Yup, when we were dating and engaged, before the first pregnancy, we used to have a 1.5 foot Gandalf pipe that we could lie in bed together and smoke, haha. Obviously things are more discreet now, but both of us have seen the effects of alcohol and both of us were naturally anxious people and found relief through marijuana instead of benzodiazepines and SSRIs. Obviously weed effects everyone differently and some people should stay far away, but by and large it can be a therapeutic experience if done correctly and in reasonable moderation.
Would you take advantage of the new products if it was legalized in NJ? I couldn’t see myself smoking if I could eat something and get the same results. Although smoking seems to hit me almost immediately…from what I remember from 15 years ago.
I smoke the oil pens most of the time now. No smell, no burning plant material in the lungs, and way more cost effective.
The thing with edibles is, they ARE different from smoking/vaping. They take like an hour to hit, and sometimes when they do, you’ll be stuck-in-your-chair, stoned-to-death high for hours. One hit of a bowl, a couple puffs on a joint, a hit on the oil pen - they’re all sufficient and manageable. When I was in high school and college, edibles were sweet, because I didn’t have responsibility every hour of every day. Imagine if there was a one-shot drink that got you drunk immediately, all night. Sounds fun for kids, not people with shit to do, haha.
Without derailing the thread, in a short answer - as a member of law enforcement, do you generally agree or disagree with marijuana use?
@flappinit - I’ve only tried an edible once and it was much more intense for me than smoking (which I’ve only done a handful of times as well). I don’t seem to have much of a tolerance for either, but edibles definitely had me pretty good.
I’m not opposed to it being legal. It’s very difficult to work a DUI when someone has been smoking (or using any drug). With alcohol, it’s pretty easy. We have standardized and validated tests. That means if you fail the test then it’s probable cause for the arrest. Those same tests can be and are used for drug cases but it’s not as cut and dry. My favorite part of alcohol is that we’ve figured out how to test for it. If you’re over the limit then you’re done.
With anything else, we ask for blood. If people consent then we send it off to the lab and wait a couple months. After that, a doctor has to declare that the amount of drugs in your system was enough to impair your ability to drive a car. Our policy let’s you go home so you don’t even spend the night in jail.
I still enforce our laws, but I don’t think weed is that bad. I just worry about stoned drivers if/when we legalize it.
Cool, I was just curious.
Overall I’d say if I was in your shoes I’d much rather deal with a stoned dude than a drunk dude. That’s pretty much how I view the entire subject - doesn’t seem as bad as the affects of alcohol could be/are.
You are mostly correct. I don’t know if it’s because it’s already illegal or if it’s truly the gateway drug, but for some people the weed isn’t enough. They start dipping their joint in embalming fluid and smoking “wet”. It can also be laced with PCP. Both of those make people absolutely crazy and super strong. Those people suck.
Well, we’re getting a dog. I’ve been wanting one for a while (my whole life, but especially recently) since my boys have started being really interested in other people’s dogs and especially with the surge in outdoor activities we’ve been doing. I looked around all the animal shelters in Richmond, and I would take a lot of them, especially the old ones, but it’s a lot for a child to get them a best friend who’s gonna die in a year or two. I would also love to rescue ex-bait dogs and rehab them, but I have kids and I can’t risk bites or worse.
On one of the shelters, they have courtesy ads for people looking to rehome a dog. I contacted a lady with a medium sized, 3-year old dog that her and her husband want to send to a home that can get him more exercise. They fostered him as a puppy and ended up keeping him for 3 years, but they have an older dog who’s getting grumpier and starting to get fed up with him.
We met him yesterday, he’s super handsome, and has a WONDERFUL temperament. He crawled right into my lap and licked my face and I kind of fell in love with him, haha. Totally sweet, fun, and energetic enough for my crazy boys. Gonna pick him up after my race on Saturday.
Good luck!
We just rescued two pit puppies (~12 weeks) for the same reason and it has gone great: my kids are super happy; their dad is exhausted
Good stuff mate, dogs are awesome for the family and for kids especially. Our dog is def part of the family, he just loves being with us.
Does anyone else hate this?
On the other hand, congrats.
I don’t, but I also find it gross when people deliberately let their dogs slobber all over their faces. But a friendly face lick, eh - it’s just in their nature.
Congrats on rescuing the pooch! I think having kids growing up with pets is important (or at least exposure to them). A few of my friends grew up without pets who who now don’t like or are nervous around cats and/or dogs. I give them a hard time about it.
Haha, yeah. My dog LOVES licking people’s faces. I do not like it or let him do it, but once in awhile right before I shower I’ll let the little bugger go to town. Grosses me out, but I’m a sucker for that cute face if his!
I trust when a dog dislikes a person, I don’t trust people that dislike dogs (as a general thing)
Agreed! I’ve had exceptions, of course, but especially as a former vet tech I put a lot of stock into animal intuition.
That’s awesome, I love pitties. Total sweethearts. With my kids as crazy as they are, we decided against a puppy and looked for adult dogs. He’s already crate trained and house trained, can handle kids roughhousing him, etc. win-win for everyone.
Did an upper body workout yesterday, and did abs and a 3600 meter row at a medium pace today. Keeping calories fairly low and getting ready for the race. Tomorrow is a swim. Going to do 400m for time, then some drills, then 500m or more.
Is the new dog a mix breed? I love those breed-ambiguous dogs, make the best pets.
They’re theoretically healthier too compared to pure breds
Yup! He’s part Australian Cattle Dog, and probably 5 other things, lol - perhaps even a little pitty. They are absolutely great dogs, and like @whang says, have a greater genetic pool to pull from and as such generally have lower rates of cancer and disease than many pure breds.
