the composition seems to represent Francis’ saintliness in a quaternity of angelic natures
standard depiction of ‘holiness’ deriving from equal development of self at extremes of spectrum balanced left-to-right and top-to-bottom
the devil appears in the fifth place, in the point of an inverted pentagram
nature, sexuality, beastliness are cleaved from him and reduced to the ephemeral but adhere, and menace with lasciviousness, the groin of one of his angels
adds the third ‘z’ dimension to the two dimensional representation delineated by the ‘x’ and ‘y’ co-ordinate graphing of the quaternity of functions
his own head forms the sixth point, completing the interlacing of microcosm and macrocosm in the hexagram
i’m curious how much of this conformity to template is consciously executed. People with no esoteric knowledge regularly perpetrate art unknowingly following rule systems of ancient iconographic traditions while they are in ecstatic states.
Ehh, would have been funnier if he painted in a Girl-Girl scene. Devil face ehh big deal, hell they put all kinds of gouls right on the church back in those days.

The mythology of the church in those days is really interesting. Sibyls and saints and demons. It’s pretty cool stuff.

It really isn’t that much of a stretch though if you look back at a lot of the classic frescoes. Many of the painters were more or less forced into service. Lots of them hid things like this in there paintings.
The face looks entirely different than the rest of the clouds.
That’s a lot clearer than the larger picture, thanks.

The whole set up seemed more Pagan than “Christian”. I mean if you had no clue of Christianity and looked at the art and sculptures of the time it just looks like a whole bunch of gods, demi-gods an demons. Cool stuff

So…people with hooked noses and clouds on their heads are the devil?
Also, that isn’t a smile. Most of us look like that during sex.
Is “The devil” getting some action up there?
If the Lord of the Flies does not get any action we are all doomed.

Many of the other religions were incorporated into christian tradition. That’s how you end up with things like the oracle of Delphi on the sisteen chapel’s ceiling.
The other interesting thing is that traditional christian imagery wasn’t so solidified. So images of adam and eve, god, the devil, heaven and hell, est. vary wildly.

You can even see the outline of the head and ear.
I always like finding modern day faces in Old Master Paintings.
Like in this Rubens’ painting of Sampson and Delilah.
See that soldier in the background?
lol
^Nice, very nice
^LMAO, I hope no one gets this. The idea of this becoming a THING in TN is both LMAO funny and scary.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a rapping,
As of someone gently trapping, trapping at my chamber door.
“Tis some visitor” I muttered “trapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more”.
