DZ's Training Log

All the more impressive! Sounds like that is the right mix for you.

I would lose count, too, if it were not for the adjustable outer dial on an old diving watch that I use to keep track of the time and how many speed sets I have done.

DZ, your workouts are looking really good. Do you see any problem maintaining your weight and staying in the same weight class or do you plan on moving up eventually?

Thanks Hel, I was 204 at the last meet and lifted in the 220 class. I weighed myself today and I was 208, after having a shake for breakfast and sucking back water at the gym. I’ve cut some of the crap from my diet, but I’m not loosing any weight. So, I’ll not worry too much about it and stay in the 220 class.

Means you’ve got plenty of room to build instead of wondering where to cut. Takes courage, but you’ve been showing that.

Nice lifting DZ…

I think I need another goal too… I might try powerlifting…

Train at the body weight you feel comfortable at.Your training is moving along nice.No doubt you will make big lifts at 220.

No matter which weight class, the training is the same. If you want to grow into the 220’s that’s KooL, or, you can be really strict and train at 3-5 lbs over the 198’s and cut weight for the contest…either way, you will train the same…just be a tad stronger each week as you “grow” in to the 220 class limit. I have tried both; because the 198’s are closer to my natural weight I usually stay close, usually within 5 lbs…lately I have tried getting ‘heavier’ but my lifts didn’t go up as much as I expected and with little carry-over strength back down to the 198’s. So my plan is to stay close and maybe even under as I need to lose some bodyfat for health reasons. My bodyfat at 198 is ~15-18% as measured by BIA. That’s over 30 lbs of fat distributed over my body!!! I’d like to get it down to the 10-12% range w/o sacrificing too much strength; possibly dropping down into the 181’s, then unto the 165’s where i started my PL career 30 years ago. No matter, good luck with your training no matter which weight class you eventually compete in! Happy Memorial Day!

Thanks Elaikases

Bunny, you’d like powerlifting.

Thanks Jimmy!

Damn QT, if you’re carrying that much extra weight I must be a fat ass. While I eat very heathy, I don’t eat like a bodybuilder. Too many potatoes and starches I’m sure.

You’ve got the perfect attitude and body type for powerlifting. Go for it.

While the desire was there this morning, the body was not cooperating once I got started.

Rear Delt Raises
2x12x20

Sumo Deads (First time with these)
1x8x135
1x6x185
1x4x225
1x4x275
1x2x315
1x1x335
1x1x355
375 did not get locked out.

I was pretty pleased with the pulling though. I’ve always pulled conventional, and watch others pull sumo and get bigger lifts. So, I’m gonna practice these and see if they work better for me.

Yeah - I’ve read that if you’re a conventional puller, then training sumo is a good way to increase your competition pull and vice versa.

Never manned up enough to try it myself. I’ll bet you’d’a got 370 and that you’ll get 375 next time. Nice pulling!

DZ,

I’ve been experimenting with my DL since I am new to powerlifting. Given my height (tall), I have tried everything from conventional to sumo style deadlifts. I agree that switching styles can only help in terms of overall strength. Keep us posted on how it goes.

mday

Thanks guys, I’ll keep trying Sumo for a while.

Skidmark, that avatar is really creepy bro!

Looking good, DZ. I can only imagine where you would end up with another 20 lbs., if you choose.

You seem to do relatively more warm-up sets when benching. Is that a particular preference or need?

Thanks Geech! I’m not really looking to put on anymore weight, but I’ll keep eating big and lifting heavy, and if I put on weight because I’m putting on muscle and getting stronger, well, that’s fine.

It’s interesting you’ve noticed that. I’ve actually been trying to do fewer warmup sets, on squat, and deads. But my shoulders give me a lot of trouble so I try to do a little more, but usually just with the bar to get things moving. Perhaps I should try to do less and see if I’m still in pain afterwards.

Woke up late this morning and not really feeling like doing much of anything. But that wouldn’t do, so my daughter and I went for a mile and a half run. Finally one of my kids is big enough to exercise with me, she’s 12. Same one I pulled out of public schools back in December. She was being picked on really badly, and it was having an effect on her, and her learning. She’s a much happier kid now, and learning at an incredible rate. I might remove the 9 year old from public school in the Fall.

Good for you DZ! We have been dealing with “mean girl syndrome” and how it effects our daughter. She is 10. The worst thing for us, is all the kids involved are the “good kids”. It is tough being a small school system.

Damn I didn’t know being a boy was so easy!

It’s cool your daughter likes to run. Mine gets all freaky when I try to do ballet steps in my steel toe boots. At least I can get mine to ride the Harley with me.

Maybe fewer, but sufficient warm-ups will set you up better for your work sets. I am sure you will know quickly what is best for you either way. It has been one of the better ‘discoveries’ for me, at least.
