UGH! That grinding sounds horrid! I’m so sorry MiMsy!! So you can’t squat, but can you do other things like:
Step ups - front or lateral
Lunges - reverse (and side, maybe)
Bulgarian split squat
Pistols (or step downs)
Leg press
Box squats - take the load off the knees, altho that’s more a glute/ham exercise.
Trap bar - doesn’t put so much pressure on the knees, and that’s technically a squat variation (I think).
You can def push/pull/drag shit around, like you said. And that is AWESOME!
And I’m definitely a fan of the heavy resistance bike work - that will beef up your quads right quick!
I’m actually going to take an “aquarobics” class Thursday night. LOL!! I can’t imagine it being too challenging, but just to get something fun into the mix. I swam last week and that didn’t bother my knee at all, so of course you could do that…
I don’t know MiMsy, just tossing out some ideas. lol! I think you’ll definitely find a way to make this work! I’m currently rocking the 10 day split (so i give the knee rest, I fear patella tendinitis) and that might be a way to keep things interesting and not kill the knees (its basically a four day split but I alternate lifting with a complex/cardio).
ps. I promise to stop commenting with the knees already!! MUAH!

m-i-M, have you ever tried trap bar deads for quads? The motor pattern is more squat than deadlift, but you stand more upright than normal squats and can pretty much take the eccentric out of the movement. I’ve done em in the past and they were easier on my knees than squats.[/quote]

step ups- nope, I can barely walk up my own stairs
Lunges- the worst
bulgarians, pistols…hahahahaha. NO.
Leg press- tolerable on some days
Box squats- sometimes, will keep doing when I can.
Trap bar- haven’t tried yet.
I’ve used the trap bar in the past and liked it. Will try tomorrow, thanks!
Basically anything that puts forward pressure or greater than 45degrees, lets say, on the kneecap, sucks and it hurts like a mutha.

Dang, woman! Ok, well at least you know what you can and cannot do…right? RIGHT?! =D <— crazy xanax face.
Its been awhile since I used a trapbar, I liked it though. Guess I’ll have to virtually join you on your biking journeys. Hate doing exercises sitting on my bum though (except for horsey riding), I sit on my ass all day at work. You getting in the autumn feeling yet?
The trap bar is ok. I think it’s good when you get strong enough to really want/need to load up the weights. My gym has KBs up to 70lbs, so I think I’ll stick with those.
Horsey Riding??
I loooved doin that growing up. So much I wanted to be an Equine Vet when I ‘grew up.’
Do you still Ride?
Your knee still giving you trouble? Have you had it checked out yet? Don’t be me! Don’t wait! Although I’m not sure if there was anything I could have done to prevent it. Some are just prone to end up with bad parts.
To be honest, I’m not feeling much of anything lately. Just very blah. I do like this time of year so trying to put on my happy face. But don’t talk to me when Winter comes. I’m already looking forward to Spring.
Skipped the gym and dusted off my bike for a ride instead.
I’m embarrassed to admit how rusty it is…poor bikey. I only took it for a few laps around the block and it felt fine on my knees. yay!
Then I went on a quicky 2 mile walk. For the Winter weather I’m trying to find a Nordic Track Skier that doesn’t cost hundreds. Preferably I’d like to try one out first.
One good thing about possibly moving to FL is that I can still be active outdoors in the ‘cold,’ months because it’s not that cold!
Ah no I don’t ride anymore, although I did last winter for a bit, but did so growing up too, the western style mostly cuz my dad fancied he was an American cowboy, but then I was introduced to english style riding, which is much more involved, you can really feel the strength within the horse. But its just too expensive an activity and diving is over my budget as it is. But I would love to take it up again.
Knee is actually doing better. I’m trying to put on a happy face for winter too, I keep thinking of food though when I think of winter.
Nice you got outdoors! Uh did I miss something, what’s this about Florida??
Yay that cycling doesn’t hurt! Definitely keep taking that bicycle out. Its great way to deal with stress, and you’ve certainly had alot of that lately.
If you move to Florida I’ll be inviting myself over! I loved Floriday on the two occassions I visited, although admittedly for the theme parks. It’s certainly warm, though.
Cal- you would be more than welcome!
yes, VERY warm. We lived there when my son was just learning how to talk…he looooved going outside but I remember dreading it cause it was so humid. That’s the only downside I can think of, plus a lot of people=a lot of traffic.
MT- we are a military family. Hubby is up for new orders in the Spring. Sea/shore rotation is 4 and 2 I believe. We were supposed to leave this year, but he got another year added back on due to the time that he was away last year/into this year. I’m just guessing FL because the only other options are Hawaii and WA. He goes where the planes he flies on are. Knowing the military it would be less costly for them to move us down to FL.
Oh, speaking of theme Parks, we’re going down to Busch Gardens next weekend!
I love it there this time of year, plus they make it all Halloween-y at night
He can start negotiating orders 6-9 months out from when we are due to transfer…so he can put in orders as soon as March!
I hope it happens fast because I’d like to move down there in the Summer before school starts again. We’re looking to rent a house, as well.
That way we can get settled, kids can make new friends, and they won’t have to start a new school 5 months into the year. If I had it my way, that is!
