Did You Know Flaxseed Meal...

can be used to replace butter, margarine and oil in baking? Somewhere around here I am sure someone had mentioned it, but somehow I missed it. I have missed it for quite some time on the back of the bag of flaxseed meal I use.

If you are interested it is replaced at a ratio of 3:1 for those who stink at math like I do, that means for 1/2 cup of oil or butter you would use
1 1/2 cups of flaxseed meal. The bag warns the meal causes the item to brown more rapidly.

Anyone tried this? How noticable is it?

I’m thinking about tossing some flaxseed into my pizza crust next time I have a cheat meal.

According to my box of flax seed, you can even use it in replace of egg (1Tbsp flax plus 3Tbsp water). I haven’t tried the substitutions yet, but I plan to eventually. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Wouldn’t that also have the effect of making your entire meal taste like straight ass? I’ve heard of substituting apple sauce for butter before, but I think i’d rather take my flax seed in roughly the same manner as a shot of vodka. As quickly as possible and with some kind of chaser. Have you actually tried using the stuff for cooking before? How brave.

What brand do you use?

I have cooked with whole flaxseeds. Mostly tossed them in a brown rice pilaf type dish I do on occasion. I will also throw the whole seeds on my salad on occasion just to add a different texture to the greens.

Sic- I use Bob’s Red Mill brand.

I am not planning on throwing any meal into anything for a week or so. I am not worthy of a cheat meal right now
 I am only making it to the weight room 2 times per week.

ive learned tons of substitutions like this since starting to eat Paleo…although ive never used flax meal ( i just take the capsules ) i do use olive oil and spices to make like salad dressings and such

Is there a difference between the “milled flax seeds” and just regular old flax seeds that I chop up and turn into a fine meal using a blender?

Nate,
No, generally no difference between fresh ground seeds and “meal”.

…except that you’re assured freshness by grinding your own, once per week.

You know, it’s not too surprising that one can use flax seeds in more than just muffins and pancakes (my faves). They are, after all, fairly rich in (healthy) fat.
