Dumb Training Sayings - RANT

Toned actually does not bother me. Yes, it is used incorrectly. Techincally, tone refers to muscle tonus, the degree to which a muscle is contracted at rest. But EVERYONE understands what someone means when they use it in the vernacular, particularly women. And it’s a helluva lot shorter than describing what it conveys. Toned means reasonably lean with some but not significant muscular development. No striations, some visible muscle definition, but little separation. Retain a modicum of softness. Basically, the look that Sexy Female Training is designed to achieve. A woman can say, “I would like to develop some but not significant muscular development, obtain a reasonable level of leanness. I don’t wan’t striations. I want some visible muscle definition but little separation. I’d like to retain a modicum of softness.” OR, she can say, I’d like to get toned.

That’s true. Good point. I guess my beef is not with the word itself, so much as the misconceptions of how to achieve “toned” status.

Yeah. That definitely makes sense.

When I used to be a trainer, I hated when the other trainers I worked with used the term “lose weight”.

Recently (I’m no longer a trainer, it was a job I could do at the time to make ends meet) a woman asked me how to lose weight, man, I just said if you want to lose weight cut off a limb. I looked at her seriously for a moment, then I asked her if she thought she was heavy or fat, let’s get the point do you feel you need to to lose fat because weight is easy to lose. She said she wanted to lose some fat.

I think society or the mis-informed media have used the term “lose weight” to be polite with people who the general public would call fat. Face it if you’re fat, you’re fat! I have some fat to lose, so? Obese people have a lot of fat to lose, I doubt some 250+ lbs bodybuidlers in contest shape, have weight to lose.

“Toned” used in the wrong sense pisses me off as well.

“Muscle bound” that was lost in translation over the years as well.

To get “in-shape”

“Lose weight” bothers me too, as I think it causes the general public to undereat while dieting and lose their muscle mass. Skinny-fat then, at the same body fat percentage at which they began.

If it was called “lose fat” from the get-go, then maybe they’d realize that size is more than just lard, and endeavor to maintain muscle while shredding.

Most of America is in shape.

The shape just happens to be a circle.

Yes, I know that this is a dumb training sayings thread. :-D[/quote]

Yea, my girl friends said that a lot…
Oh yea…High five.
(it had to be said)

Now, if I hear another skinny, weak bastard tells me he doesn’t do bench presses or squats, etc, etc, because they are not “functional” movements, I will puke. Then, as I am pushing his face into my vomit I will ask him “So what “functional” movement would you recommend to get your face out of my up chuck?”

“Easier to do…” Fuuuuuck!

Women “Don’t want to look like a man.”
