So I was taking one of those ‘are you an alcoholic’ screening quizzes tonight on the internet. Whenever I see those, either on the net, or in my text books (i’m a psych major) I always feel like they’re geared towards people with families / successful people.
Some questions include ‘does your family feel you drink to much’ and ‘is your business suffering because of your drinking’ and ‘does your drinking interfere with family duties’ etc.
Does anyone else ever feel this way? I’m really curious if my drinking habits are out of the ordinary. I KNOW I drink more than someone who has a family…but out of single guys in their mid twenties…am I out of the ordinary?
This is like discussing religion or politics: Too much opinion, close-mindedness,and biased “facts”…No matter what, there will be those that will want to browbeat you about having a stinkin’ drink…I’m from the old school:
If you are going to drink, drink the best, do it with class, be able to hold your likker’, and always maintain a level of control (No binge drinking, that is counterproductive, you have nothing to prove to anyone under those conditions, play smart). That is the standard.
Other than that, ignore these do-gooding, totalitarian fools obsessed with “demon rum” that seek to force their fanaticism on you. there was a reason for men gathering to drink brandy and smoke cigars…Be a man and use booze the way it was meant to be used, the thinking mans’s way: a sensual addition to the good life…

Agreed. This is part of the reason I enjoy craft beer so much: it can taste good, have great smell and color, and its totally acceptable to have an aesthetic appreciation for beer like you would wine.
"Some questions include ‘does your family feel you drink to much’ and ‘is your business suffering because of your drinking’ and ‘does your drinking interfere with family duties’ etc. "
Those qustions don’t get me, I can truthfully answer “no” to them all.
The ones that get me tagged with “problem drinker” are ones like “Do you have more than five drinks at once?” and “Do you enjoy social situations more when you drink?” Yes and yes.
Hey if some online quiz gives me a label, whatever. As long as the drinking doesn’t cause me break the law or create real problems for my friends, family, or myself - I don’t care.

If you are getting busted for DUIs (or driving drunk in general), you have a problem.
If your work suffers and you miss out on promotions, can’t pass tests at school, or can’t keep a job, you have a problem.
If you require liquor to function socially, you probably have a problem.
If you are getting thrown in jail, consistently getting into fights, or otherwise risking your life or future because you are getting drunk, you have a problem.
If your only real recreation is drinking, you have a problem.

Females seemingly get a free pass on this one.
How so?
You’re usually better off avoiding the sober chick(s) at the bar.

Interesting that in a discussion about requiring liquor to function socially, you instantly reference the bar as the social scene. This could become a SATMA thread really quick!

I’m not talking about requiring alcohol to get laid (being ugly doesn’t automatically make one an alcoholic), or to provide an excuse for casual sex. Those are separate issues from alcoholism.

Neither was I. It was just the observation that society is that much more accommodating of alcohol abuse by women.

Nope.
As per Wikipedia: “alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages despite the health problems and negative social consequences it causes.”

Define regular basis. once a month? Once a week? Once a day? Once an hour? If you have a set interval of time between the incidents of drinking that would be “regular”. So maybe we should just keep ourselves guessing and only drink spontaneously to avoid alcoholism.
Alcoholism is defined as, “a chronic disorder characterized by dependence on alcohol, repeated excessive use of alcoholic beverages, the development of withdrawal symptoms on reducing or ceasing intake, morbidity that may include cirrhosis of the liver, and decreased ability to function socially and vocationally.” (www.dictionary.com)

Wikapedia is not an all knowing work; it is a work in progress. How ever you are entitled to disagree

Excellent point I would say, regular would be any of your possibilities, how ever once a month would defiantly be no problem unless you were the type to binge. I would say if you use alcohol on a regular basis you have a dependency even if mild
