Deadkong's Latest Journal

Oh, and I forgot situps. I am thinking that with deadlifts using abdominals as a stabilizer, twisting my torso with bag drill Mondays and Wednesdays, I should cut it down to one day a week of direct work. I am bumsliding with this over the last few months, I seem to remember almost acing 4 sets with 25lbs behind my head.

I find it interesting. Someone posted somewhere a while back that deadlifting on a 5 X 5 basis might tire me out a bit, what with my other training during a week. Last week I pooped out after a third set at 315lbs, which is neither heavy by mens’ standards nor my own, considering past demonstrated ability (largely before I started posting here).

Yesterday I went out to entertain myself, even really a day time live show, and still found myself leaving early because I hadn’t planned my diet or shopping for with any intelligence. I barely had any leafy greens, and found myself eating lamb 20 minutes or so before going to bed. I was down about something anyway, and just felt shitty trying to make any progress with this, I gave up after a first set of 5 and said tomorrow.

the problem with that is I am planning to do bag drill also tomorrow, and wonder how my energy will be affected. I will do rope work on Tuesday. Even if I do deads early and drill later, I am wondering if it will all be a huge effort to get done.

deadlift 315lbs X 5 X 5 X 5

later in the day.

2 rounds heavy bag drill.

I decided I will stick with 3 sets of 5 for deads as reasonable, next week I will try 335lbs.

bag drill I was a tiny bit tired for, I had done a long walk during the day, but my review of video has me thinking my form is gradually improving. I will still need to try and get a better range of motion with my arms, and bring them back into position more diligently.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 week 3, days 4,5

Yesterday I skipped, usual thing alternating sides every 15 seconds, although I thought i did poorly.

Today was bag drill, 2 rounds. I wouldn’t post a shitload so soon except that I want to view the videos on my notebook in bed and can’t get youtube to go to full screen, I recorded them on a different computer.

Oh, and I did BB bicep curls
65lbs X 10 X 10 X 5

Friday, september 14, 2012 week 4 day 1

dips body (205lbs) + 60lbs X 3 X 3 X 3 X 3 X 2 fail
BB upright rows 135lbs X 3 X 3 X 3 X 2 X 2

chinups body X 3 X 3 X 3 X 2 X 1
DB incline press 2 X 70lbs X 3 X 3 X 3 X 3 X 2

twist situps
Body + 20lbs X 5,5 X 4,4 X 3,2

Good day today, and I will explain. Yesterday I was up late at a live show, and my diet and sleep patterns were off, so that is mitigating. I just barely failed short of quorum with dips. Higher weight with rows.

chins a drop off, but so what. Inclines I finally relearned the technique of almost doing a clean to get the weights into position. I lapsed in concentration on the last set and knew I would have got quorum. ]

So, next time I will likely breeze through dips and use 75lbs dumbbells for inclines.

Yesterday I did rope work, but I am getting giddy about increasing intensity and will drive for it next time. Muay thai kicking drill again, I am a bit rusty.

deadlift 335lbs X 5 X 4 X 4

Yes, am finally moving weight up, but compromising total volume. I expect brutal work with bag drill tomorrow, I look forward to it.

Bag drill, 2 rounds. What I do now is record a minute session, and immediately review it to see if what I feel is on track actually is. Then the 2 3 minuters. I am not finding my stamina improving with this, I am not ready to add a 3rd round. what I will say is that I am still leaning forward over a lead leg that isn’t extended far enough. Still, I think my hind foot is getting more consistent pivot and I am not as bad at thinking I have to shuffle back the moment the cross jab lands. this immediately causes the hind foot to come off the floor which is not proper balance or anything else.

Otherwise, I think I am rocking the bag like a bat out of hell, so maybe my strength with it is improving, although I can’t quantify it like with weight lifting.

rope work tomorrow after muay thai kicks. I expect to kick this into better shape, the rope work that is, by alternating sides every 5 seconds as my road to eventually every skip.

tuesday, September 18, 2012 week 4 day 5

Muay thai kicks, 15 minutes.

I recorded this and even though I am feeling miserable today and it got in my head to wimp out, I am gradually improving form. Also holding me back is the anticipation of smarting pain on my shins. Somehow I am a cripple doing left kicks, so I harped on my strengths.

3 3 minute rounds of rope work. Now I am alternating feet everey 5 seconds and it went better than I thought. I am still chasing down that eventual alternating every skip.

It’s disconcerting that the sound does not synch up with the visual when I watch your bag drills!

Good work in here.

It must be like that ‘Kung Pow: enter the dragon movie’ that spoofed cheap martial arts movie production. I have a $20 camera I got on sale for $10, it basically suits my needs.

I don’t know what your knowledge is of fight training, I could use a broad opinion base. Still, if you think it looks something like what it is supposed to, I will be encouraged.

Bag work later today, I will determine then if a video is worth posting.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012 week 4 day 6

heavy bag drill, 2 3 minute rounds. I reviewed the videos for these rounds and don’t think I have any stepwise improvement. Ok, I think I am averaging better form, slightly, but today I really think I reamed the bag better than most often before. Slightly better with keeping hind foot contact.

The thing is it is hard to contemplate intended form when also anticipating the gruelling fatigue that goes along with it.

If by popular demand anyone wants to see the videos, type Encore!, otherwise I will consider it again next week.

skipping rope work. I decided to escalate my progression with this from last week skipping on one foot for 15 seconds before switching, to every 5 seconds on Tuesday, to every second skip today. I caught the rope on my toes several times the first round, but did much better later. I am closing in on every skip alternation. Soon, soon.

Friday, September 21, 2012 week 5, day 1

dips body (204lbs) + 60lbs X 3 X 3 X 3 X 3 X 3 fail
Bb upright rows 135lbs X 3 X 3 X 3 X 3 X 3

chinups body X 4 X 4 X 3 X 3 X 2
DB incline press 2 X 77.5lbs X 3 X 3 X 3 X 1 75lbs X 1

twist situps body + 20lbs X 5,5 x 5,4 stopped

Great day today, if only for dips. I reached quorum despite having doubts in early sets, although I did fail going for the 4th. 70lbs next week, and increase for upright rows. No, maybe I want to get 5 last set for that.

Chins an actual improvement. Press I used 15lbs higher weight for because I had confidence I could relearn how to clean the dumbbells into position, although at times there is chest trauma when the weights fall into start position. I am still happy with them, 2 X 75lbs next time.

Situps I don’t know what to say about, maybe my energy was used before I got to them.

Edit: As to my clean motion to get the dumbbells into place, I am using a lot of posterior chain to do it, and I wonder if it has cross over benefit with deadlifting.

Monday, September 24, 2012 week 5, days 2,3

deadlift 335lbs x 5 X 5 X 5

later, heavy bag drill, 2 3 minute sets.

So, I was happy to get the 335lbs for what I wanted, I wonder if when I do 355lbs next week if I should start reducing volume to 3 X 3. Or maybe wait until I hit 375lbs. Or immediately next go for the 3 X 3 AND leap to 375lbs. that is actually the weight I strained my hamstring with several year ago, but then I was doing a 5 X 5 routine. So I grant it still won’t be like the good old days. Really, back then the heaviest I ever got was 405lbs X sets of 3,2,2, 4 minutes between sets, here it is 3. If I can exceed that some future week…

Bag work. I have been generally following Russ Anber’s videos on technique, but also recently took another look at a Freddie Roach video on how to work the bag. His had a slightly narrower stance. Also, Anber said the hook is more twisting the torso, particularly effective after twisting the other way for the cross jab.

Roach said it is more of a repositioning of footwork. Weight back on a flat hind foot, on the toes of the lead.

I tried to adjust for these differences, but felt awkward. Until I cam make what seems like real progress, I won’t post a video.

Wednesday, september 26, week 5 days 5,6

Yesterday, rope work. I did the first round alternating feet every second skip, but got into a great groove for the next 2 alternating every skip. I am now happy and confident that I soon drive up the intensity with this scheme and come closer to resembling what everyone else does. Once I can drive 3 hard rounds, I will add more.

Today. Bag drill

I made 2 short videos just to make sure I am going through the mechanics, with less shuffling around than I have in the past. Then I did 2 official 3 minute editions, but after reviewing them I thought I should go back and try a third in which I just do cross jab/hook. The emphasis was twisting the torso into the movement transition, and keeping an eye on also transitioning the footwork from front to hind. What I post here is the third, I will worry more about mobility in future, I wonder if people think I am on track so far.

Skipping rope. 3 3 minute rounds, alternating feet each skip. I did reasonably well, I occasionally caught my toes on the rope, but only when I got overconfident and let my focus slip. I got a bit more intense than last time, so I am headed in the right direction with this. I call myself happy with it.

Muay thai kicks, 14 minutes. I haven’t been consistent with practicing this, but I am better with left kicks than before, so happy there.

I know nothing about this. But it seems like a great physical outlet. And you seem to be enjoying it? Any plans to spar anyone?

I am itching to get a partner, I just don’t know how to find one. I am enjoying it, but a large component of that is a sense of success that maybe I can confidently have.

Cancelled today shortly after starting because work was very physical in the morning, but I thought i might try anyway. Soon I knew to give up. Still, I did a 3 minute round on the bag but thought my hands were very slow, they are anyway so that didn’t encourage me. Sllghtly off technique, or I will review the video again and decide.

I was going to go out to a live show tonight, not because anything is playing but because I just want something to do. The listings for stuff I might like are bleak, and since a work assignment that I thought might be light lifting for 3 hours turned into sweat for more, and I didn’t plan meals all that well and tried to catch up before lifting later, I don’t have the spunk anyway. I drank too much coffee these last 2 days in preparation, but maybe that is part of the problem. Late tonight to go shopping, I want to get fresh lamb leg, and see how i feel tomorrow night. I still don’t want to bugger myself for deadlifts on Sunday.

I just started creatline, again. I was using it until a week and a half ago, but couldn’t keep regular, so I am starting a new loading phase and will keep to it.

deadlift 355lbs X 3 X 3 X 3

Good day. I was unsure when to drop volume to a 3 X 3, I did it here as a sort of deload. I had an extra rep in me, but withheld, I think this is the heaviest I have gone since my original hamstring strain. 375lbs next week, I will see when I increase rest between sets to 4 minutes.

When I get a 3 X 3 at 395lbs I will have reached a goal and will alternate between squats and deadlifts each week, something like what Fightingirish26 is doing.

heavy bag, 3 rounds. I got a good feeling after 3 rounds, but am not sure if there is enough progress to post a video.
