Eating for Lean Mass Gain / Help Needed

Ageed!

I never refer to the average population when discussing BB with lifters that are beyond that point. This pic is ‘pool/beach ready’, I’m on the right and was 208 that morning. My guess is it would take another 15-20lbs to be in the stage ready zone. Pool/Beach ready=abs all in.

I think bulking is brilliant. But I will also say getting near or over 20% bodyfat is in no way good.
It is, if you’re aiming for scale weight. Ive done this before in the end it doesnt give any greater results than slower and steadier approach. IME
^this. These “bulks” that people go on and get sloppy and nasty is beyond me. If you were to ask Shelby or JM about their “Bulks” they would tell you that they almost never go over 12-14% BF. In some cases they keep abs showing almost always. LMFAO at easy to strip off fat. That is a false statement for (according to a statistic that I made up for this post) about 98% of the population.
Yes, if you were to ask Shelby and JM, SEASONED PROS, about THEIR bulks they would tell you they never go over 12-14%; however, as someone who actually worked with shelby while gaining over the past year he did have me get up to gasp more than 20% body fat. I’m just surprised to hear such a naive statement coming from you considering the training age and the actual age of the two you posted, as well as their level of discipline in the field. For a newer, younger lifter who can afford to make much much more rapid gains, it’s a different story…even under the coaching of the two men you mentioned themselves!

Very good posts from you in this thread. You can’t predict when and how much your body will supercompensate. Obviously steroids change what results you see from what practices.

Ok, maybe I’m ignorant, but that’s the beach ready I was referring to as well. Mid to low- teens BF% wise. Abs showing likely, lean to the general population, but in no way what serious lifter would consider ‘ripped’ or close to contest condition (hope that doesn’t come off as insulting).

I feel that’s a fine level of leanness to stay around and still gain IMO. Some can go higher, maybe some could go lower, but in no way do I think that’s ‘too lean’ to stay near during a bulk. I guess I don’t see someone staying in that range would be hindering their gains.

Think everyone needs to read this post again if you missed it. Straight from someone who has worked with shelby on a gain diet not a contest prep. Also Shelby is now an IFBB pro

If you can make gains while in that condition as an adult you are fortunate indeed, and in a very small % of the population. I could never have done that and would still weigh 160lbs if I had tried. IMO…it is the lifter that understands themselves best, and has the self discipline to act on that knowledge, that stands the best chance to succeed. You are certainly well on your way, I wish you the best.
