Death Metal

I came to this actually.

Great song, great video.

Get’s me going. Love this shit.

Ha ha ha! Good one! I thought I would never see that video ever again!

If anyone wants to, that band was one of Phil Anselmo’s numerous side projects called Necrophagia. He played guitar in it.

Here’s a little trivia. See if anybody can tell me who these bands became:

Mantas
Abomination
Xecutioner
Rigor Mortis

I only know that Mantas became Death

And Xecutioner became Obituary. I wasn’t aware that Rigor Mortis evolved into anything further.

Yes, as mentioned Mantas became Death.
And also as mentioned, Xecution became Obituary.

Now the others, however, get a little questionable considering how many bands were called Abomination and Rigor Mortis.

For Rigor Mortis, I believe you’re referring to the incredible Immolation. Their “Dawn of Possession” album blew me away when it came out.\

For Abomination, I can’t tell if you mean the one that actually started out as Master (Paul Speckmann and crew) or the one that kinda started out as Revenant, formed into Profanatica, and eventually Incantation.

Really Dawn of Possession blew you away? I always consider that their weakest effort.

Failure For Gods >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dawn of Possession

I was referring to the Abomination that eventually became Brutality. They are one of the most overlooked in the Florida death metal scene. Probably because they only put out 3 albums.

No, no…I never said it was their best…just that it was an incredible debut at the time…it had something new and unique compared to a lot of other bands at the time. I agree Failure For Gods is better.

Yeah, they were definitely a pretty good band…it was a shame to see them go. Interesting note, it is said that Larry Sapp (original guitar/vox) who was on the early demos went on to become a woman.

Although I soaked up most of the death and grind scenes from the beginning until about the mid-90’s, I delved more into black metal as the death/grind scene started to get over-saturated. I still listen to and collect it, but obscure black metal has been more in line with my tastes since about '91.

I’m still manage to find some new and interesting death/grind every once in a while. But with so many bands out there, they really have to have something to offer in order to stand out.

That’s odd, my posts have my wife’s user name??

I’ve heard a lot of these new “death metal” bands. I can’t stomach the majority of them. You know Slipknot actually consider themselves death metal. I know during the mid 90s the field got really saturated and you got a bunch of bands that should have never gotten contracts putting out albums.

I still think the best of the best in death metal bands had already come out by about 1994. It, like punk, was never meant to last very long.

Like all the deathcore and shit like that…I just don’t get it. And most don’t even know of the bands that started it all. I definitely agree with you, all the best had already come out by '94. The classics will always stand head and shoulders above the crap that exists today. Like I said, you can find something every once in a while…but it takes some digging.

Slipknot are not death metal, and I wish they would just disappear entirely.

Absu - Nunbarshegunu

YOB - Ether

Church of Misery - Road to Ruin

Anaal Nathrakh - More Of Fire Than Blood

Flesh Consumed - New Order of Intelligence

FleshGod Apocalypse - Oracles / Retrieving My Carcass

Isis- Threshold of Transformation

Blut aus Nord - Odinist

Blut Aus Nord have always been in my list of favorites. Their use of fretless guitars has helped them craft riffs unlike anyone else. “The Work Which Transforms God” is an incredible album. Absu’s new album is awesome as well.

that Blut aus Nord song is amazing

Yeah, I like the direction of where the scene is going. I think extreme music is going to be just fine.

I don’t know, I think it kind of depends on where you look. I don’t know if you’re into the Technical stuff, but there’s always good current extreme metal, IMO.

Bands like,

Severed Savior
Odious Mortem
Fleshgod Apocalypse
Unmerciful
Psycroptic
Spawn of Possession
Devourment
Disgorge
Goratory

etc etc. Maybe it’s just a personal taste thing, but I could keep going for sure.

It’s often times hard to compare to the Immolations, Incantations, Pyrexia, Death, etc, but I think the scene is thriving fairly well.

He may not be into the DEATH part yet, but my 4 mo old son will sleep to:

Nothing Face
Devil Driver
FFDP
Sevendust
Killswitch

to name a few!!!

I find the major drawback of those bands and that they don’t let riffs play long enough to really start banging your head, and you barely hear them more than once. People listen to metal for different reasons though.

Pyrexia…nice one. That name doesn’t come up often enough. I remember when they were just kids, along with Exhumed. Of course, I remember a lot of bands when they were just kids, haha.

Actually, this is one of the reasons I like those types of bands - Spawn of Possession especially. There are times that it does get a little frustrating though, but the only SOP song that, in my opinion, is frustrating to listen to is The Forbidden

That intro riff fucking OWNS, but once you get into it, they totally shift gears. A tad annoying, but nothing major. SOP rules.
