Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

He’s gained 8 pounds in 20 months.

You do the math.

I hope I’m wrong, I promise.

Just caught up in the other log. I was beginning to get skeptical (and disappointed) a few days ago at the procrastinating.

The strange part is that the advice is sound. I also can’t imagine taking the time to record fictional workouts. I understand trolling in ac thread, but managing a log over the year would be elite level trolling.

5’6" makes for some short ranges of motion so it’s all still plausible.

There’s another guy around here who gives a lot of advice, refers to research, and supposedly has clients. Not one picture or video in years of posting. He’s encouraged me to do things I thought were impossible (like gaining 30 lbs and it being quality weight). I thought it was BS, eventually gave in and tried it, and proved myself right (I know, self fulfilling prophecy).

The guy knows his stuff, but there’s no proof of his product. Brad Schoenfeld is a huge mind in this field and he looks like a DYEL bro. It’s possible. But at least Brad shows himself.

It’s the internet - you can collect sound advice anywhere and pass it off as your own. The leverages are plausible, the lifts are possible, but it’s not been a “I don’t wanna post pictures”, it’s been “I’ll definitely post them soon”, for 2 years. I’m also interested to see what someone that jacked would look like, for pure bro purposes, so I’m very happy to be proven wrong. I’ll eat my words with no hesitation.

And if it is who I think it is (the guy who encouraged you to gain that weight), I’ve often thought he was full of shit and just regurgitating stuff he’d heard elsewhere and a couple times called him on it, but again, maybe I’ll be proven wrong. It would restore some faith in humanity if I was wrong, so that’s a plus!

If it hadn’t been for others encouraging me then I wouldn’t have done it (Mark & Sleeper). But the “possibilities” out of his mouth were absurd. I’ve checked his log at least twice hoping to find a photo or video, but no luck. Just another internet authority playing to his own ego. And for clarification, he’s a huge supporter of a guy who is known for his high intensity double rest/pause style of training.

Ah man, you’ve gone all cryptic again.

This isn’t a knock on you and your physique. We’re similarly built so I’m going to assume we have similar difficulties in terms of getting the results we want in the gym (bigger muscles).

Do you ever wonder if this type of suffering is worth it?

Squats and leg days aren’t fun and I look at my legs and wonder if I’m making any progress. I’m hoping to find a bare minimum leg approach. Back in 2012, I didn’t lift legs all summer/fall. I ran three days a week and the workouts were built to improve my 200m time. Some days were just tempos and drill work.

My legs didn’t lose a cm of size. The only negative thing I experienced was a decrease in my vertical. I started playing basketball in the late fall and could barely dunk when I was fresh. I did plyos for six weeks and no change. I started lifting legs again and two weeks later I was back to normal.

Every single time I do anything in the gym involving legs, I wonder this. But it’s less about not being huge - I don’t really care about that, I look sufficiently large, it’s just a pain in the ass to avoid lumbar and SI joint discomfort all the time. I’m almost done with gym leg days altogether besides leg press, leg extension and leg curls anyway, because it’s nearly triathlon season again! Running and biking will do what I want just fine. Big legs and quads are fuckin sweet, but I really don’t give a shit anymore, haha.

I’m right there with you! In my younger days I took pride in hammering my legs and back. Everyone trained the beach muscles - I wanted to be different. Well, here I am at 35 years of age wishing I had bigger beach muscles!

If you bike with any intensity (and I know you do) then your quads will be fine.

I’d be Perfectly okay with bikers legs and a jacked upper body, aka the very thing I used to look down on from my high horse haha

We’ve all been there

@EyeDentist had a post awhile back that really sobered me on the possibility of gaining muscle after 40 (or after 50 in my instance). Last night I watched a Meadows YT video on the topic that covered some of what he thinks are essential for it to work (good T, little previous training, extra protein, less volume/more intensity, quality calories …)

@unreal24278 figured I’d clarify here, since there’s really no point in further discussing things with that guy, but he’s described himself as being over 30% body fat. Combine that with the fact that people drastically underestimate their body fat percentage, then add on to it the diabetes, the prostate problems, the freezing legs, the low testosterone, EVERYTHING, that’s why Occam’s razor applies - the simplest explanation is often the best one. He’s talking about TRT strengthening bladder muscles and a million different self diagnoses instead of addressing the most obvious one. Every time somebody throws a shiny brand new diagnosis at him is one more reason he’ll have not to address that stuff. It sucks, but those symptoms he’s mentioned - the freezing legs, the burning feeling in his feet, the heart problems, etc. are all stuff that my dad mentioned. He died soon afterwards. If this guy is being truthful about all of the stuff going on with him, he doesn’t have long to live.

I really feel sorry for that guy. Read the thread. That teeth and stomach thing could just be simple hyperacidity/GERD. But no, definitely must be TRT related. Anyway, moving on.

Yeah he’s chimed in quite a bit on some of my stuff over in pharma. Always way too much info. Found myself taking his advice with a grain of salt right off the bat.

Yes, actually his freezing legs/pain in legs and whatnot may be a symptom of diabetic neuropathy.

I don’t want to be judgemental, but it is of my opinion that this individual continually finds excuses as to why he can’t be healthy. If he truly exercises rigorously 4-5x weekly, eats a superb diet, he SHOULD be healthier than he is, so something… whatever it is… is off here. Even with hypogonadism one can lose weight and maintain some muscle mass… look at natural bodybuilders prior to competition (literature on this one guy prepping, his TT fell to 197ng/dL or something like that)

The man is likely very overweight in terms of solely fat mass, visceral adipose tissue etc, of which is fueling many of his ailments… furthermore it’s likely he doesn’t have a lot of muscle mass, hence the term “skinny fat” and he may very well be far unhealthier in terms of overall fat mass due to this, as a weight of say 200-210 lbs consisting of very little lean mass and predominantly fat mass is perhaps more akin to someone who is morbidly obese. uncontrolled type 2 diabetics, an a1c of 8.8 percent isn’t safe or healthy at all in the long run. This person has been unhealthy for a while yet has been unable to correct the initial condition that is the probably culprit for the majority of his issues… and now medical pathology/new diagnoses are racking up… ever wonder why you rarely see people morbidly obese over 85… because they’re dead… obesity kills, its an epidemic… it’s seriously no joke
