Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

I agree. However I’d argue most lifters aren’t athletes and don’t train like them.

Well I think most lifters are athletes. But maybe I agree that self loathing is necessary to initiate the process of change.

Sustained change is easier, I think, to maintain if you can find a positive source of motivation.

Anyway, it is great to think about these concepts. Getting the mind right really matters.

Lest this become a “definition of terms”-battle as to what constitutes an athlete I’ll supply this consideration:

If a person sustains beyond the novice phase, where the excitement of being at their personal best happens every time they step into the weight room and persists through the long, repetitive, drawn out and seemingly unrewarding stints between the occasional excitement of a personal best is in my view an “athlete”.

A person that sees themselves through the “plateaus”, the injuries, the setbacks of circumstance and continues to forge ahead despite being beaten, set back, frustrated, and drives themselves to endure being knackered from hard effort, is an athlete.

Hell, I wonder if such a person doesn’t just love that shit. I can’t help but think of this article,

I love being better than I’ve ever been, of course, but as we’ve discussed in @aldebaran s log: it’s better to be value-driven than result-driven. Results are transient, but I can always derive pleasure from that I persevere. Rebuilding a lift after injury feels monotonous and painful. It’s like expending a long uninterrupted grinding effort just to get back to a place already visited. And yet, it gets done.

And the people that do do that, or would do that, they’re athletes. And the people that make due with change of circumstance and still try to fight tooth and nail to maintain what they’ve accrued or try to push the needle further while potentially sacrificing other things in life to do so: athletes.

You must be willing to sacrifice to the same level you want to achieve

My 2 cents.

However, @dagill2, please expand on your view:

Didn’t log any of my workouts this week. Nothing special. Yesterday was squats, and I was super crunched for time and forgot to check what my weights should be, so I just did 5’s at 200, 220, and 240, and then 200x20, followed by leg press 3x15 at 440, 400, and 360

Hit a quick OHP workout. Big test in A&P today - all processes of bone growth and remodeling, gotta be able to label aspects of all parts of axial and appendicular skeleton, and all joints/levers/movements.

Just took a 45 min break after 3 hours of study- 135x5, 155x5 and 165x5 all superset with 10 pull-ups, then hit incline DBs, 85s for 3x10 superset with heavy close grip cable pulldowns for 3x10 as well. Hit some lateral Raises and got outta there.

Haha, thanks dude. My fitness is definitely taking a hit while school ramps up, but I’m happy I’m still getting there 4x/week and keeping active with the kids.

It’s a tough gig with just the kids @flappinit mate

Throw school in there and holy shit. I don’t know how you do it man.

^ that helps.

On a more serious note, my current company gives me frequent reminders that they are not invested in my future and will not provide a stable environment for me to retire from. So, partly out of initiative and partly out of fear, I don’t wanna be the 40 year old guy with a ton of experience in a dying field trying to start over and going broke in the meantime.

Yesterday, only had a 45 min break to do another workout quickly, so just did deadlifts 330 for 5x10 giant set with pullups 5x10 and pushups 5x20. Took my kid on a 4 mile walk in the evening with the dog. Just got off work and have more schoolwork to do by midnight but work was miserable so I’m gonna go grab a workout quickly and clear my mind. Trying to get back on program, haven’t completed a full day in more than a week but have still deadlifted/pressed/squatted/benched during the week so it’s fine.

Going on a bit more of a fish kick as I look to lean out.

@T3hPwnisher check out the macros for canned mackerel - been reading up on it and got a few cans today. Bit heavy on the sodium of course, but otherwise it’s awesome:

Canned fish is baller dude. Good stuff. Assuming wild caught, you even got some solid saturated fats in there.

Yup. Gonna make some salads with it for sure.

Tin of tuna in a curry pot noodle, 3 mins for 550 cals, 65g carb 30g protein, cheap as well.

I love canned fish. I was looking at the nutrition label for the tinned sardines I eat for breakfast and realized that the tin had more omega-3s than a serving of fish oil

Birthday was yesterday - came home from work to find the wife and kids had made a happy birthday mural with sidewalk chalk outside the house, had all drawn cards for me, wife got me a couple articles of clothing and new grill tools, and kids asked me to skip the gym and watch a movie with them, which I was more than happy to do. My mom is visiting from NY today too, and she’s the best kind of grandma - wants to take the kids and let my wife and I have a night out, wants to be up first thing and let us sleep in, etc. but we usually don’t sleep in or go out, because she’s also a blast to just hang out with, so no matter what it’s a good time, and my wife and her are super close.
