Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

I’m guessing it might just be you’re a crazy motherfucker that shares a training log with equally crazy motherfuckers. But I could be wrong, and there’s therefore nothing wrong with you.

Who are you calling crazy?

Yup. Embrace the crazy!

Another long day at work. Couldn’t get a bearing off a giant cylinder, had to use a 3” wide piece of brass to beat the bearing off, so my grip was so dead after work. Wife picked me up with the kids, I dozed off on the half hour ride home. Came in, lay on the couch, and was about to pass out, thinking I’ll go tomorrow and make it up. Then, on impulse, sat up, hobbled into the kitchen, slugged cold coffee, got in the car, and went to the gym for day 4.

Started with calf raises, 4 max sets with 5 second eccentrics, just 100 lbs. 19, 17, 12, 8 reps.

10K KB Swing: Week 1, Workout 4

Time: 33 minutes (PR)
50 lb KB

Cluster 1:
10 swings 1 goblet squat
15 swings 2 goblet squats
25 swings 3 goblet squats
50 swings rest

Cluster 2:
10 swings 1 goblet squat
15 swings 2 goblet squats
25 swings 3 goblet squats
50 swings rest

Cluster 3:
10 swings 1 goblet squat
15 swings 2 goblet squats
25 swings 3 goblet squats
50 swings rest

Cluster 4:
10 swings 1 goblet squat
15 swings 2 goblet squats
25 swings 3 goblet squats
50 swings rest

At this point, I’m at 29 minutes. I say fuck water and dive in.

Cluster 5:
10 swings 1 goblet squat
15 swings 2 goblet squats
25 swings 3 goblet squats
Now I’m at 31 minutes. No stopping. Dive into the 50.
30 swings, grip gives out. Shake out hands, pick up kettlebell, 20 swings. 2 minute PR. Fall on the ground covered in sweat and lie there for 5 minutes.

From 48 to 33 minutes in 4 days. I’m shooting for a sub-20 time by the end!

It looks like your technique really clicked in workout 3 and now you’re crushing those 50 rep sets. Nice work!

Are there any rest days?

Yes, two rest days. I was gonna do 1 rest day and go to week 2 because I started on a Tuesday, but I’m gonna give myself the rest I need. One tweak is all it will take to stop me in my tracks.

Honestly I think my technique clicked by day 2- 1000 reps is enough to get your form down pretty quickly, what really made me get through it in workout 3 was that I kept thinking as I dropped the KB and rest-paused the 50, “dude, you could have done more”. It was pure mental toughness. Just finishing this challenge is no longer my goal. It’s finishing it and ANNIHILATING my times from week 1.

@dagill2 @mr.v3lv3t @wanna_be I really appreciate all the support, guys. I had to run into work for a couple hours, and sliced open my damn finger on a piece of copper, so I taped it up and now I’m home taking a post-coffee/pre-workout dump. My kettlebell came in the mail! The handle is a bit thicker and doesn’t have as much room for both my hands, so this will be a bit more difficult. This is the day with no exercises, just swings. My grip is so fried I’m not expecting to beat my time from yesterday, but it’s only week 1 and then I get 2 glorious rest days before starting over on Tuesday.

Underestimated myself.

Total swings: 2500!

The quicker I go, the harder it is to do those 50 rep sets without dropping the bell and shaking my hands a bit.

I am drenched. Week 1 down. 2 days rest. 3 weeks to go, 7 minutes to shave off for my goal.

Freaking animal!

Pretty happy with week 1. From 48-26 minutes. Nearly sliced my time in half, knocked 22 minutes off. If my grip gets stronger (it can’t possibly not get stronger), I can keep shaving minutes off. But I barely rested as is - 26 minutes is 1560 seconds. That’s about a swing every 3 seconds as is. 19 minutes is 1140 seconds, I’ll have just over 2 seconds per Swing. A swing takes less than a second when you’re not stopping, but every time you stop it takes a few seconds to shake your hands out, pick it up, set your legs, and dip into a swing. It’s gonna be tough. Week 4, day 1 will be my no-strength exercise day to test time. I’ll record the whole session.

better order the 80lber for week 3.

My gym has up to 70 lbs, it’d be cool to do Week 3 with the 70 lb KB and then test reps two days later with the 50.

Just think of the spare time you’ll have :mantelpiece_clock:

Make sure you’re rolling your hamstrings and glutes. They need care when they are getting treated like this!

I ran Pavel’s Simple and Sinister last year and passed with my 80lber, but didnt take care of my posterior properly. Things start getting really tight from all the reps, and they need that care to loosen everything up to keep gliding surfaces free. I ended up hurt because my groin/hips locked up. Take care of the machine!

Might even be worth getting a hot Asian chick to use her magic fingers. Maybe bring the wife from what I’ve read :joy:

I appreciate you dropping in. The simple and sinister challenge is 10x10 one handed swings (5 sets per arm) followed by 10 get ups EMOM? That’s brutal, and with an 80 no less! Thanks for the advice, I’ll be rolling out my hams, groin, glutes and hip flexors tonight. I’ve been so concerned with my grip it’s all I’ve been focused on - dipped my hands into ice water for a while earlier. Strangely enough, day 1 my back and hips were tight - tight to the point that it started hurting around rep 300 and I was like “here we go, this is gonna stop me”, and then today I have literally no back or hip discomfort, it’s just all my hands and forearms. But my back and hips are taking the brunt of the force regardless, so I can’t forget that and neglect them. Still got 7500 chances to fuck them up! Thanks again, dude.

Also, sick back brah!

So, I just re-read the 10K KB article, and…I’m not supposed to be doing 5 workouts in a row. It’s 2 on, 1 off, 2 on, and then you can either take 2 days off and make it a full week cycle, or take 1 day off and make it a 6-day week. That sets you to finish it either in 29 days or in 34. I’m on pace to finish it in 26. I’m an idiot for going 2.5x longer than the longest recommended consecutive workdays, but part of me wants to finish it this way. What should I do? This really was totally unintentional.
