I was lucky. My dad was an amateur bodybuilder way back in the day. He was 5’4" and just over 140lbs. at competition (probably around 4%bf). His physique looked a lot like the original cartoon superman. He started lifting when he was 14 (ca. 1959) with a 110lb. healthways weight set in his basement that he later used to teach me. Now at 67 he can still do 25 good pullups and his age in pushups (Marie Corps standard). He still has most of his hair and it is still mostly black, so most people think he is in his early 40s.

He couldn’t bench press 135 to save his life, but could tool me in wrestling as I stood 6’1 250ish at the time.
He was 6’3 and 235 so the loss didn’t sting too much.
By “couldn’t bench press 135 to save his life,” do you mean he just wasn’t good at lifting, or that he literally couldn’t bench 135? I’d find the latter a little hard to believe, just due to his size alone lol.
Quite literally, he could not lift a wheel on each side for shit. He just had that man strength (as I called it). That plumber/carpenter/manual labor type of strength that could crush your hand during a handshake without trying while sporting nothing more than a 16" arm at best.

I wonder what he could deadlift.

It depends on the environment that the kid is raised in. I use myself as a benchmark. If someone isn’t stronger than me, they aren’t a monster.
so wait, all you have to be is stronger than your kid and he will consider you a monster?..pfft, that sounds easy
you’d just better hope that when your kid goes to school and talks about you…you’d better be the strongest dad.
No lol.
I most likely will be.
Me too.

I’ll be having my first kid any day now, and of all the things I’ve been thinking about relating to raising a child, this has been very close to the top of my list of priorities, lol. I’ve got 5 years to get there!

I’m stronger than most dads already and I’m just regaining strength, so within the next 10 years, I’ll be the strongest dad like 99.999999% of the time.
Did my dad lift? No, but my son does, and now he’s bigger and stronger than me. (And taller, and smarter, and better-looking,…The list goes on and on.)

Thanks man. Just hoping the birthday doesn’t come on the same day as our fantasy draft… I might have to miss one or the other.
And I’m not missing the draft.

It is a trip man. Will hit week 5 on Wednesday with my little girl. I still haven’t gotten my lifting groove back yet with the lack of sleep but I will get there. I told my wife I have 15 years to build a “Don’t fuck with me or her” neck that makes teenage boys wonder if I could literally rip off their skull with my bare hands.

Start a heavy set of deadlifts right when your daughter brings her first actual bf home.
Be sure to be as loud and aggressive as possible.
Brownie points if you’re doing it shirtless, and when you meet him say “I’d love to shake your hand boy, but I’m worried that I’ll crush it”.

I have two daughters. I will be lifting shirtless in the garage with Whitechapel on full volume when their first dates come to pick them up, regardless of weather (the colder the better, I think).

Note to self: Look like Steel Nation for maximum effect.
I was raised by a single mother. My dad’s favorite lift was the dip.
My dad and mom claimed my dad “used to be able to pick up our kitchen chair with one hand”…knowing what I know now, this would be almost impossible…so…my dad didn’t lift…he did question why I wanted to lift…muscle was ugly…etc…
My kids would say (hopefully) “My dad lifted every day when I was growing up…he competed at 181.9 lbs and wore a singlet…he cut weight while working to stay strong…he put free weights in our garage and taught me how to squat, bench and deadlift…my dad never set any records, but he could kick my ass and my friend’s dads never stood a chance against him”.
So…not sure if that helps…but I think I’m better than my dad on this issue.
yes and still does i sometimes train with him he puts me through my paces me and my two brothers lift also be strong train hard be fit and protect your family

when my older brother came home with a concrete and plastic weight set from Sears, my Pop came out and lifted with me and my brother once.
that was it.
btw - that weight set started me on a lifelong obsession with physical perfection which I have still not attained…
And… my brother stopped lifting, none of my brothers lifted - I am alone in the family with this obsession, and have yet to be understood by them.
(sigh)
shame on them i struggle to understand my younger brothers 15 16 18 who have no interest even tho us older lot all do 24 25 22
