'Eggs are Bad for You'

Okay…now that I have your attention, the point of this thread is for T-members to share real life encounters in which they’ve had to explain to a misinformed moron why we do what we do, specifically in regards to nutrition. For example, I’m going to share a quick story of how I surprised a female medical student with information regarding eggs that she was completely unaware and misinformed about…(paraphrased)

Girl- “So you’re into working out?”
Me- “Oh yeah, it’s a passion of mine, training and nutrition.”
Girl- “That’s really great, where do you get all of your information from?”
Me-“Well, I’m an active reader of a website called T-Nation that caters to weightlifting, nutrition, etc. I also have read tons of books…I certainly don’t get my information from pediatricians and physicians (said with a sarcastic and joking manner)”
Girl- “haha, yeah, I know what you mean, it seems that a lot of people in the medical field are misinformed when it comes to nutrition.”
Me- “I know! I can’t believe it! My 16 year old cousin told me the other day that his doctor said eggs are bad for you and will raise your cholesterol!”
Girl- “Well, he’s right, they will, they aren’t that good for you.”
Me- “Ummm, that’s an old wives tale that is completely not true.”
Girl- “Yes it is, eggs have fat in them.”
Me- “Okay… well the fat in eggs is not the same thing as fat in birthday cake. Do you know what choline is?”
Girl- “No”
Me- “Choline is a nutrient that is essential for cardiovascular health and brain function and for the health of your cell membranes. Besides that, choline has been proven to lower your LDL, and raise your HDL. (Med students eyes start to widen) You see, when they did studies with eggs, it was at a time that they didn’t even know there were 2 types of cholesterol. So when people ate eggs, they said, “oh no, their cholesterol is going up, they must be bad.” Little did they know, it was actually raising the good kind, and lowering the bad. Plus, eggs are one of the only foods that contain all essential amino acids in them.”
Girl- “Wow, I really didn’t know any of that. That’s really interesting, I guess you’re right, they need to expand our study of nutrition.”
Me- “Yeah, well, whatever, they taste great also.”

Dietary cholesterol contributes to less than 10% of total circulating blood cholesterol in the body. Exercise will play a bigger role in total cholesterol levels than eggs will. Its mostly genetic.

That being said, If you’re a person with chronic high blood cholesterol I would focus on exercising more, eating more fiber and reducing trans fat, sat. fat and dietary cholesterol intake.

If you don’t have a cholesterol problem, then eggs most likely aren’t a realistic concern.

Not only are they not a concern, they are extremely good for you, did you know they are linked to fighting off breast cancer?

Do you have a link for that study? I’m curious.

Did she fall in love with you after that conversation?

/Joke

lol she was a little taken a back, but I was slick and didn’t make it sound too condescending, so everything was fine…yeah, here’s one link;

Now I’m not saying it WILL prevent breast cancer, just like eating blueberries will help you remember things, but it’s interesting regardless.

Which would be a nice benefit… If you had breasts.

i hear women love being told they’re wrong.

on a side note, my gf likes to get on my case about my supplement usage. she was complaining about always having cold hands, so i ordered her some arginine and suggested drinking a bit more water. her hands are no longer cold. it frustrates me that even though supps helped her out, she thinks i’m just wasting my money on everything i buy. grr.

I’ll throw down a good story

Guy-“Go on son, but go in there”

Guy-(to me) “Your digusting”

Me-“Excuse me”

Guy-Mixing up your steroid muscle drinks in front of my son.

Me-Erm…(I literally had to take a few moments to process what was being said"

Guy-Yeah, you bloody muscle head steroid junkies, this is a family gym, i’m going to report you to the manager.

Me-You do that, in the mean time this (points to drink) is a protein shake, made from basically powdered cheese. They sell them in the café out the front.

Guy-But it says “Muscle” on the bottle (It was a maximuscle shaker)

Me-So? Would you report me for eating cheese or a piece of chicken? Its basically the same thing. Besides if I were on steroids, i’d be pretty pissed off if these were the results.

NOW, for the record at the time I was about 260lbs, 25% body fat. I do not look like a steroid user, I look like I lift (fat guy with decent forearms), but looking at me, you can tell i’m a newbie to this, any of you would, make no bones about it. If I did a RMP i’d get a 2 if I was real lucky.

I’ve had the eggs arguement with a guy at work, who’s a PE teacher. I just said about the LDL/HDL stuff, and the fact that studies didnt know there were two types, blah blah, found an article or two to back me up. He was grateful for the info.

Men can get breast cancer too funny man.

I know what you mean, my cousins mom won’t let him take a protein powder supplement because its bad for his kidneys. IT DRIVES ME NUTS.

Yeah just to many misinformed people. I’ll have people tell me eggs are bad while they wolf down some soda, fruit and a bag of chips. I think most their diets go like this 70% carbs 20% fat 10% protein.

Person:Omg you eat 6 to 8 eggs at one time?
Me:Yeah so what?
Person:Didn’t you know they’re bad for you?
Me:Why? I don’t have genetic cholestrol problems and I’m not obese. Infact for most people eggs raise good HDL cholesterol and are perfectly fine.
Me:I ate over half a dozen eggs everyday for a striaght year. I got tests done at the end of the year. Can you explain why my bad cholestrol was only around a 100 and my HDL was 67 above optimal?
Person:Ummm well I don’t know

No shit Sherlock, but it’s extremely rare.

Here’s some all time favorite quotes.

“But it’s low fat!”

“Eating fat will make you fat.”

“It’s a cleansing diet.”

“But carbs are required for energy and brain functions!”

“What am I supposed to do? Not eat it?”

“They’re baked not fried so they’re healthy!”

Umm…not unless you don’t count ALL meat/fish/foul and dairy products

there is way too much stupid in this world to deal with related to nutrition and exercise/fitness

a while back i still tried to give some advice on nutrition and supplements but eventually realized that most people just have a mental wall in their mind where no foreign argument will penetrate, so i said “fuck it” and just stick to what has worked for me for years

and to those who preach “EAT TEH WHOLE GRAINZ” i reply with “enjoy your diabetes buddy”

Man, I put up with this shit daily. I work with a lot of doctors. One guy asked me why I eat so much meat. I said ugh… protein. He said why don’t you just eat legumes. I said you mean beans. You don’t want to be around me if I eat beans.

well if you knew that, then i don’t get your previous comment. no worries.

Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard is “you only need 1gm of protein per kilo of body weight and thats only for endurance athletes” This was in a kinesiology class

it’s absurd…here’s a response to when people say, “I ate eggs all the time for years and my cholesterol is too high”

Response 1- well, what else did you eat along with your eggs for those years? Fried foods? Cakes? Cookies? Pancakes loaded with butter? French fries? The answer is almost always…“well yeah” And then you say, the eggs had a minute effect on your cholesterol dumb ass, it was everything else
Response 2- if you have a history of high cholesterol in your family, I would not eat 8 eggs a day, 2 or 3 is perfectly fine, and will do you good.

In response to, “why do you need so much protein?” Just say, “I weight train and I need an influx of amino acids throughout the day to help repair the muscle damage” They will just look at you and not know how to respond.
