Lol there are plenty of specialties that can make you a millionaire in earnings even as a annual income. It takes being smart and nailing your boards and networking but plenty do it.

Have fun paying off your debt and 300k isn’t that much sorry to say. What speciality you thinking of because you better plan on rocking your classes and tests only the competitive specialties will get you to those salaries. And they get more competitive by the year. I’m in year 3 atm[/quote]

300k isn’t that much? This is one of the dumbest things i’ve heard yet. Please tell me you didn’t go into medicine solely for the financial rewards? I’ll be happy with 200k. As far as debt i’ll likely only end up paying 65% of my tuition, thank you financial aid and scholarships. Too bad it’s a lower tier school. I’m thinking about taking a year off to improve my app so I can get into an upper tier school. btw what specialty are you looking to get into?

Fellas, in court, you generally have to have an earning’s track record before you even get to argue about what your future earnings might be. Outside of court, you just sound like a fucking douche bag bragging about what you might make in the future before you have even gotten your first professional job or earned a penny in your chosen profession. After you get your first professional job, you hopefully will learn that bragging about what you make is unprofessional and, again, just makes you sound like a fucking douche bag.

In the grand scheme of things it’s not and it will be less by the time you’re out. An anesthesia doc I was with makes 500k and to help his kid through school and retire with 3 mil he needs to work another 15 years. He is 36.

Anyways. I have a couple. Anesthesia, psych, ophtho

I think you may need to readjust your standards a bit.

Relative to some, 300k or 500k isn’t much, but relative to most, it’s unfathomably high. Not a whole lot of people retire with anywhere near 3 mil either.

What do you consider “enough”, if 300k isn’t much?

I wasn’t talking to anybody in particular; the thread had that vibe and I said what was on my mind. I’d also note, however, that young professionals need to keep in mind how their banter about money can come off in ways that they might not intend. Especially around staff who are never going to make 6 figures and clients who have to pay bills for your services. Its good to get into a habit of being cautious about how you discuss money.

Edit: And I re-read my post and it was unnecessarily dickish. So I probably need to head some of my own advice.

It’s the Internet man. Rereading mine I sound like an ass but sounded fine in my brain. But then lacking body language and tone changes it all. And I never discuss that stuff unless an attending brings it up which is all of two times. Mainly I don’t care as long as I can pay my stupid 175k + of loans off. But certainly not a subject I feel comfortable trying to talk about unless the other person brings it up and never around someone who isn’t on the same “level”

I didn’t know doctors still made 500k. I’m assuming it’s a big city where a gallon of regular gas is close to $4. Doctors don’t need to retire, they become more valuable the older they get. My family physician is 72 years old and still going strong. Do you think he wants to sit at home all day and crack open a can, NO!. I don’t think about retirement because I can see myself being a doctor till i’m 70+. That doesn’t mean you can can’t get involved in other ventures with the capital you possess (Real Estate, Stocks, etc). I’m thinking about either going into Internal Medicine or EM. Obviously this is subject to change once I begin my rounds in a few years.

Doctors and pilots are ideal venture capitalists for get rich quick schemers - so you might want to learn a financial trick or 2 before the loans are paid off and you start have something to invest.

This is a worthwhile point for young professionals (including myself) to keep in mind. I work in a healthcare environment (I’m an epidemiologst & biostatistician at a large research hospital) and have seen doctors put their foot in their mouth more than once talking about money in front of their nurses/secretaries/etc. Whining about money in front of people making $40K when you make $300K or more, everyone loses.

But cities have a much much smaller earning potential at least for the first 5-10 years than the Midwest.

Have fun with IM. That residency is a bitch. Not like surgery but not fun either
