I tried to search around and find out but was unsuccessful so here is my question
What does everyone here do about having Eggwhites? Do you guys get your eggwhites the old fashioned way by straining them out of whole eggs or do you guys buy the boxed/carton of egg whites and go that route? I’ve done both before and usually go the whole egg route but was wondering what everyone else thought/did
I buy liquid egg whites in cartons at Trader Joes. Actually pretty cheap. I had looked into getting the giant tubs online, but the shipping always kills the cost effectiveness.
^^So you think its cheaper to get the egg whites in the carton vs getting them out of whole eggs? I was going to do an experiment and see how much egg white volume i’d get from a carton of 12 and then do a cost comparison but I havent yet. If anyone has done this and knows which is cheaper I’d love to hear about it
I use sam’s club egg whites… it’s 7.50 for 1/2 gallon of egg whites. They are cheaper than any of the other versions, pasteurized, and in convenient 16 oz containers instead of 5 gallon drums.
I buy them in the carton. I used to get them from Trader Joe’s, but Safeway recently came out with their own version (100% egg whites in a carton) that is the same but cheaper.
I believe it actually IS cheaper to use regular eggs and just strain it yourself. Plus you miss out on the goodness of tossing a couple yolks in when using Carton whites.
thats kinda what I was thinking Akuma… I think it would be cheaper and when I like to always put in at least a couple whole eggs cause they taste so much better when they have a couple yokes in it
I think if you buy your eggs 60 at a time (like costco) then de-yolking your eggs is definitely cheaper.
I’ve see the mass deyolking method of just cracking a ton into a big bowl, then picking up yolks by hand and removing them. Leaving a big bowl of whites. Haven’t tried it.
there are much bigger ones (that i couldnt find) but you get the idea… although i feel like im wasting the yolks when i do it yolk by yolk. and like scott said most of the bulk distributors have egg whites for pretty cheap

Someone less lazy than me could do the math, and it will vary depending on how cheap you can get the eggs but the sams club version is pretty convenient and cost effective for me. It’s literally half the price versus buying the egg beaters at a regular grocery store and if my math serves me right about 1/4 of the cost of buying a dozen eggs and separating them. Also considering they are pasteurized and there is no worry of raw eggs/is it bioavailable etc.
I get a dozen or so farm fresh eggs(local to me) for free and add in a whole egg for every 6 whites I use

BAM, and with savings like that, you could still eat an assload of eggs, AND fling eggs at passers by on the street, AND STILL break even with those who buy egg white cartons. Its win freaking win.
