And if one wants an idea of just how little it’s recognized, JEWbacca didn’t know. Not once have I seen any mention of this month at college.

And what state do you go to school in? Is there a significant Jewish population? Do you think your school is representative of what goes on in say CA?

“I live in MT and there is no mention of black history month. Therefore it’s not big at all!”

York, a very large university in Toronto use to cancel all classes on Jewish holidays up until 2008.

That didnt happen where I went to school because the population was 95% white… You cater to the population. UCLA offers a degree in Jewish history… Does your school Sloth?

I am from CA and moved around a bit so, I had the chance to grow up around people of all races and cultural backgrounds. Other than Black History month there are no other “History” Months that get that much attention. Latino, Jewish, Asian they are all akin to national hat day. There is some mention of them but, no real study. Honestly, I would hear more about them on T.V. since they remind you every other commercial break. There is no comparison to Black History where in school we have to learn about certain individuals like MLK, Malcolm X, George Washington Carver (WHO DID NOT INVENT PEANUT BUTTER)and were forced to read terrible books like “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Their Eyes were Watching God”.

*I am Latino went to a High School that was 80-85% Latino 15-20% Asian. Our “History” months came and went.

Good posts Prof X.

Google “Black History Month Montana” and see how much comes up. Lots of stuff. According to census data the black population by percentage in Montana is only 0.5% Google “Irish American Heritage Month Montana” and see how much comes up - You’ll have to look real hard to find anything. Montana has significant numbers of Irish Americans. In fact, the city of Butte has a higher percentage of Irish Americans than any other city in America.

So the population isn’t being catered to is it? Just like the fact that my local police station has “LGBT Rights” pamphlets when there are very likely no LGBT people in our community. You see it’s a government produced pamphlet that goes to every single police station in the state. The reason is that “LGBT” stuff gets lots of funding because of all the leftists in the state and federal governments. Nothing to do with the number of queers and catering to the population.

We’re all special in some way aren’t we?

Professor X or may I call you Charles? Nothing personal here but I feel you perhaps have an inferiority complex and it has nothing to do with your skin tone or color.

If you cannot in all seriousness see that… “Hey You Won The Battle” now let’s get to the business of making AMERICA work the way it’s supposed to and stop the ticky tac whining, then conceivably YOU are the problem.

It’s okay to stand up for yourself and what you truly believe in. But our country is moving in the WRONG DIRECTION in crime, jobs, race relations except black men and white women, no pun here. Because if black men’s outreach to white men advanced to that degree this conversation would be about how to build an anabolic steroid from scratch in our secret basement gym labs.

See then you and I would together deal with the ticky tac whining from feminists and gays. See a parallel? Please don’t tell me you are gay.

Doesn’t that sound credible friend? You have to meet me halfway if you want me to meet you halfway. I don’t have PM capability but I did friend request you quite awhile back from another thread and look at us now.

I would much rather discuss what I joined T-Nation for and that is to make me a more informed HUMAN BEING about making the human body stronger and healthier and inspire others to same goal.

Which again makes me wonder why these people have such a problem with BLACK history month but have absolutely no problem to the point of complete ignorance of their existence when it comes to all of these months for every other race.

Bottom line is, yes, many blacks in this country felt that there needed to be a voice for Black Americans and that they were underrepresented and disenfranchised enough to warrant it. [/quote]

I’ve noticed most people of Western European descent do not really have strong ties to their ancestors homeland. They identify themselves as Canadian/American first and foremost.

I don’t think it’s taught because the population really doesn’t care.

lol - I think I heard Ahmedinjad say something similar regarding the number of gay people in Iran. Believe it or not there are gays in your community. Maybe even someone you’ve talked to!

According to google, Australia is up there in regards to searches for gay porn.

I live in a very small, conservative(relatively) community. I know everyone in the community and I believe it unlikely that any of them are “LGBT.”

Okay…thanks for that.

I am sure there is more about Black History Month because it is more popular more than likely due to its actual need in regards to helping a disenfranchised group of people regain a sense of culture and accomplishment. Just like what was said about Jewish Month, if those cultures already have or feel no need for a deeper understanding of their heritage, then OBVIOUSLY there would be less focus on a month dedicated to the understanding of it.

Your question seems to completely dismiss POPULARITY vs “POPULATION REPRESENTATION”. Google does not represent the needs of the population. It reflects the pornagraphic wants.

Could you tell me the exact date “the battle was won” and everyone was treated equally the next day?

You do have a date, right?

What is this even saying? Your sense of sentence structure needs some remediation.

I haven’t even logged in for about 5 days. I honestly don’t understand why anyone would be concerned enough about why I posted in a thread to post just to ask the question.

I already wrote why this topic interested me on the first page. I even mentioned that my dad was a history teacher. Are you reading this stuff or just looking for things to analyze?

Agreed. Also, it needs to be understood that before the late 70’s, most of the mass media in this country only focused on the majority. This left an entire segment of the population with absolutely no role models in the public eye that were not athletes or local criminals. That is why early studies conducted showing a black doll and a white doll to kids during those years revealed responses that the kids believed the black doll was “ugly” or “bad” in comparison.

Remember, there didn’t even used to be black Barbie dolls or GI Joes. Blacks seen in media were usually degraded…even in cartoons.

Simply put, if you were a part of the majority, public current society was your “culture”. Everything was catered to the majority which would mean less need for any concept of “base roots” or heritage.

30,000+ people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Butte MT each year. There is clearly a strong interest in Irish culture and history.

That just means there is a strong desire to get fucked up and drunk.

You aren’t very good with this debate stuff, huh?

That is like saying that since most of America celebrates Christmas that it means everyone of them is Christian.

Most of the people I see celebrating St. patty’s day don’t know shit but where the bar is. They aren’t loading up on Irish historical info.

This is one example how in some instances you lack perspective because of your geography.
