Yep, took the loaded carries & made that No.8 instead for the “Death By” layers… love this particular setup; appeals to my all or nothing personality, though these headaches are making me a bit wary !
The headaches are likely from a sudden and excessive increase in intra-abdominal pressure created by doing a strong valsalva manoeuver when attempting maximal lifts.
What happens during clean & presses is that you hold your breath, contract the abs hard when you do the clean. The valsalva manoeuver drastically increase pressure… but upon catching the weight on your shoulders the pressure is released and you actually have a very important pressure drop both because of the release of the intra-abdominal pressure but also because of the sudden change of position, kinda like when you stand up too fast and become light headed (orthostatic hypotention).
THEN you have to press a max weight from that state, so you re-establish another valsalva while not having recovered from the pressure drop.
That’s why you actually see some lifters black out between the clean and the jerk in competition. I had that happen to me and actually fell on the platform.
My best recommendation is not to release the pressure completely after the clean, and actually try to bring in more air as soon as the bar is on your shoulders. The thing to avoid is the up and down in pressure, so if you immediately get some air in, it might do the trick.
Another thing is to stay more relaxed during the clean. With max weights you might get too tensed which might cause an excessively high increase in intra-abdominal pressure… also, if you are doing clean & press with a belt, try not using one. You might use less weight at first, but the belt can artificially overincrease the intra-abdominal pressure.

Thank you for this. I’ll give it a shot.
I wasn’t getting headaches, but I’ve gotten lightheaded from some of the cleans. I had to abandon a handful of reps since I didn’t trust myself to put it overhead.
