Scrotus, you deadlift 635? Holy shit, that’s a great lift. Do you pull conventional or sumo? Also, how long did it take you to reach this level?
I’ve also done a lot of cleans, high pulls and squats and increased my deads: from 550 to 573 in a month. 573 was about 2 weeks ago, in less then 3 weeks I’m gonna pull 595.

I agree. Lifters will focus on building a deadlift without deadlifting and don’t have the grip strength to hold on to the bar. I have seen this too many times.
Just do extra grip work + when doing enough high pulls etc. your working your grip.
- do rom. deads etcetera with normal grip.
I have definitely seen improvements without deadlifting, per say, but doing exercises close to that.
I got my deadlift from 405 to 485 without doing any straight-bar deadlifts from the floor, but I did do rack pulls and trap-bar deadlifts along with various forms of squatting. Grip was never a problem for me because I was doing plenty to help that out and I have big hands.
I try to spend more time doing the exercises that are challenging for me. I have always been very good at trap-bar and conventional straight-bar deadlifting, so I figure I don’t need to spend as much time on them because I’ll always be pretty strong there- relative to my other numbers.
Deadlifting off a platform was brutal for me the first time I tried it so I have been working on that and also front squats as I’m not good at them either. I figure if I can “catch up” and make progress in those two lifts then I will probably be able to hit some PRs when I come back to the ones that are easier for me.

I guess I should have elaborated more. Grip problems are more of a problem with lifters that only use squats and good mornings to build their deadlift. I have trained around a lot of people that train Westside and I have seen quite a few miss deadlifts due to grip.
My deadlift went from 200kg to 227.5kg in 2 1/2 months from box squatting. Pulled maybe twice in that time.
