Effects of Sugar On Muscle Growth

I tried searching and didn’t quite find an answer. Then again, my searching skills are lacking.

How does sugar affect muscle growth? I’m in a bulking phase for a while longer and I’ll be the first to say I’m pretty uneducated about the technical or scientific aspects of food and dieting.

I know the basics and try to eat clean, but I’ve never taken sugar content into account. I usually mix FF chocolate milk in my shakes which has a pretty high sugar content as you can imagine; so yeah, I rarely worry about sugar. But keey in mind, I don’t eat candy bars or cookies or anything, just ‘healthy’ food with that has fair amount of sugar in it.

So whats the deal with my sweet tooth? Is it seriously impeding my progess?

sugar = carbs and carbs are more than needed for muscle growth

if you want to eat sugar post workout because its a fast acting carb, other than that your better off with bread/oatmeal

For bulking, no. For cutting, yes.

Sugar makes your body release insulin into your system. Insulin is very anabolic, so, if you’re bulking… anabolism = good. On the same hand, high insulin levels can make you put on more fat.

So, while cutting, lower insulin levels will usually mean faster fat loss.

That aside, how much do you weigh? How tall are you? How long have been training? Whats your current diet like?

I’m 5’10 about 212. I do compounds with some Isolation afterwards. For compounds I usually do either 4 or 5 by 6 and for isolations I usually do 3x8. My diet is mostly the typical bulking foods, but I’m not terribly strict with it. I wont hesitate to go out for a burger or pizza with friends. I don’t really feel like typing everything out haha.

Thanks for the insight, though.
