I used to hate squatting until I watched and understood a Rippetoe video. Everything changed learning how to generate power.
I’m tall and want to conventional deadlift heavy. Doesn’t matter how many articles or videos I’ve never experienced the natural power like I did with the squat.
I don’t get it, how do you learn the deadlift with nobody to teach you?
Don’t overthink it for starters.
Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe has a perfectly passable explanation of the movement, although I don’t think he’s the end-all, be-all authority.
The most important concept in both squatting and deadlifting is probably bracing. Here’s my favorite video on how to get better at bracing your core.
Brian Alshrue has a lot of thoughts on the deadlift and I think he’s pretty good at explaining it.
At the end of the day you’re just bending over and picking up the barbell while keeping your core tight, your spine neutral and making sure you have a good, consistent set-up.
