and brain function and for the health of your cell membranes. Besides that, choline has been proven to lower your LDL, and raise your HDL. (Med students eyes start to widen) You see, when they did studies with eggs, it was at a time that they didn’t even know there were 2 types of cholesterol. So when people ate eggs, they said, “oh no, their cholesterol is going up, they must be bad.” Little did they know, it was actually raising the good kind, and lowering the bad. Plus, eggs are one of the only foods that contain all essential amino acids in them.”
Girl- “Wow, I really didn’t know any of that. That’s really interesting, I guess you’re right, they need to expand our study of nutrition.”
Me- “Yeah, well, whatever, they taste great also.”
