Hence the reason I said we are getting off topic. But, are you legit all there man? I mean YOU diverted the initial topic and now are acting like ‘who me?’.
I did and you really think 5M (actually 4.8M to ALL CANDIDATES but significantly less to Desantis) is a big donation from a company like Disney? Wow, further proof you have no business speaking to such things as development or even politics.
Disney donated some $4.8 million to Florida candidates in the 2020 election cycle, campaign finance reports show. Disney during the 2020 election cycle donated $913,000 to the Republican Party of Florida and another $586,000 to GOP Senate campaigns, records show. The company also donated $313,000 to the Florida Democratic Party and $50,000 directly to DeSantis.
Corporations want to increase earnings and politicians want to get elected. There will always be someone trying to persuade you to their way of thinking.
I don’t know what to say to that except people often talk past each other and get super defensive when matters of personal identity are at stake.
Just checked and Desantis raised over 67M in 2021 alone. Your ‘gotcha’ moment is that the 100k from Disney donations is substantial. Thats the total he’s received from Disney. This is hilarious.
My initial foray into this thread was a response to your question about Disney’s special district status. Then we discussed special districts in general for context. It’s a discussion forum.. that’s the course a discussion takes. Why are you getting all bent out of shape?
Do you have any idea how little money it takes to buy influence with a politician? A few thousand dollars buys access. Almost a million to a state political party buys some level of influence.
They factually contributed 100k to Desantis. I calrifed that above. So you’re basically guilty of this below in your own words. Which is why having dialogue with you is pointless.
Looks like Disney pays for not more than 2.17% of DeSantis’ fiances. And that’s if we wanted to count ALL of Disney’s political contributions, not the 100k they’ve admitted to.
You’re still saying this? Do you actually believe the representation of gay characters in Disney films is disproportionate to society at large?
I don’t think anyone in this thread has argued that 20%+ of Disney characters should be gay. But you posted a list of, I think, 17 that MIGHT be gay. Less than 10 definitely were. Out of the thousands of characters Disney has created over the years. Just saying. Even if we limit the content to, say, the last 10 years, you’re still not seeing over representation. It’s still very low.
Do you take any issue with ‘proportionate’ representation?
that is so wild to me that people have a problem with it. Le Fou is the FIRST definitively gay character in ANY Disney movie. And only in the live action version, he was not gay in the animated one. It’s pretty crazy to me that people would have a problem with Disney introducing a gay character into their films for the first time in their 100 year history.
Well, if you feel strongly that the gay community should be represented in film at a rate that is under the percentage in the general population, it can probably be assumed that you feel they are undeserving of representation in some way. Meaning, lesser. I’m not saying YOU have necessarily expressed that view point, but many in this thread have. Basically anyone who has said that there is too much representation in Disney productions, given that Disney hasn’t come close to representing the gay community at a rate comparable to the general population.
Wow, not even close. Saying a discussion about Disney’s political contributions is related to the thread topics is not the same as saying that, “100k make[s] a difference to Desantis”.
We’re all guilty of this at times, but I think you just misread a post or two.
Read up a bit more, I was paraphrasing how the conversation between @blshaw and @Californiagrown went down.
I think they ought to be represented as normal people tbh. I don’t think a claim to fame should be an inalienable trait, and I don’t think that should be the entirety of their character if they are going to be represented.
Like I’m straight but that’s not out of the norm so that would never get any attention. But what if I was REALLY straight… Still nothing? Right. But if I were REALLY gay, that could be the entirety of my character in a movie and I’d be lauded throughout history for it.
This is the problem I have with it. Moreover is the problem I have with the narrative people whip up when pointing this out. Obviously I must be a terrible person.
That’s a shitload of money. I’m sure DeSantis is sad to see it go.
But you guys do realize DeSantis isn’t the only person in the state of Florida with influence over Disney’s fortunes, right? There are local and state officials involved, and it’s lot easier to move the needles for those guys. Hence my comment about a few thousand buying access.
I thought they kinda did this with the Luca movie? They were gay, but it wasn’t a big part of the story line. Kinda made it like, I am pretty sure they are gay, but there isn’t anything definitive.
