Dental Issues

Maybe I’m a really big puff. Well, to be honest with myself, when it comes down to it I am a big puff - as far as dental work goes, atleast.

It’s not that the drill bothers me. It’s not that the sounds bother me… or your head being thrown around a bit while they’re sticking that mental into your tooth… or the sharp impliments scratching at your teeth. No siree. It’s the gagging.

When I was younger, I had to have an impression of my teeth for braces. It was in there for about 30 seconds, and after ten seconds, that was it. I was sick. I was then struggling for my life for another 15 seconds before they could take it out.

I’ve got a cracked filling and I’ve ignored it for a while, but I decided to grab my balls and get it seen to tomorrow.

I was wondering if there are any ways to weaken a really strong gag reflex, or anything you can do to distract yourself, as I believe a really strong gag reflex is also a subconsious thing.

[Bring back the gas in dental surgeries :/]

Ask for gas, man. Seriously. I can handle the procedures just fine. It’s getting the shots that freaks me the hell out. The doc has to go slow w/ administering the local anesthesia, otherwise I am traumatized.

Ever see a 25 yr old girl traumatized, crying, in absolute terror because of a needle? It’s not cute.

The dentist also over medicated me w/ it - she gave me so much that my face was paralyzed on the right for close to 12 hours. My right eye wouldn’t close all the way and I was invuluntarily jerking and my head was bending forward.

She overdosed me thinking it was the pain, not how fast she was inserting the damn needles.

I ask for gas now. And I don’t see her anymore!

I dont think it’s legal in the UK anymore though :\ which sucks

Although I hear they are allowed to give you anti-panic stuff, where it just relaxes you to the point of almost being out? Anyone know the deal with that?

God I sound like a kid :\

I had my upper jaw fractured and lost my front teeth in 2002. (Softball Injury)

I had to have bone grafting, implants and several surgeries. I am so used to drilling, it does not bother me anymore, BUT I do remember my doctor used Ketamine…and at the 3rd or so surgery I would not be knocked out, but had a wonderful hour or two long high and marveled at all the knifes and needles going in me and the moving tract lights above. I have pics, but they are too disgusting for some to handle.

whoah… weird, and nasty. What were you aware of when you were zoned out? How much of it can you remember?

I like hearing about things like this… call me sick, lol

Actually that sounds kind of hot.

One more month until I have dental coverage, I lost 2 molars on my left side due to decay, and even after 4 years they still hurt, and I have a cavite on my right side from chewing on that side all the time, tha last month they’ve bothered me more to the point I can’t sleep at night

Me too! I wanna see pics, man! lol!

Gothic you sicko :o just kidding

That sounds like some nasty dental work you need doing. I’m suddenly feeling a little better about just a cracked filling. I’m gonna have to balls up and take it. Screw the gas or drugs, I’ll conquer my problems.

I know what you mean about pain keeping you up - I go through that occasionally with my wisdom teeth, they play up a treat and cause agony. Doesnt matter if I take painkillers or not, they still cause havoc.

Anyone else got any nasty stories/up and coming treatment?

No nitrous over there?

As far as I’m aware, they arent allowed to use it anymore. They used to do wisdom tooth extraction at the dental clinic, until people occasionally died when they were put under due to an overdose of gas. Now they do them in the hospital.

Personally I dont think doing it at the hospital changes a thing - accidents still happen like that every now and again.

Still dreading tomorrow though. I’d rather get it over and done with!

Great description, had to laugh out loud for that one. I bet you didn’t go up to the local shop to buy groceries straight after getting that done!

you just have to make a joke of it. When you go in, say before you sit down, ‘I’m paranoid about this crap and pain, is it ok for me to shout out fuck as it helps me relax’. The dentist and assistant will actually be laughing at the thought and you get the chance to let out some necessary expletives.

The worst dental story I can remember was this new dentist I went to who was applying some type of ‘bond’ to my back teeth. At one stage while I was wearing the 1980 top gun style glasses, I felt the substance brush across my face. The dentist walks off to let the ‘bond’ set and I started to think to myself, ‘my face is burning, that shit is eating away my face!’ I started wiping it off with the bib thing they wrap around your neck but after a few mins it caused a burn on the side of my face. The bond had an acid effect. The dentist was apologetic but I recall having a bad burn (which luckily didn’t scar) for a long while afterwards.
If only I knew then what I know now. At the time I just walked off and thought it was part of the dentist experience.

LOL! If only I read this before I went in this morning!

Cause of my gag reflex and complete fear of god, the guy said he isnt gonna mess about and deal with me throwing up and objecting to everything. New appointment for the first of august, but now I dont give a flying truck because I’ll be out cold all the while.

I was playing second base, (I was a third baseman usually) for a change and got a lefty (Huge Guy) ground ball with velocity that ranked in the top ten as far as shots go…and I’ve played infield for 20 plus years.

I was short hopping the second hop and charging the ball…looked it down…was doing it all right…and BOOM…the ball hit a rock on the field and the ball came straight up into my mouth. My head was thrown back and I knew I’d been slammed harder than I’d ever been before.

I used to catch fast pitch softball W/O and chest gear and have played third base most of my life, so i’ve been hit in the face, neck, eye, balls, shin etc., but never in the mouth, and never with that kind of uninterrupted velocity.

I pushed my tounge forward and to my dismay I felt warmth and softness and tasted blood, and felt no teeth. I just walked forward with my head down dripping blood all over the place.

As I was looking for ice the shortstop retrieved my FULLY WHOLE ROOT AND ALL teeth. My upper jaw was fractured and basically what happened is the ball acted like a hammer on my upper teeth and punctured the upper jaw and caused the teeth to fly 10 feet in the air. This happened as my head was knocked back originally.

We took the teeth and put them in ice and rushed to my dentist who answered an emergency page at 10pm. WOW. He re-inserted them and wired them in that night, then I went to the ER and got my lips sewn up. Needless to say the teeth did not re take and thus the long process began.

I remember it all, and did not get knocked out. I had many surgeries over 3 years period. I just got my final implants a few months ago.

Do you really want to see pics? My doctor has about 200 surgical photos too. For now I can show the outside gash on my lip and the swelling…looks like a cavemen. I think I’d rather PM them though.

Needless to say I have not played ball since then.

Oh, definitely not! I was so traumatized. I was just… Good God. Glad my pain brought humor to someone, though! LOL!

If you’re ok pm’ing or emailing them, I’m totally up to checking it out. Call me gross like that.

I had my wisdom teeth removed last week. I only had some minor swelling and pain for about 4 days, but it was nothing advil couldn’t handle. I didn’t even use the vicodin they gave me.

However, I had a reaction to the IV general anesthetic. After I woke up, I was barfing up bile and blood and then later dry heaving. Not pleasant.
