Democrats Join Tea Party

Grand Junction, Colorado (CNN) – They are not typical Tea Party activists: A woman who voted for President Obama and believes he’s a “phenomenal speaker.” Another who said she was a “knee-jerk, bleeding heart liberal.”

These two women are not alone.

Some Americans who say they have been sympathetic to Democratic causes in the past – some even voted for Democratic candidates – are angry with President Obama and his party. They say they are now supporting the Tea Party – a movement that champions less government, lower taxes and the defeat of Democrats even though it’s not formally aligned with the Republican Party.

To be sure, the number of Democrats in the Tea Party movement is small. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows that while 96 percent of Tea Party activists identify themselves as either Republican or Independent, only 4 percent say they are Democrats.

Some of these disgruntled voters are taking part in the current Tea Party Express tour. The tour began in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s hometown of Searchlight, Nevada, on March 28 and is making 44 stops across the nation. It ends in Washington on tax day – April 15.

Ann Ducket attended the Tea Party rally in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Wednesday.

A lawyer and lifelong Democrat, Ducket made her political leanings clear: She said she was a campus community organizer for Democratic Sen. George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, voted for Jimmy Carter and Al Gore, and previously ran for elective office in Colorado as a Democrat.

“I was a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and I probably did inhale in college,” Ducket said.

Ducket, who is now an independent and did not vote for Obama, said the president has “carried things to an extreme.”

“I think we’ve gone too far on the side of government doing too much,” Ducket said. “The Democratic Party is wanting to take care of everyone, instead of helping everybody stand on their own two feet.”

Roxanne Lewis expressed a similar point of view. A small business owner in Grand Junction, Lewis described herself as a lifelong Democrat and called the president a “phenomenal speaker.” She voted for him because she “believed in what he was saying: change.”

But, Lewis added, "I should’ve listened a lot closer when he talked about ‘spreading the wealth.’ "

Asked how she feels about having voted for the president, Lewis said “I feel lied to, cheated and raped.”

Lewis criticized the taxpayer-funded bailouts of financial institutions, which began under former President George W. Bush, and the bailout of General Motors and Chrysler.

“These are not the Democrats that I have been brought up with,” Lewis said. However, she said she will continue to be a Democrat.

"We hear from folks, probably at every rally, who say, ‘I was a Democrat,’ " Levi Russell, communications director for the Tea Party express tour, said.

“Having more Democrats join the movement shows that it is more representative of the American people than the antics of the Obama, [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, Reid leadership,” Russell said.

The Democratic National Committee declined to comment.

David Saucedo is a rapper and community activist who frequently appears at Tea Party rallies. Using the stage name “Polatik,” he performs rap songs that slam President Obama and the Democrats.

Though he eventually voted for GOP Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election, he said he was initially impressed with the president.

Now Saucedo has turned into an Obama critic. “A lot of the things he says sound good, until you look at the consequences of what they will do on the long term.”

Saucedo also said that most of his family voted for the president but now support the Tea Party. He said his sister in law’s views sum up the family sentiment.

“She regrets voting for Barack Obama,” he said.

Random guy on the street with no obvious qualifications says, “Obama is a Communist and wants to harm America.” It must be so. If FOX says it and this random person agrees, it must be so.

So, do you wish to suppress criticism from the press and the public then?

Of course he would not. To him, the definition of “unbiased” media is media which works carefully to avoid ever transmitting any biased views such as that Obama is doing anything wrong, or that liberalism is any way wrong, etc.

That’s not suppressing criticism: it’s being unbiased.

Criticism cam be some of the best medicine for someone. I got a ton of it when I got to college, and because of it, made the most progress. Rather than believe the smoke blown up my ass by people who didn’t want to come off offensive.

I am now overly critical of myself. Obama has a mountain of responsibility on his shoulders, why can he not do the same, with the fate of so many in his hands. Talk about a man with an ego.

How hasn’t he taken the criticism well? What are you basing this on? Are you just talking out of your ass?

Funny that article is from CNN, I get a pretty liberal leaning feel from them usually.

He hasn’t acknowledged the criticism, and in fact has been dismissive about it. Those who disagree with him are deemed racists full of vitriol. You have about half of the people in this country who disagree with where he is taking this country, and he continues to not listen. What happens when you don’t listen? Scott Brown is what happens. Chris Christie, Bob McDonnell, and more to come.

That is the problem young man, is that someone who has some degree of humility would at least listen. If I had that many people pissed off at me, I would take a serious look as to why, rather than him blowing it off. You know what the basis for that behavior is, pure ego. He knows what’s best, at least in his mind. The bloom is off the rose with this man. He has continued many of the same policies and bullshit political backroom deals. You know who make deals in backrooms? People who are up to no good. People hide shit when they have a reason to do so. At least Bush never ran on hope and change, he basically made it clear that his bullshit would continue.

The funny thing about it, is that he is doing all the work to undo himself. People can just sit back, watch, and wait until his next blunder. My tax guy said it best, the people voted for a Chicago politician for president, and that is what they got,so why be puzzled.

By listen you mean wholeheartedly agree. And your tax guy didn’t say that, FOX news did. (USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)

Fed, I can’t really blame you. Both you and Ryan have no need to work hard, the way many of us did.

For a 21 yr old, Barry has provided many things for you and your generation that some of us older folk didn’t get handed to us. Subsidized health care, cars, student loans, yep I would be riding his nutsack too if I had all that handed to me. I just want Barry to tell me what to do now, since my doctor told me that he is considering closing up his practice because of Barry Care. But Barry said I get to keep my doc if I like him right?

Yes my tax guy said that, think about it, he is an accountant and hates taxes. When you start paying taxes, you might realize how it is money lost in the wind. You might as well burn it in your fireplace, at least then you get to actually watch it go up in smoke.

I work very hard as do my parents. I have fantastic health coverage my mother and father worked incredibly hard to get me. They pay nearly 50 grand a year for my education and a similar amount for my brother’s legal education out of pocket with no loans. We both went to two of the best schools in the nation, because, you guessed it, we work very very hard. My family is a testament to the virtues of capitalism.

On the other hand, the current state of our economy is a testament to capitalism’s worst ills. Further, I simply do not share the belief that there is ALWAYS a trade off between efficiency and equity. But please don’t tell me about hard work.

Fixed that for ya ; )

So you came from a family with deep pockets, it makes sense now. You have no problem spending recklessly when you grew up having parents with a fat bank account. You see, not everyone had parents with huge wallets. Some of us had to earn grants, scholarships, or take out loans for our education. We did it on our own.

So you have been indoctrinated in the idea of someone helping you. You should applaud your parents hard work and conservative financial approach, if they spent money like you, there would not have been money for you and your brother for school. How funny that the financial success your parents achieved through Capitalism, you are so quick to condemn it. Trust me when I tell you, you would not have had as privileged a life had your parents had to deal with Socialism. They would have lost at least half of their wealth in taxes, so everyone else and their brother could go to school.

It is no wonder now as to why you have no clue about the value of a dollar. You have not had to rely on yourself for your own money.

What can ya say Push, the kid could have kept his same thought process, ditched college, and saved the parents a damn near quarter mill. Now THAT is what I call economics for your ass.

What we have is barely capitalism. While we’re at it, can I start calling apples “oranges”?
