how does this compare to the spyderco sharpmaker? anyone here have experience with the sharpmaker? a couple of blade forums are really high on it[/quote]

I mainly use the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Hard to beat, works on serrated and non-serrated. If you keep your knives sharp all the time, you’ll only need the fine grit stones, thus extending the life of the knife. But the medium grit stones are handy if you’re working on a really dull blade.

I worked my way though college at a cutlery store, and I’ve had the same Sharpmaker since then. Highly recommended.

I use a two sided stone, diamond stone for harder blades, and a tool for sharpening serrations.

I can generally make most knifes shaving sharp without much effort. Unless, they are made with shitty steel.

thanks Chris. I assume that you are talking about the ceramic stones and saying you likely do not need the diamond stones?

For the Sharpmaker, the diamond sleeves would never really be needed, unless you need to restore a very jacked up knife. Mainly the diamond sleeves are for aggressively re-shaping, re-beveling or re-profiling a blade. I’ve never needed these myself, just the standard ceramic rods, and usually only the fine ones.

I’m just a suburban knucklehead with no regular use for a pocketknife, but this is my keychain and carried everyday.

I walked into an Army-Navy surplus store when I was about 11, carrying $80 of saved allowance in hand (literally clutched in my hand, not in my pocket).

This caught my eye and the 20-something kid behind the counter started chatting, saying how it’s silver because “it’s the one the real Swiss Army carries.” I ask how much it is. He says “How much do you have?” I say I only have $80. He says, “That’s okay, this is exactly $80.” So I get it.

Turns out they’re like 20-30 bucks. Life lesson.

It’s still in great shape after 20 years of various levels of use/misuse/neglect/abuse. Sharp and comfortably stiff to open into position. I chipped the tip off the awl a while ago, not sure from what.

I prefer Flash II which is literally disappears in your pocket and lockable in case you have kids. Not perfect, but really good.

I’d say it’s totally worth its 50$ especially for SOG.
