But remember Thor’s 501 attempt at the Arnold, on the elephant bar. If his left foot didn’t move, if he had figure 8 straps, a deadlift suit etc., any one of the 3 imo Thor would’ve gotten the 501 already. Martins Licis himself has said (before the current “controversy”) that the elephant bar is harder because you can’t “rip” it, or the whip of the bar will mess with the lift.
I don’t think 501 is in question at this point. 520? Man, that would be so insanely awesome to see.
add: assuming 501 is successful, I think Thor will defer to his coaches’ advice (as he usually does) on the final attempt, hype aside (kayfabe is inaccurate tbh, because kayfabe is WWE, and is fake)
I wonder if he could take the raw WR right now given his current strength. Also makes me wonder how much Benedikt Magnusson had in him at the time he pulled 1015 if he were trained with a suit and straps.
He was close last time, he would have been very close if he had hit squat depth. He’s much, much stronger now than he was then - particularly his bench.
I think an ATWR is a real chance if he takes a good deload then aims for a meet post lock down. The problem is, how can you plan for a meet in this environment?
The Wildcard of being in competition without equipment control. You never know what someone will get on stuff, or if the equipment is going to be right. It might seem fine testing with 5-600 lbs, but totally not fine with the serious weight.
I feel like the drama isn’t as synthetic as it seems. I do feel as though it is provoked for the sake of promotion, but I also think it’s allowing athletes a chance to let their true feelings soak through. I mean even Rob Kearney dropped a bomb on Hall.
I’m all for this. Strongmen are too nice nowadays. Need more Svend Karlsen’s screaming, “YOU DONT HAVE TO BE FAT TO BE STRONG” on TV.
Even in team sports you are rarely going to see the coach instead of the athlete for promotion. Hell, Lebron gets put on the Depth chart as player, coach and GM.
