As was already stated, the cop who was cornered did not fire, his partner did. Something went wrong before the shots were fired. The guy in the wheelchair got too close to the cop and pulled out a pen. Lack of time and distance was probably the result of under estimating the guy because he was in a wheelchair and an amputee. Cornered, the non-shooting officer could not create time and distance and his partner, who feared for the other officer’s life, stopped the threat.
Pens are potentially lethal items. I colleague of mine responded to a call involving an emotionally disturbed teenage girl. When it came time to arrest her, she resisted. While he was taking her to the ground, she pulled out a small screwdriver and punctured his thigh. It penetrated his leg to the bone, and was an inch away from his femoral artery.
You don’t know the positioning of anyone in this situation, so wait for the details to emerge before you come to your conclusions.
Pretty funny how the presumption of innocence doesn’t work for everyone, huh?

I don’t hate all cops and understand they put themselves in situations that most arn’t willing to so we must afford them more discretion. But this cops never make a bad call or one that should get them terminated or prosecuted is bs.
I don’t believe anyone said that cops are perfect or don’t make mistakes, but we shouldn’t assume they fucked up because someone other than the cops involved is dead.

That would be impossible, right?

I’m sure they don’t hate all civilians either.
FWIW, I don’t think anyone is debating your last point. I know that, myself, I was only saying that you don’t really know everything you need to know in order to conclude what you did. It was akin to saying that you can tell someone is guilty by just looking at them.
If we based all of our opinions on info from breaking news stories, I think we’d all be in a lot of trouble and very misinformed.
Also, please provide me with the brand and model of the flashlight that induces vomiting. I can’t wait to get my hands on the Surefire Barf-Lite 9000. Roadside stops just got a whole lot more interesting.

It seems with all of these cases coming out recently that there is a problem. I believe that it is a symptom of the militarization of our police forces. If there were more vocalization of concern or outrage when these things occure from with in the ranks it would probably help public perception.
Something is wrong when the cop that was being cornered didn’t feel threatened enough to shoot, but his partner did. The one being cornered is in a better position to see if what the man was holding posed a serious threat.
What a member of my organization may have done something wrong? We will investigate the matter with our impartiality. What’s that? No we have no incentive to find no wrong doing in the matter? Why would we want to avoid possible law suits?

Maybe cornered cop didn’t realize the gravity of the situation given his position. Maybe cornered cop couldn’t draw his weapon because he was fighting with the subject. So many unknowns, but too few conclusions…
I don’t have a problem with transparency. It’s when ordinary people watch movies and think they have an understanding of how cops should deal with life and death situations. There was an incident which resulted in the death of a civilian. There is an ongoing process to determine what happened, and the results of that process will reveal if the cop screwed up.
Do you think police are guilty until proven otherwise?

Yea, well for a while there were a lot of cases coming out about a face-eating zombie epidemic. What happened to that? It wasn’t sexy anymore. The media will report (in a fallacious manner from my experience) what they want to. Has it occurred to you that maybe society is becoming more violent and police/subject interactions have been increased because of this? More police interaction with violent people will also increase the total number of “bad shoots”. See if your local law enforcement service will let you do a ride along. Go for the night shift in a big city just after the first and 15th of the month to see what kind of shit goes on. It’ll also give you a chance to interact with the police in a different way. Ask to go with a patrol Sgt if you can.
*Just noticed you weren’t in North America, so I’m not sure if this applies to you.

Depends on the police force.
American police?
Yes.
By that logic, I could determine guilt before gathering facts of people based on their race, ethnicity, or associations.

If it had some merit, yes you could.
For example if a young black man is killed in the US it most likely was another young black man.
90% or so.
Makes total sense and to refuse to learn from experience and data means rejecting reality.

With laws being passed prohibiting filming of cops and such, it’s becoming my default stance.

Yea, that’s stupid. My cruiser is equipped with five cameras and I wear a microphone pack so even if I go outside of camera view, everything is audio recorded. It’s more likely to save my ass than bury it.
I don’t like it when some idiot has a camera phone out, though. Things are taken out of context and it gets edited. I don’t want to be on Youtube for doing my job, even if I did it right.

You can say that for every profession.
Yea, but I don’t think firefighters or doctors get the stink eye from people while grocery shopping with their family. A lot of people don’t like cops. I don’t want people knowing I’m a cop on my downtime. That’s why I live outside of the area I police.

Part of the game.
Little brother is watching you too.
And that is a good thing, because you are issued a badge, a gun and a limitless amount of people who will excuse your actions even if you piss on an orphan.
