I forgot about this movie. Back in the hay day of Will Ferrel movies.
Today was 151 workout.
151 KB swings - 3 sets
151 Goblet squats - 5 sets
151 pushups - 4 sets
151 KB Rows x2 - 4 sets
151 KB Swings - 3 sets
Used a 60lb bell
Figure it was time for an update. My wife has had pneumonia for last 2.5 weeks. Meanwhile, I moved our family into our new home solo. It was five days of intense workout in the hot sun. All settled in new house for most part and then BAM, Monday I’m not feeling well i ignored the aches and blamed it on a weighted vest 3 miles walk I went on Sunday night. Wake up yesterday… and hard to ignore the extreme chills and violent shaking as I’m fully dressed in sweats, sweatshirt and shirt jacket completely underneath a thick blanket. I’ve never felt this bad in my life.
Not doing great on health front. Lots of joint pain, particularly my knees and hips… which makes sleeping terrible. Well, by sleep I mean lay down when it’s dark outside, because I can’t sleep. It takes me 20 minutes of pep talk to pull my phone out of my pocket to read a text.
I might have a problem… I went to change my sweat soaked shirt and got a look at my abs in the mirror and realized the lack of food/appetite is helping weight loss.
Heal up dude! That sounds gnarly.
It’s pretty bad. Got over the weakness part, now just breathing issues. Good news is that I had terrible asthma my whole childhood, so this is a familiar feeling.
Appetite is non existent. Yesterday I forced myself to eat half a chipolte burrito bowl. Just rice, meat, cheese, salads and guacamole. That’s all I ate.
Decided to get out today, so had kids hop in golf cart and head to playground. Had this new leg vain across my tibia. New sign of leanness.
Tuesday 6/12
First workout in new home and in like 3 weeks. Breathing is fairly limited when heart rate increases, but wanted to do some easy movements.
High Incline (one step from OHP) Bb press
10x135
3x7x155
Slight incline DB Press
3x20x45
Nothing hard. Didn’t push near failure. Just moving. Will try a light back day today. Perhaps go for a walk this evening with weight vest. I need to decide if I’m going to still compete next month. I haven’t trained BJJ in almost a month. It’s not a serious comp, but wanted double gold regardless.
I went 18 years without training for my most recent comp…haha. Get after it: can’t beat those live reps.
So I got caught up on your log… it’s been a bit!
Congrats on the baby, the new house, new job(s), and killing it on the physique front!
I hope you get through this illness, it sounds nasty.
Wow… this was hard to read again. My life has changed drastically since then. I can’t go into too much detail for legal reasons on a public forum… but this decision ruined my life in so many ways. 4.5 years later and we just finished adoption. The process was terrible, killed us, robbed innocence from my life (saying this as a fully mature man), caused permanent trauma that I’ll eventually seek treatment for, destroyed my career, moved me 4 times and ultimately out of the state.
My wife and I are fine, relationally. Probably better, but navigating the criminal justice system, fighting for kids, taking the stand and being cross examined, private investigators, death threats, accusations and general suspicion from agencies, etc. not easy. It’s no surprise my test levels were lower due to SHGB, which is impacted by stress.
The other side of this Job’ish story, is… I have more close friends than ever, I’m in better shape, I make way more money, my house is great, wife is great and kids are learning how to do life. Man, it took its toll on me tho. I know still somewhat cryptic… but, the most recent timeline looks like this.
Friday, 23 have a huge deadline and need adoption finalized
On 5/21, I push my attorney to finalize. He does at 11pm
On 5/22, I push courts to have judge sign. It isn’t.
5/23, my wife gets pneumonia and is in bed.
Later that day, adoption finalized
5/24, start packing house to move into new one.
5/28, moved into new house with most of stuff at old home. I have to work.
5/29, boss dumps so much work on me at 4pm. I work until 3am
5/30-6/2, I move out of house and clean it and finish moving into new home. Wife is still very sick
6/3, I get very sick. Still work
6/4, can’t work
6/5, can’t work
6/6-6/7, laying in bed working because boss is demanding
6/8-9, trying to get better
6/10-11, wife is finally getting better, I’m mostly there
6/12, wife finally better, I’m feeling good and can finally sit down on front porch and process fact that this chapter has ended.
Thanks and great to hear from you. Hope you’re doing well! Interestingly, you post after I’ve been doing some soul searching on last four years. It’s been a wild ride. Lotta empty bourbon bottles.
Wednesday
3 miles walk with 40lb vest
20 pull-ups, with knees raised (7,7,6)
18 minutes in ice bath - 42F. A little long. Just closed my eyes and let my brian wander.
This too shall pass.
Remember to put your oxygen mask on first so you are available to help your family.
Ya, it’s over. My poorly written musings last night, realizing it’s over. The whole ‘good news’ we’ve waited years for was overshadowed by sickness and having to move. Now that dust has settled, I’m waking up realizing the things that used to occupy my thoughts no longer exist.
Saturday
Weighted vest (40lbs) for whole Workout
Clean and strict press
5x5x135
Row
5x10x135
100lb med ball carries
3x100 yards
100lb med ball press
40
It’s 90F outside, so jumped in cold plunge for 8 minutes and off to watch kids so my wife can go shopping. Happy Father’s Day!
Weight is 223. Looks like the bout of pneumonia and no appeitie kick started weight loss again. Looks like I’ll be a SHW next month, if I can keep it going.
Monday
Let’s call this the guard retention workout.
20 pillups for warmup
Incline bench
2x10x135
5x155
3x175
3x185
3x205
5x185
DB incline pullover
3x20
20 cal air bike
20 reps quad extension
5 rounds
Essentially, incline bench is framing away. Pullover is inverting when bottom of north/south and the air bike exhausts you before playing butterfly guard, which has been my go to lately.
Cardio is weak. Need to be able to 10 rounds easy. It was also 95F in garage and I was dripping sweat the whole workout. Felt good to sweat it out. In future I’ll use portable swamp cooler.
Tuesday
Pull-ups with leg raises
30
Zercher Squat
5x135
5x135
5x185
5x225
5x225
Fat Grip Lat Pulldown
3x20
Weight vest Med ball carries
40’ x 150lb ball + 40lb vest
5 rounds
Bicep curls
3xamrap
Recorded a few videos. One of squats and other of 4th set of med ball carries.
The med ball carries are tough. I try and work various BJJ grips between rounds. The goal is to keep the ball tight to your body, but in doing so, it becomes harder to breath with the vest on. It’s a good pain tho. A lot like someone having their knee on you.
I really like fat grip cable pull downs. I try to go heavy and finish each rep with an iso hold. Essentially working on collar ties. I rolled with a black belt and all American wrestler a few months back. Despite being in his late 40s, he had the heaviest hands I’ve ever felt. My neck and back was sore for a few days after. Since then, I’ve tried to strengthen my grips and technique to do the same.
The last month off has been good for my hands, wrists and biceps. I’ve had a bicep strains for months before from holding my baby and gi grips. It’s made curls and pronated pull ups impossible.
Zerchers felt heavy. Probably could have pushed for 10 reps, but would have been ugly. Taking a month off took its toll.
Wednesday
First day back on mats. I went to my ‘actual’ academy. I’m a bit of a mat nomad. I go to affiliate schools mostly and once every few months drop in on a class where I pay my monthly. At first, I did this because of schedule and where my kids activities were. Then it just became a fun way to sandbag. I got my first two stripes the same day after 10 months. Then, I took them off immediately and went to another school. My professor caught up to me one day at an affiliate and gave me two feeling really guilty. I took them off again. Then, about 6 weeks ago he gave me two more, again, confused that I was the lowest person at end of class. Today, he told me to compete one more time before I get it. I told him I would, but he wouldn’t see me for a long time after I compete. Hahaha while I respect the art, I think belts are dumb. When I played baseball, you never knew how good someone was until they threw the first pitch. It wasn’t uncommon for pitchers to do light warmups when they took the mound, then blow 92+ by you after a few off speeds. Similarly, I like nogi, because you don’t really know until you’re on your back, heart racing and have to defend yourself. I’ll give in eventually.
That leads me to having to lose about 6lbs by mid July. Which, easy. Except my best friend is coming the week of the 4th. So I’m gonna have to contain myself.
Rolls were ok tonight. Everyone was new, 2 stripes or less. Ha, which is more than I currently have on my belt.
Worked De La Riva and berimbolos. All sparring was mostly me messing around with inversions or letting newer folks work on maintain side/back control.
Same boat! I need to simply STOP gaining weight between now and 13 Jul…but I’m gonna have me some ribs on 4 Jul damnit!
Full concur. I WANT to be treated like a white belt ALL the time. Assume I know nothing, teach me like I’m new, explain EVERYTHING, leave nothing unsaid. I haven’t let my instructor know anything about my prior martial arts background and just let him teach me. It’s a much better way to go.
John McCallum called this “softening up”. You just set yourself up for some gains!
Our competitions are the same day.
As long as I can stay active, get workouts in early, before my friend and family come over each day I should be ok. I feel much better about my ability to control food intake than a few years back. I need to stay away from liquor too. I like to drink socially, specifically old fashioned and can see myself having a 2-3 a night as we hangout by pool. If I stick to Ranch Waters, WHEN I have a drink, I should be able to limit the alcohol effects. Also… no going hog wild on chips and dip.
Back in the day, there was two belts. While and Blue… Then it was like, White, light blue and dark blue… but, people wanted belts so they made a business out of it. I’m an adult, I don’t need belt promotions and definitely not stripe promotions to encourage me.
Even when I wasn’t technically good and was submitted multiple times a round, I always took it as a compliment when people said they had to work really hard for it.
A nice reset on what’s hard is always good, right? Reusing old hard stimulus for near max effort means I still have a bullet in the chamber when it gets hard again. That’s a good thought.
