Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

I just want to go on record saying that the correct squat depth is that which you can do with good form.

Agreed - I think my arched-back hole position was causing ANY amount of depth to be achieved, meaning it was technique and not improper structure causing pain. If I can fix any of this and end up a bit over parallel pain-free, that’s where I’ll stay.

Good discussion on squatting.

I’ve come to find out that wide(ish) stance and depth a little high is best for me too. Helps keep lumbar neutral and less need on the impossible ankle dorsiflexion needs of a breaking parallel narrow(ish) stance squat.

I think you’re onto something!!!

Looking forward to seeing you run btm.

I’m gonna start monday. Today is going to be a light squat day where I work with 135 for a good half hour or more and just fix my bracing and arching issues. Did a bunch of 90/90 drills last night to familiarize myself with that neutral position, found a good foot width.

Welp, didn’t have much time and it didn’t go so well, haha. I really only felt comfortable doing 225x5. Wasn’t super heavy, if I’d wanted I could have gotten 10. 225 is gonna be my TM, which is just…embarassingly light, and really disappointing, but after pretty much avoiding squatting for a really long time, I’m just gonna suck up the ego and not be a douchebag about this. Did some benching too, just worked up to 225x2 and didn’t hit failure.

Bench TM: 195
Squat TM: 225
Deadlift TM: 275
Press TM: 135

Ugh. I shouldn’t give a shit, but those are such pathetic TM’s right now. Bench felt like a foreign language. Have to trust the process, eat the food, hit the numbers. 6 weeks isn’t shit, just a stepping stone. Deadlift is the only one of these lifts I’m remotely practiced at at this point, and even that’s new again. In a world where I could use incline bench, leg press, deadlifts, and seated BB presses, I’d probably do that, but I’m getting sick of running from my weaknesses, and I’m just going to attack them. I’m comfortable with my size to take a break from hypertrophy work and get some brute strength for a bit.

That’s a shame man. Its not for everyone, I figured out I need to deload more often or switch to some straight sets with a different progression model on certain exercise for a few weeks before reverting back to the failure sets.

I think it’d be good for a block of time each year for sure - it’s obviously effective from hypertrophy and I saw the results, but I stopped enjoying it pretty quickly, even with switching some stuff up. I’m actually kind of dreading running BTM but as I said, it’s more of getting me out of my comfort zone for a while, especially in preparation for triathlon season, which has me doing my first race in may.

This is massive, doing something you don’t enjoy from time to time Is great, but at the end of the day you will get much more out of finding an effective middle ground between doing something that you look forward to but still gets results you want.

I’m an extremely unstructured person, 5/3/1 was a complete miss match for my personality, I don’t doubt for 1 minute its effective though.

Remember you add five pounds every four weeks dude (right?). Shit adds up QUICK.

Yeah, I’m actually taking Jim’s advice and starting too light, which seems obvious when I type it out but is difficult for me in practice, haha.

My 6-month old asics have been making my feet hurt more and more, which sucks because my first pair of ASICS was great but they discontinued that model. Anyhoo, I went to a proper running shoe store, stepped on a machine and got a 3D model made of my foot, walked around barefoot and all that jazz until we landed on a pair of Mizunos that fit my long but very narrow feet (I’m also very flat footed with low insteps), and went for a few miles with Alfie afterwards. Then came back and played laser tag with the kids (we have our own laser guns), all in all a pretty active day.

Rebuilding my fence tomorrow and running some more wire to my dining room so we can get a proper light above the table, will probably take the day off. BTM starts Monday anyways.

How are the Mizunos? I have flat feet and finally found my shoe a few years ago - the Brooks Beast.

I had Mizunos in college but they didn’t fit me well.

They feel amazing. My feet have some protests since my arch is actually being corrected but my knees feel great and the shoes are super light and hold my heel really well. Apparently my feet are super narrow and Mizunos make narrow shoes.

Woah woah woah woah woah, dude. I wouldn’t make any assumptions here until we’ve gotten the results of your neurotype test back. We have no idea what we’re dealing with here.

Nah I didnt finish it. The first question was “what squat do you most enjoy?”

I ripped the Fucker up and walked out.

What madman enjoys squats?

You do, by most indications.

I’ve never considered myself a model of sanity.

I would squat over deadlift any day.

I actually find myself agreeing these days, which is a weird experience.
