Dodgin’ Dadbods: Fortitude Training

Hit back today.

Halfway through my workout, some girl who I’ve seen there for years who’s just shredded and pretty damn jacked and strong too, came up to me and took her earphones out, and was like “hey, I’ve seen you and your wife here for a long time, and I haven’t seen you guys in a while, and I just wanted to come up to you and say your upper body is looking awesome! You’re putting in hard work here!” I was flattered and complimented her as well, and had a fuckin sweet workout after that, because vain as it sounds, I do put in the work to look good and it’s been a bitch getting here, so might as well celebrate the affirmations.

Cable Rows superset with Dante rows
17x8 drop to Dante 9x8
16x9 drop to Dante 8x10

Post workout cardio: tag in the playground with my kids for like an hour. Was sucking gas afterwards because they’re honestly pretty tricky at this point, I have to parkour my way up and around all the obstacles to keep away from them and they just don’t stop running.

100%. Had something similar happen to me at the gym for the first time last week. Boost for days.

Seriously. My wife asked me how my workout went and I told her and she got a bit jealous, but I explained that the girl was much more bro-fist-bumping me than hitting on me. I think. I’ll be honest, her boyfriend is pretty puny, and ginger, and about the same size as her (both like 5’6, she’s probably 120 lean and he’s like 140, not particularly lean), and was staring with a kind of pissed off look across the gym while I fist bumped his girl and shared a broment with her, so it’s possible there was a tinge of flirtation in there but it just didn’t feel that way.

My gym really is great that way though, you can ask any of the big guys a question or for a spot or to work in, and people will just randomly comment on your progress. All good vibes for the most part. We definitely have some posers and the like, but I haven’t seen any aggression directed at anything other than iron.

Meal prep This week: just regular eggs cracked into the muffin pan, made 24 of them today- the scrambled version is alright and fluffy but the creamy yolks really beat it.

Thai lentil curry with greens and chicken: added like 4 lbs of chicken this time, along with the 2+ cups of lentils and a large package of kale/chard/spinach, the only debatably heavy thing in there is coconut milk, which isn’t bad at all. This is great with any type of rice and lasts the whole week.

Teriyaki turkey meatballs. I put a TON of baby carrots and a full onion through a food processor til it was finely chopped and mixed it all in with 3 lbs of ground turkey and some teriyaki sauce, and fashioned it into a bunch of large meatballs. Seared them very quickly in sesame oil and a splash of soy sauce then put them in the slow cooker with the remainder of the teriyaki sauce and let them simmer all day.

With the turkey meatballs is another old staple and one I could definitely add to the list @jshaving - brown fried rice. I use microwaved packages of brown fried rice (you submerge a package of brown fried rice in water and microwave for 10 minutes). I start sautéing an onion til it’s soft in oil (sesame preferably), then push the onions to the outside of the pan leaving a clear area in the middle. Crack a few eggs into the pan and whisk them with a fork as they cook to scramble them. Once they’re cooked throughout I mix them in with the onions, then add a bunch of frozen peas, a bit more oil, soy sauce, and then add the brown rice in and cook for a couple minutes stirring constantly. Boom - brown fried rice with eggs and peas, and you can add chopped meat or whatever. With these teriyaki turkey meatballs it’ll be a treat.

Sounds good dude.

Tried a recipe I found online yesterday - cooked some ground turkey, put a dressing with hoysin sauce, sesame oil, sriracha, etc. on it, then added in some rice, a bag of broccoli slaw, chopped green onions, chopped ginger and some carrots to it.

Really liked it - will probably make a larger batch of it tomorrow or Tuesday, have that be my lunch & dinner for most of the week. I really don’t mind eating the same thing repeatedly, as long as I enjoy it. I’ll definitely be giving some of your stuff a shot in the near future.

Didn’t detail it a whole lot in my log, but I hired a nutrionist for my mom as a Christmas gift, and to be supportive/actually do something healthy for myself, I started the diet with her. Lost 10lbs in a little over a week but it was mostly dry, plain meat, rice and veggies and I (we) hated it. So I’m really trying to improve my skills in the kitchen, because as you mentioned somewhere not too long ago, I can’t eat like that every day!

I just wanted to say that I made this recipe and it was fantastic. Only minor modifications were that I added some bok choy and mushrooms, and cheated by using one of those packets of Old El Paso chili seasonings. Oh, and it was all just tossed in a Croc Pot after browning/draining the beef first.

Spices aren’t cheating! No matter what you use. Can’t go wrong with a seasoning packet. And whatever extra veggies are always good, I bet the mushrooms were sweet.

Super glad to hear it dude. Such an easy recipe, will last you a few days and tastes better every time you reheat it.

If you have some left over at the end, making some over easy eggs and having eggs and chili for breakfast is the shit too.

This story serves as a solid example of an instance wherein, traditionally, the verb is “bro-fist”, but it works poorly when used in the past or present progressive tense.

But a hearty congrats none-the-less.

And I wanted to share lamentation over a trainee that was following Building the Monolith entirely, except for the diet and the conditioning.

So you went up to the guy and told him some girl at the gym said your upper body was looking awesome?!?..dude that’s just weird.

This reminds me of one of my funniest childhood experiences. In 8th grade our teacher had us going through the past-future-present conjugation of verbs. She gave my best friend the word come. That was a big time mistake for keeping the classroom under control.

The post was retyped a feel times to avoid that, for sure.

And don’t be silly, 5/3/1 has no conditioning aspect to any of its templates, it’s just daily maxes, pizza, and flippin the bird to anyone who tells you otherwise.

Amen. Doing the 10 rep sets at the end is all the cardio I could ever want.

He ok? When ours was around three he was jumping on his grandma’s bed and fell mouth first into a bedpost. Knocked out one tooth, pushed the other completey into his gum. Had to get put under to have it pulled out. Within 24 hours he was back to his normal self.

He was fine, just a bloody nose. He also chipped a tooth a while back and every time he faceplants he cuts his lip. The daycare girl was pale as a ghost when she came to tell me, I think she thought I’d be angry but I’m so jaded about physical bumps and cuts - some blood ain’t no biggie to me anymore. He wasn’t even crying when I got there.

Their bodies also have superhuman healing abilities. It’s a mindfuck because you hate to see them in pain but they literally get right back on it like it never happened.
