Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

I have a barbell I found on amazon for like 150, the only thing about that dicks set is that the bar capacity is only 300 lbs, and my most recent deadlift set before I started this program was 315x10. So even at 300 lbs I’d know the bar could be fucked.

Touché. I didn’t even look at that

Making a mental note of this

You probs know this already but if I were in your place I would invest in a good mid to high end bar and save up on everything else. A good bar is a really good investment and I think you’ll thank yourself in the long term

I would LOVE to, but between recent house repairs and the possibility of work shutting down, can’t really spare the funds for that right now. I think you’re absolutely right though.

I bought the Dick’s starter set and I bent the bar pretty quickly. They swapped it out under warranty but I learned my lesson - don’t do clean pulls with it.

I can’t speak for the Dick’s bar, but I bought an Academy Sports set years ago and have pulled 500 on it multiple times. The collars and bearings are busted, but the bar is barely bent. I wouldn’t buy one for the bar, but if you have one around or someone doesn’t want it, I’d try it out. For the weight, they tend to go on sale for 150-180 and it’s not that bad for new weights.

Shit, academy sports was selling a 300 lb +barbell weight set for $200 but you can’t order it online (no stores near me) and amazon is selling the same set for $450. People are starting to jack up their prices big time.

Has your gym been shut down or are you just preparing for that?

Sorry, just didn’t notice if you’d mentioned or not.

I was preparing, but the governor of VA mandated today that there are to be no more than 10 people in any fitness center, and when I called my gym an hour ago they said the owner hadn’t given them word yet but that the new law is supposedly they can only let 10 people in at a time. Silly, haha, just shut it down. But anyway I’m fucked and have to pull the trigger now. So upset about this, was really enjoying myself on this.

Some scary shit lol

Hahah I’m torn right now. My wife is not exactly on board with this purchase because of what we could potentially need in terms of supplies and all that. I’m gonna talk to her tomorrow. Worst case, I have a pair of 15 lb DBs, an ab wheel, a resistance band, a jump rope, and push-up bars. I could make things very nasty with all of those, but I would MUCH prefer a cheap barbell + 350-400# of weights AND those things for assistance.

100%.

If in doubt, grab an axle off Titan fitness instead. $47 shipped and should hold the load without flex. Use straps for the deadlift. They sell cheap barbells too.

Or you can take a length of rolled steel and use duct tape to make collars. That was my first axle.

Otherwise, I usually get stuff off facebook market, which goes against the whole “social distancing” thing.

Yeah, 50 bucks for an axle. It’s 60” and unrackable but would be fine for everything except squatting.

For $15 more you can get an 84".

On back order, ships 4/3. Totally worth it though, I’m just considering a few different options and will likely pull the trigger tomorrow.

bbstand

This is selling on the FB marketplace. About $200 for a 1000lb capacity (yeah fuckin right, but will be good for me) BB and a pair of adjustable stands. All i’d need after that would be a flat bench, which I can find easily, and then weights, which I can scavenge for.

Late meal: half pound burger, six scrambled eggs, and cabbage, carrots, and potatoes from my wife’s corned beef & cabbage, which I honestly am not a huge fan of (not my wife’s in particular, just as a meal in general, not crazy about it). Lots of research on BB’s tonight. Have a few options, will figure out the final package tomorrow.

I was tempted by the Dick’s 300 lb set. If I had any confidence that we were sticking around in our house for any duration, I might have pulled the trigger. But since the current COVID crisis seems to only have accelerated our plans to downsize in the next 3-5 years (i.e., goodbye house, hello apartment), I ended up picking up a pair of 45 lb DBs tonight instead.
