Egg Yolks and Cholesterol

I read John Berardi’s article named ‘Dear Mom and Dad’, in which he explains some common misconceptions about nutrition. But I still have a question, that I hear quite frequently. (With warnings in abundance, saying I am certainly risking a heart attack, and soon :-p)

I would like to ask you all about eggs. Everybody is constantly saying how bad the egg yolk is for your cholesterol.

(some say there’s about 213 milligrams of cholesterol per egg). Is there any truth to this story, and should I limit my yolk-intake to X per week? (my doctor freaked when she heard I was eating 2 full eggs a day, saying I was going to regret it in the near future).

Furthermore, does this limitation change if you are an athlete, for example a powerlifter, like me.

No, egg yolks in of themselves are not “bad” for you. Most food (eschewing boxed fatty death, which I’m not sure is food) is only “bad” food when eaten in the improper quantities or at the wrong times. So long as 1. The eggs fit into your caloric and macronutrient profile and 2. You’re balancing your fat intake between Sat/Poly/Mono and focusing on getting in proper amounts of Omega-3s, I wouldn’t worry about it. There’s very little evidence to show that dietary cholesterol is related to the build-up of said substance inside your body.

Do you, of does anyone know of certain scientifical studies that prove yolks harmless to our cholesterol? Having such a study will surely convince the doctor and other unbelievers. I certainly hope so :-p

Hey,

If you go to www.mercola.com and do a search on ‘eggs’ it will bring up a bunch of articles on them which are referenced from studies… whether you believe the information there or not is another thing.
I can say that my family and I have experienced health benefits from a lot of his ideas.
As with all other things I don’t agree with everything he says. I can’t stand the raw vegetable juice/pulp - I can’t digest it properly. Nice idea in theory though. Heh.

Eating cholesterol does not raise cholesterol in your blood. Eating saturated fat raises cholesterol in your blood stream.

About 80% of all cholesterol in your blood stream does not come from food, it is produced by your liver. One reason that statin drugs work is that they attack the real source of the cholesterol problem (if it is in fact a problem). However, they also attack the liver which makes them a dangerous drug, and far more dangerous than the actual cholesterol in your blood stream.

From what I have studied, (my dad has a cholesterol problem, he’s in his 80’s) it’s not the cholesterol which is the problem, the real problem is inflammation! As the cholesterol passes through if there is no inflammation in the arteries you don’t have a problem. If the arteries are inflamed the cholesterol tends to stick to the sides, builds up and becomes a blockage.

If there is no inflammation there is no cholesterol problem. This would also explain why half the people who die of a heart attack have high cholesterol and the other half have normal or low cholesterol!

To reduce inflammation take large amounts of fish oils (and eat fish). And also train 5 or 6 days per week. Make sure that at least 2 or 3 of those days are aerobic in nature (lot’s of ways to train aerobic without doing distance which destroys muscle).

Hope the above helps.

My brother-in-law is at least 250Lbs and does not work out. His doctor told him that eggs were bad for his cholesterol level. He then told his doctor he was going to eat four(4) eggs every day. He did and at the end of six(6) weeks his cholesterol level was lower.

Listen to ZEB.

I don’t have much to say, I just want to say how much I love eggs.

Great post!
I remember hearing the same as what you said above, recently from another site I’m a member of (paid site).

Cholesterol isn’t bad, it’s an indicator that something else is wrong. Your body uses cholesterol for a reason, the problem is when your body has to use too much of it in your arteries and they get clogged.

(Zeb said it better though so you can ignore my post and re-read what’s quoted above

I ate 16 whole eggs yesterday.

I beleive the eggs being bad for your cholesterol myth was started by the same person that said Avocado’s full of cholesterol. Which is totally impossible due to a lack of blood in an Avocado.

Hopefully your doctor is not a nutritionist. I can’t believe she was freaking out about two a day. I usually eat six whole and 18 total whites/day.

thanks for the feedback guys. It’s been a big help;)

(just too bad you’ve got to pay for that full article :p)
