Sorry if my log includes more dog pictures now, but this dog is my dude.
My brother got a golden doodle a while back. Incredibly sweet, friendly, and loving dog. However, she seemed really possessive of her food, which I understand is a common behavior for dogs. She would get upset if we even approached her treats while she ate them.
My brother fixed it by either touching her treat (cowhide and pig’s ear) or petting her as she ate. If she got upset at any point of this, up to actually taking the treat away, he’d tell her “no” firmly.
We also did a bunch of training so that she would only eat at our command.
She got it pretty quickly- her food comes from us and we can take it away at our pleasure.
Very well-behaved as far as food is concerned now. Now we need to win the battle of wills over who is really playing “fetch”…
Another good idea! The dog is not what I would call food aggressive, and won’t bite, but doesn’t like being bothered when he’s eating, but we just feed him in his crate.
There’s a few things we’re correcting that he clearly picked up in his old house - and we’re not upset, he’s a great dog - and he’s responding so well.
At dinner he was relentlessly begging, and we made him lie down across the room. He tried to get up twice but we just told him to lie back down and he stayed there for 45 minutes while we ate.
He’s a leash tugger, but not NEARLY as bad as the previous owners led us to believe. They used a prong collar, and I threw it in the trash and used his regular collar, which he was fine with, and kept him on a short leash and he walked by my heel with very little resistance for the whole time.
He was clearly never made to sit or stay before eating, so he does that now, and we’ll see what else comes up! But he’s a good dog, and besides the prong collar which I’m really not a fan of, they were sweet people.
It seems you have it under control, but as another option if needed, we have found great success with a “No Pull Harness”. When the dog pulls the harness sort of pulls their front legs under them, so that they are no longer able to keep pulling. Plus, no more choking dog when they do decide to pull!
Make sure not to buy a regular harness though or it will just encourage your dog to pull like a Husky!
Dogs are great, another full time responsibility, but they are great.
I never saw the doodle beg. Apparently my brother taught the doodle that begging will get you in trouble.
Now she either sits under the table and waits for us to finish or, if the food smells amazingly good (we assume), she will either ask to be let outside or will go off to a room where she can stare outside to the street. We think she’s actively avoiding the smell and trying to preoccupy herself.
I love this dog, and I hope to have a dog of my own in the future. I think they’re well worth the effort.
Your dog sounds really smart. Very good to understand those commands so quickly.
The doodle is a big puller- too excitable; too young, and we didn’t spend the time needed to train her correctly.
I think we got the same kind of no pull harness that littlesleeper mentioned. She is far better behaved now without active training. She’ll still try to chase a wind-blown leaf or get distracted by squirrels, but she no longer actively tries to go her own way.
Wow what’s this no pull harness? My dog pulls less with a collar and I just let her pull away with a harness. Would love to train her to not pull so that my other family members could walk her too
A little nerdy but…they’re really good for kids too, the reason being that it helps build up the immune system of the child as they grow up
I think a link to the dog harness should be ok?
Dog harness.
Looking back, my description may have been a little off. It doesn’t really pull his legs under, but tightens on his legs and tends to restrict movement to make pulling less comfortable.
This is the one we have which has worked great. Been using it for over 2 years now.
Oh I see. Well worth the 20 dollars for sure. The harness we have is just a regular harness. Thanks man!
Daycare has helped improve our entire family’s immune system. Unfortunately, everyone has to get sick first.
We just quit walking our dog because she’s such a puller. She’s only a 25 lb indoor dog so her exercise is limited to the back yard. She yanks on her harness. I didn’t know there was a different kind.
Try out the one littlesleeper mentioned. As he said, the dog effectively restricts its own movement when it tries to pull away.
I think the dog learns on its own that pulling is uncomfortable and stop doing it.
I personally think pets are good to have to show children that everything dies eventually.
My brother bought a pair of hamsters on the pretense of some science experiment back when we were kids.
They happened to be a male and female… two hamsters quickly grew to be close to 18 or so.
Didn’t see any of them kick the bucket cause we got rid of them before that happened. I did see the remains of a couple newborns. We think the mother ate them.
Nature is nasty. I don’t want to go back to be “one with nature”.
Based on your first line (which is a really good point btw), I did not expect where your whole reply ended up with. That ended up differently. Haha
Back to the gym today. ZERO desire to do any rest pause stuff, and it’s time to stop lying to myself and admit that though the low volume HIT stuff was efficient and effective, I was ignoring how my back and shoulders were starting to ache and tweak. I did a bunch of supersets today, felt strong, sweat a ton, and exhausted my muscles without anything feeling remotely painful.

Still really not that many sets for a full upper body workout, just very little rest time. Just felt so much better. Plus meshes better with my triathlon training.
12 sets of back and chest work plus six sets of direct shoulder work. I think that’s enough.
That’s if we’re counting the supersets as multiple sets, too - I wasn’t going to failure on many things and I’d say effort wise, it was 6 sets and 3 sets, just keeping my heart rate way higher.
I’m learning (always learning) that while fewer sets completed at a higher intensity might be “optimal”, it doesn’t mean that more sets done at a lower intensity is worse. I was starting to feel beat up with the HIT stuff so I’m backing off, too. I also kind of enjoy not dying on every set.
I gotta say, I love our training evolutions. Both of us have covered a lot of ground, training wise. I’m beginning to wonder if a hybrid program is best - one RP set, some supersets/giant sets, a bit of pump work, and a couple good old straight sets. Perfect is the enemy of good.
We could all live “perfectly” and look like the magazine covers, we just choose to do other things with our resources. Like have a job, and a family. They aren’t wrong choices.
